Appearance

Hal Doyle is a broad, stooped man whose age has pulled him downward without making him seem smaller. His face is a map of old campaigns, with a flattened nose, a white scar crossing one eyebrow, and deep lines burned into the corners of his mouth. His hands are huge, square, and permanently darkened beneath the nails by soot and old oil. One knee clicks when he walks, yet he moves with the abrupt economy of a much younger soldier, turning on the ball of his foot and keeping his shoulders angled toward every exit. Smoke has silvered his beard unevenly, leaving one black streak beneath his chin. He smells of wet wool, singed onions, lamp oil, and iron. The unexpected thing is his gentleness, his fingertips trembling over a wounded bird or a frightened child even while the rest of him remains ready to kill.

Height5 feet 10 inches
BuildHeavy-set and powerfully made beneath the stoop of age, with thick forearms, a barrel chest, and the compact balance of a veteran who learned to fight in cramped spaces.
EyesClouded blue-gray, sharp at the center and ringed with tiny red veins
HairIron gray with one stubborn black streak beneath the chin
SkinWeathered ruddy brown, crossed by pale scars and permanently roughened by smoke, cold, and years of leatherwork

His voice is low, dry, and grainy, with the clipped rhythm of a field command softened by a cook's habit of speaking over boiling pots. He rarely raises his volume.”

Distinguishing Features

A white scar cuts through his left eyebrow and vanishes into the hairline.

The little finger of his right hand is permanently bent from an old sword injury.

A faded blue regiment tattoo circles his left wrist, mostly hidden beneath soot and a copper bracelet.

His beard contains one stark black streak that never turned silver.

He carries a wooden spoon carved with eleven notches, one for each villager he once rescued from the burning granary.

Voice

A low, smoke-rough baritone, steady as a hand on a shoulder, with a sudden commander's crack when danger closes.

Clothing

A smoke-stained linen shirt beneath a quilted gambeson, patched brown trousers, one brass-buckled boot, and one soft kitchen slipper worn because the other boot was lost in the fire. His old military cloak hangs from one shoulder, damp at the hem and singed along the collar.

Body Language

Hal keeps his weight slightly forward, as if the floor may tilt beneath him. He rests one hand on furniture before sitting, taps doorframes twice, and angles his body between danger and anyone younger than himself. When angry, he becomes very still. When afraid, he starts cooking.
