At the table

Voice

A low, dry contralto with crisp consonants and an unhurried rhythm. Under stress, she takes one shallow breath, whistles once through her teeth, and resumes in an even flatter tone.

Low, dry, and measured. She speaks in compact sentences, names sources whenever she can, and whistles a single sharp note before speaking when startled. When angry, her voice grows quieter rather than louder.

Speech patterns

Builds explanations from concrete observations, then pauses to see whether the listener is following.
Uses dry understatement in dangerous situations.
Asks precise questions and remembers the exact answer.
When embarrassed, changes the subject to paper quality or map symbols.

How to play them

Responds well to people who respect practical expertise, share their own knowledge, or show concern for travelers. She tests strangers with small, answerable questions before entrusting them with sensitive records. If confronted about withholding information, she is more persuaded by a clear plan to protect people than by appeals to authority.

Goal

Authenticate the old road markers and get trustworthy copies of their route records to the families who still depend on that passage.

Motivation

Make knowledge useful to ordinary travelers, and repair the harm caused when she once trusted a polished record over lived evidence.

Secret · GM only

Appearance

Rikktib is a small gnome with the stillness of a person listening for a distant clock. Her steps are quick and precise, but when she stops, she becomes so motionless that people sometimes begin speaking more softly around her. Her hands are broad at the knuckles and permanently ink-dark in the creases, with smooth, polished pads on the fingertips from years of turning brittle pages. She has a low, dry voice and breathes in small, even measures; when alarmed, she lets out one sharp whistle through her teeth before she speaks. The unexpected impression is that this meticulous scholar looks like she ought to be fragile, yet she lifts heavy expedition cases without asking for help.

Clothing

A slate-blue traveling coat with deep document pockets, a rust-red scarf, a patched leather apron, and soft boots designed for quiet walking. She carries a weatherproof hood but almost never wears it, preferring to shield her papers instead.

Body language

Keeps her shoulders square and her hands folded when negotiating. While thinking, she taps one ink-dark fingertip against her thumb in a steady rhythm. When rattled, her breath catches, she whistles once through her teeth, and then her hands become exceptionally still.

Distinguishing features

Her breath is quiet and measured, except for a single sharp whistle when she is startled or angry.
Broad-knuckled hands with ink settled permanently into their creases and polished fingertips from handling old documents.
A tiny brass compass hangs upside down from her scarf; she insists it is easier to read that way.
She can lift a loaded expedition case with an ease that contradicts her bookish, careful manner.

Personality

13 traits and drives

Rikktib is incisive, reserved, and unexpectedly generous with strangers who need practical help. She will lend a book to a traveler she met minutes ago but will not let her closest friends borrow her best compass. In a scholarly debate she is patient and exacting; when someone abuses authority, her patience becomes a hard, clipped silence. She dislikes being praised for courage because she thinks courage is often just poor preparation.

Alignment
Pragmatic and compassionate, with a stubborn streak of civic disobedience

Quirks

Turns books and maps upside down before reading them, claiming orientation reveals different errors.
Counts door hinges under her breath when waiting for someone to finish a speech.
Labels every cup she uses with a tiny paper flag, then forgets to remove the flags.
Whistles one clear note through her teeth whenever genuinely surprised.
Holds her breath while copying important text, then exhales only after the final mark.

Habits

Checks the nearest exit and the nearest source of paper whenever she enters a room.
Offers useful facts freely, but grows evasive when asked who supplied them.
When someone is frightened, gives them a small practical task rather than reassurance.
After danger passes, immediately counts companions and equipment, then pretends she was only checking the inventory.

Traits · 4

Shares useful knowledge freely but guards personal trust.
Values evidence over status, yet sometimes mistakes caution for wisdom.
Gentle with frightened beginners and merciless toward deliberate fraud.
Makes plans for everyone else and neglects her own rest.

Flaws · 3

Treats information as a responsibility she must personally carry, even when sharing it would be wiser.
Can sound cold when she is frightened, because she retreats into exact facts.
Keeps dangerous records from allies until she has a plan, depriving them of the chance to help.

Fears · 3

That another useful truth will arrive too late to help the people who need it.
Becoming so protective of the archive that she forgets the people it was meant to serve.
Being forced to choose between the Wayfarers’ safety and the traveling families she has promised to help.

Wants and needs · 3

Wants the seasonal route protected before the land hearing.
Needs the Wayfarers to trust her enough to face the ledger’s implications together.
Needs rest and help carrying responsibilities she insists are hers alone.

Combat

HP 48 · 25 feet per round in the custom d20 framework

Avoids being surrounded. She opens with Copper-Rain Diagram when several foes threaten the group, uses Proof of Stillness to buy an ally time, and attacks from behind cover with Thrown Theorem. She retreats or bargains if a fight endangers the Wayfarers’ records or a bystander. These are custom, system-neutral combat effects; use the listed tests and damage if running the supplied d20 framework.

Custom Generic Fantasy rules. When an action is uncertain, roll a d20 and add the relevant rating from stats; meet or exceed a difficulty set by the GM. Rikktib's prepared spells are written as effects, not assigned spell levels or schools.
Spellwright. Once per scene, Rikktib can reshape a prepared spell's appearance or path without changing its intended effect.
Wayfarer’s Index. Given a minute with a map, inscription, or travel account, she can identify a likely route, inconsistency, or missing piece of information.

Actions

Thrown Theorem. Ranged spell attack: d20 + Arcana against the target’s defense. On a hit, deal force damage to one target within 60 feet. Rikktib calls this spell a thrown theorem.
Copper-Rain Diagram. A 15-foot burst within 60 feet. Creatures in the area test Agility against difficulty 15; on a failure, take lightning damage and cannot take reactions until their next turn. On a success, take half damage.
Proof of Stillness. One creature Rikktib can see within 30 feet tests Resolve against difficulty 15. On a failure, it is restrained by bright, taut lines of magical notation until the end of its next turn. It can use its action to repeat the test and end the effect on a success.
Reading Light. Rikktib traces a brief sigil on a touched object or surface. For one minute, it glows, hums, and reveals fresh tracks, disturbed dust, or concealed writing within 10 feet. It does not reveal invisible creatures or magically hidden text.

Reactions

Margin of Error. When a creature within 30 feet hits an ally, Rikktib gives the ally a brief ward. Reduce the damage by , then Rikktib may move up to 10 feet without provoking an attack from that creature. Once per scene.

  • Wayfarer’s route archive (document case)A weatherproof case holding copied routes, disputed land records, and annotated travel accounts.
  • Inverted compass (tool)A brass compass whose needle points reliably but whose face is mounted upside down by choice.
  • Mnemonic staff (weapon and focus)A slim ashwood staff etched with short mnemonic marks; useful for walking, pointing, and keeping distance.
  • Field scholar’s kit (supplies)Waxed paper, charcoal sticks, sealing wax, a folding lens, and spare ink.

Possessions

The original surveyor’s field ledger, hidden inside the false bottom of her route case.
Several annotated atlases with margins crowded by corrections and traveler testimony.
A smooth river pebble given by Sella after their first expedition, kept in her coat pocket.
A sealed letter from one of the traveling families, asking her to speak at the land hearing.

Background

Rikktib grew up in the gnome quarter of Oruun, where her mother repaired navigational instruments and her father copied legal records. She learned to read by comparing her father's official maps with the muddy footprints that came home on her mother's boots. As a young scholar, she catalogued a series of old road markers for a wealthy surveyor. She discovered that the surveyor was falsifying borders to dispossess several traveling families, but her published correction arrived too late to prevent their eviction. That failure changed her: she stopped treating knowledge as something safely stored and joined the Wanderer’s Wayfarers, carrying useful records to the people they affected. She now maintains their route archive while traveling with its members, especially her old friend Sella Varn, a patient caravan medic who thinks Rikktib takes needless risks, and Hobb, a junior mapmaker who admires her but has begun questioning her secrecy. Rikktib is currently trying to prove that a set of supposedly abandoned road markers still marks a living seasonal route. A local magistrate wants the records destroyed before the next land hearing, while the Wayfarers’ quartermaster wants her to stop spending their dwindling funds on copies for strangers.

Role in the story

A capable ally whose expertise can reveal hidden routes and contested history. Her private evidence can draw the party into a land dispute, while her divided loyalties create a choice between protecting one compromised Wayfarer and exposing a powerful official.
