Raevei
Raevei
At the table
Voice
Low and airy for her size, warm rather than musical. When she is angry, her words become unusually crisp and practical; when embarrassed, she speaks to the nearest plant instead of the person.
Gentle and rounded, with careful enunciation and an occasional lilting cadence. She speaks softly unless danger demands otherwise, and tends to describe places by what grows or smells there.
Speech patterns
How to play them
Meet her at eye level if possible, accept the practical help she offers, and ask about the Wayfarers before pressing her about home. She responds well to patience and direct, unshowy kindness. Treating her as a mascot or assuming she will take risks for free makes her guarded and sharply businesslike.
Goal
Find who introduced the meadow blight, secure proof that can be trusted, and decide whether to bring that truth home herself.
Motivation
To protect the Wayfarers without becoming their keeper, and to learn whether the home she fled can still be repaired.
Appearance
Raevei is small enough to perch on a pack frame, but she never seems delicate. Her translucent wings resemble overlapping meadow petals, veined in copper and green; they beat with a soft papery shiver. She smells unmistakably of crushed clover, rain-wet soil, and a faint, sweet ferment, and has no idea the scent lingers after she leaves. In every room, her eyes go first to the windows, exits, and any neglected plant, never to the person with the grandest title. She moves in abrupt, buoyant starts, then becomes unnervingly still when listening. The unexpected detail is her precise, almost severe handwriting, tucked into notebooks with frayed flower-pressed covers.
Clothing
A moss-green traveling coat altered with hidden slits for her wings, a soft cream scarf, fitted trousers, and a belt of tiny waxed-paper packets. Her cuffs are carefully mended with thread in three different shades of green.
Body language
She hovers just above the ground when excited and lands with both feet together when uneasy. Her wings fold tightly when she is being evasive. While others speak, she watches their hands and the nearest doorway, occasionally turning a leaf or petal between her fingers.

Background
Raevei grew up among the seed-keepers of a meadow settlement whose paths shifted with the seasons. Her mother, Omi, taught her to bargain carefully; her older brother, Tovan, taught her to laugh at rules he could not break. Raevei's magic first erupted when a blight swept the meadow. In panic, she tried to save a nursery of rare flowers, and her uncontrolled power scattered their seeds across the valley. The flowers survived, but the seed-keepers lost their protected monopoly over them. Raevei left rather than face the families who blamed her, and joined the Wanderer's Wayfarers, first as a guide and then as their spellcaster. She sends most of her earnings home, yet avoids answering her brother's increasingly urgent letters. Now she suspects the blight that drove her away was deliberately introduced, and that someone among the seed-keepers is still profiting from the cure.
Role in the story
