Moritz
Unclassed laborer
Moritz
Species
Molefolk
Appearance
Moritz is a broad-shouldered molefolk with velvety brown fur that has gone silver around the muzzle and wrists. His hands are oversized, blunt-clawed, and permanently packed with pale clay beneath the nails. He stands with his weight sunk forward into the balls of his feet, as though listening through the floor, and when he waits he gently rocks from heel to toe without seeming aware of it. He takes up more space than his modest height suggests, leaning close to smell tools, walls, and strangers. His fur looks soft enough to pet, but his work clothes rasp like old rope against it. The unexpected contradiction is his immaculate mouth: he keeps his small cream-colored teeth polished with mint root, a fastidious habit learned from a grandmother who believed a clean smile could save a bad negotiation.
“Low, dry, and deliberate, with a faint rasp like grit moving through a wooden box. Moritz pauses before important words and tends to lower his voice when discussing danger, forcing others to lean closer.”

Distinguishing Features
A pale crescent of fur beneath his chin, like a dust mask that nature painted for him.
His left sleeve is always rolled higher than the right because he judges soil texture with the bare skin of his forearm.
He carries a tiny brass bell that he never rings, using its weight to test whether a surface is vibrating.
He smiles before disagreeing, making his most stubborn refusals look briefly friendly.
He smells faintly of mint root, wet stone, and lamp oil.
Voice
“A low, careful baritone with a dry rasp, softened by an unexpected warmth whenever he speaks to children or injured animals.”
Clothing
A patched indigo work coat with leather elbow guards, a clay-stiffened linen shirt, heavy brown trousers, and soft-soled boots. He wears a red thread bracelet around one wrist and keeps a brass measuring cord wound across his chest like a bandolier.
Body Language
Moritz leans slightly forward, feet planted wide, and rests two fingers against nearby walls when listening. In conversation he circles people rather than standing directly before them. When lying, he becomes unusually still, with his claws folded neatly over his stomach.
