Voice

A dry, slightly rasped speaking voice with a practical rhythm, shaped by years of calling measurements across noisy work sites and explaining difficult magic to tired travelers.

His voice carries the dry rasp of someone accustomed to talking over wind and workshop noise. He clips the ends of sentences when focused, but lets pauses stretch when he is weighing a person rather than a problem. His speech is plain and exact, with bridgewright's terms slipping into explanations of magic. The name Nori is spoken plainly, without theatrical emphasis.

Speech patterns

Explains a practical consequence before revealing the theory behind it.
Asks people what they saw, then what they expected to see.
Uses plain, workaday metaphors drawn from bridges, tools, and weather.
When caught in a lie, stops mid-sentence and starts over with an exact correction.

How to play them

He offers useful information in return for specific observations, introductions, or help with a concrete problem. He respects direct questions but may answer only the part he considers safe. Earn his trust by keeping a promise when it becomes inconvenient; challenge him with evidence rather than bravado.

Goal

Find Xullmuzoth, learn how the balor escaped the first time, and destroy it without repeating the choices that doomed his former company.

Motivation

Guilt has become a compass, though he knows a compass can point steadily in the wrong direction.

Appearance

The Magi has the lean, weathered look of a traveler who has slept in more observatories than beds. He walks with a measured forward tilt, favoring neither leg, and can become so still that dust gathers on his robe before he notices. His hands are broad and ink-stained, the fingertips roughened by years of chalk, hot glass, and spellwork. The gold staff he carries is polished where his grip rests and dulled everywhere else. Unexpectedly, he keeps a tiny paper menagerie folded into his robe, and occasionally sets one on a windowsill to watch the room.

Clothing

A white traveling robe edged in gold thread, repaired at the elbows with patches of nearly matching cloth. Its broad sleeves hide chalk, folded notes, and small spell components. Under it he wears a plain linen shirt, sturdy trousers, and mud-dark boots.

Body language

He angles his body toward exits without seeming to guard them. When listening, he lowers his chin and watches the speaker’s hands. He plants the staff before sitting and leaves it within reach even among friends. Strong emotion makes him move more, not less: he paces short, exact routes and turns at the same points.

His unnaturally deliberate stillness, followed by sudden, economical movement.
A golden staff polished smooth only at the places his hands hold it.

Personality

12 traits and drives

Nori can be patient with a frightened stranger and sharply impatient with a careless scholar. He enjoys ordinary company but distrusts anyone who praises his wisdom. In safety, he is dryly funny and curious; under pressure, he becomes procedural and controlling. When a person is in immediate danger, his careful reserve gives way to startlingly direct action.

Alignment
Neutral good

Quirks

Folds a paper animal whenever someone gives him bad news, then leaves it behind.
Taps the end of his staff twice against a threshold before crossing.
Names constellations after tools and refuses to explain which names are jokes.
Turns cups so their handles point toward the nearest exit.
Keeps a running tally of bridges crossed, but not roads.

Habits

Counts doorways and windows when entering a room, then pretends he was admiring the architecture.
Leaves folded paper animals in places where he expects someone frightened to wait.
When absorbed in a problem, traces diagrams on his sleeve with one blunt fingernail.
After a battle, checks the living before recovering his own dropped belongings.

Combat

AC 17 · HP 116 · 30 ft.

He tries to learn the battlefield before committing powerful magic, using counterspell, shield, and positioning to blunt enemy advantages. Against groups he favors control and area spells; against a dangerous single foe he uses forceful magic and protective wards. He prioritizes evacuating bystanders over landing a perfect spell. When confronting Xullmuzoth, he is liable to overextend himself.

Background

He was born Nori Tada to a family of bridgewrights, and spent his youth measuring river floods and repairing cracked stone. A survey of a ruined watchtower led him to a sealed chamber full of star charts that recorded events years before they happened. He apprenticed himself to a reclusive wizard, then outgrew the master’s library and became a wandering mage. Years ago, he helped a company of soldiers drive the balor Xullmuzoth from a mortal settlement, but the demon escaped after Nori trusted a prophecy that proved incomplete. His closest surviving companion, the scout Omi, believes Nori chose the wrong retreat and has not forgiven him. Nori now follows fragments of the balor’s trail while trying to keep the prophecy from becoming a self-fulfilling disaster. He writes regularly to his younger sister, Sana, though he has never told her how close Xullmuzoth came to their home.

Role in the story

A powerful but fallible ally, source of arcane insight, and possible warning about how prophecy can become an instrument of choice. His pursuit of Xullmuzoth can draw the party into the demon’s schemes.

“A survey of a ruined watchtower led him to a sealed chamber full of star charts that recorded events years before they happened.”
