Csongor
Csongor
At the table
“I may be mistaken”
Voice
A dry, work-roughened voice with a little rasp at the back, shaped by years of calling over the clatter of a forge. He gives ordinary statements a craftsman's rhythm, as though each phrase is being checked for a weak joint. When he is alarmed, his words speed up and sharpen rather than dropping in volume.
His speech carries the clipped practicality of a smith used to talking over ringing iron. He favors specific questions, names measurements when other people use impressions, and often begins a difficult thought with a brief throat-clearing cough. His words grow faster and more tangled when he is trying to protect Mary without admitting that is what he is doing.
Speech patterns
How to play them
Begin with ordinary hospitality and questions about work or travel. If Ossian is present, watch how he responds to small surprises rather than making a direct accusation. Csongor can be persuaded by patient, concrete explanations, but Mary can make him abandon an interrogation if she asks him plainly to stop.
Goal
Determine whether Ossian is human before deciding whether to confront him, while preserving Mary's trust.
Motivation
To keep Mary safe without driving her away, and to know what Ossian is before fear or affection makes the decision for him.
Appearance
Csongor has a broad, weather-browned face and a thick, carefully trimmed mustache that curls unevenly at one corner. His hair is iron-gray, coarse as a scrub brush, and usually pressed flat beneath his cap. He stands with his weight settled on the balls of his feet, as if testing whether the ground will hold; when he walks, he advances in short, deliberate steps and pauses at thresholds to look at the lintel. His coat smells faintly of beeswax, wet wool, and the smoke from his forge. The unexpectedly gentle thing about him is the way he handles moths: he cups them without crushing their wings and carries them outdoors.
Clothing
A smoke-brown wool coat with a high collar, a patched leather apron, a plain linen shirt, sturdy trousers, and boots blackened by forge soot. A small bone button at his cuff is carved into a moth, though he claims it is merely a scrap from an old coat.
Body language
He plants his feet as though bracing against a current and angles his shoulders toward the nearest exit. When Mary speaks, he turns his whole body toward her; when Ossian speaks, only his eyes move at first. He rubs his thumb over the polished knob of his walking stick when trying not to interrupt.

Personality
13 traits and drivesCsongor is observant and cautious, yet not naturally cruel; he will offer a stranger hot tea while quietly memorizing their boots. He is proud of his judgment but privately worries that love has made him foolish. Around Mary he tries to sound practical and becomes overbearing; alone with Ossian he is courteous to the point of strain. When relaxed, he is unexpectedly patient with small creatures and children. When frightened, he turns every conversation into an examination.

Background
Csongor spent most of his life as a village farrier, learning to judge a horse's health from the sound of its shoes on stone and a stranger's truthfulness from what they notice first. Years ago, during a flood, he watched Mary cling to a roof beam while he waded through the current to reach her. He saved her, but she came away with a lifelong fear of rushing water, and he never forgave himself for having brought her too close to the river that day. Since then he has tried to protect her by anticipating danger, a habit she finds smothering. Mary brought Ossian home as a companion and perhaps more; Csongor has noticed that Ossian's stories about childhood shift in small, precise ways, and that dogs sometimes stop barking when he passes. He is collecting reasons before he confronts him, fearing both that Ossian is not human and that his suspicion could cost Mary the person she trusts. Meanwhile, the village reeve wants him to repair a broken mill gear before the next harvest, and Csongor keeps putting the work off to watch Ossian.
Role in the story
Mary's father and a connection of Ossian. He is an ordinary person whose careful suspicions can create a tense confrontation, offer a trail of clues, or become a source of help if the party earns his trust.
