Mara Vell
Mara Vell
At the table
“if the wind holds”
Voice
A dry, forward-projecting voice with a little rasp from years of shouting over wind and engines. She speaks as if every sentence has to reach someone across a deck. When rattled, she takes two quick, caught breaths before continuing, and her words briefly scrape at the edges.
Mara speaks in short, workmanlike phrases, with the clipped rhythm of someone accustomed to calling directions over wind and machinery. She favors concrete words and gives measurements by habit. When she is frightened, her breath briefly catches twice and a faint rasp enters her consonants; she recovers by taking one deliberate breath through her nose.
Speech patterns
How to play them
Mara shares the most urgent warning first, then gives details if the party listens. She responds well to concrete questions and people who check on the crew, but grows impatient with anyone treating the island as a puzzle that cannot hurt them. She will guide the party if they agree to keep a clear route back to the airship.
Goal
Warn the party about the isle's shifting platforms, guide them through the danger, and return to Kestrel's Rest alive.
Motivation
To keep people alive by making the danger understandable, and to prove that trusting observation over an official chart was not a mistake.
Appearance
Mara has a weather-polished look, as if wind has been sanding her into a sharper shape for years. Her dark hair is cropped short at the temples and tied into a small, practical tail; salt-crusted wisps escape around her ears. A faint dusting of pale freckles crosses her nose, and her eyes rarely settle on a face for long: they check exits, overhead rigging, windows, and the angle of anything hanging loose. She walks with her weight slightly forward, ready to brace against a deck lurch. Unexpectedly, she carries a tiny folded paper menagerie in a waterproof case and makes delicate birds from old charts when the watch is quiet.
Clothing
A patched, high-collared oilskin coat over a wool shirt, close-fitting trousers, soft-soled deck boots, and a harness belt threaded with chalk, twine, and a folding brass compass. Her cuffs are salt-stiff and her coat smells faintly of lamp oil.
Body language
She braces her feet as if the floor may tilt, touches doorframes and railings to feel their vibration, and looks above people's shoulders to track sails, beams, and hanging objects. When rattled, her breath catches twice in quick succession; she presses her tongue to the back of her teeth until it steadies.

Combat
AC 13 · HP 9 · 30 ft.Mara avoids a fair fight. She keeps near cover and a route back to the ship, uses her knife only to make space, and calls out unstable footing before it gives way. If the party is threatened, she uses her signal weight to disrupt a pursuer and retreats toward safer ground.

Equipment
- Deck knife (weapon)A narrow, well-kept blade used as much for cutting line as for defense.
- Folding compass (navigation tool)Brass instrument with a swinging needle and a cracked glass face; useful for bearings but unreliable near the isle.
- Weather-worn chart folio (navigation tool)Marked with shifting platform positions and storm notes, with several deliberately blank sections.
- Signal weight (keepsake)A brass weight on a cord, once used to signal through fog; it belonged to Jengo.

Background
Mara grew up among ferry pilots on the floodplain below a chain of wind-carved cliffs. Her mother taught her to read cloud bellies; her father taught her that a map is a promise someone made before the world changed. At twenty, Mara took a berth on the airship Kestrel's Rest and learned to navigate by pressure shifts, rigging-song, and the taste of rain in the air. During a storm crossing near the Isle of Whispers, she watched the island's platforms slide out of their old positions while the crew's charts insisted they were fixed. She brought the ship through by trusting the movement she could see, not the map she had been given. The experience cost her a crewmate, Jengo, who stayed behind to cut a snagged line and vanished in the cloud. Mara still carries his brass signal weight. Now she is the only navigator aboard who has seen the isle from the storm's edge, but the captain wants a fast landing and the quartermaster wants proof before risking the ship. Mara is trying to warn the party without turning her fear into an order, and she means to get back to the airship alive.
Role in the story
A wary guide and witness to the isle's changing platforms. Mara gives the party a credible warning about the terrain, helps them find a route back, and has a personal stake in surviving the expedition.
