Yovaro
Yovaro
At the table
Voice
A dry rasp rides on steady breath, shaped by a lifetime of shouting route calls across marsh water. He speaks with clipped emphasis and lets a sentence trail only when he is watching the ground. When rattled, his breath catches in two nasal clicks, then he pushes through with a faster, more forceful cadence.
His voice has a dry, breath-driven rasp from years of calling directions over wind and water. He places strong weight on the first word of an instruction, then clips the rest into practical phrases. His speech grows faster, not softer, when he is angry, and his nose clicks audibly when he is trying to keep fear out of his voice.

How to play them
Yovaro tests strangers by asking where they intend to travel and whether they know how to read a flooded trail. He becomes helpful when they answer honestly, even if they know little. He respects direct admissions of fear and distrusts bravado. If players endanger locals, he confronts them plainly before resorting to force.
Goal
Stop the drainage crew from cutting through the nesting ground and identify who has been shifting the boundary stones.
Motivation
He wants to make the marsh safe without turning its people into prisoners of their own caution.
Appearance
Yovaro is a broad-shouldered orc with dark olive skin, a blunt jaw, and a steady, forward-leaning way of walking, as if the ground might give way unless he tests it first. His skin has a pebbled, weather-polished texture across the forearms, and pale green lines of marsh chalk often dust his knuckles. A string of tiny carved wooden vowels is tied into his beard, each mark recording a boundary he has sworn to keep. The surprising detail is that he keeps a thumb-sized clay whistle tucked behind one tusk and uses it to imitate frogs for children. When uneasy, his breath catches in short, dry clicks through his nose, while one hand checks the cord around his wrist without his noticing.
Clothing
A sleeveless boiled-leather coat over a moss-brown wool shirt, layered with reed-fiber gaiters and a waxed shoulder cape. His belt holds chalk, twine, a folding measuring rod, and a pouch of dried apples. He wears no bright insignia.
Body language
He stands with his weight slightly forward and plants his feet as if checking the ground beneath them. His fingers repeatedly feel for the cord on his wrist. When he is rattled, his nostrils flare and his breathing breaks into two quick clicks before he forces it steady.

Background
Yovaro grew up tending the long boundary stones that mark safe paths through the Fen of Seven Reeds. His people call the carved strokes on those stones longmarks, and a macronwarden is the keeper who maintains them, remembers their old meanings, and guides travelers through disputed ground. As a boy, Yovaro was impatient with the work and wanted to be a hunter. During a spring flood, he ignored his aunt's warning that a certain marker had shifted. A merchant's cart followed the false path and sank; Yovaro pulled two children from the water but could not save their father. He changed after that, learning every channel and treating small signs as matters of life and death. His aunt, Pella, trained him in the warden's craft and still challenges his judgments. His friend Davi repairs the ferry ropes, while a rival, Ruut, argues that the marsh paths should be closed to outsiders. Yovaro currently tries to keep a new drainage crew from cutting through a nesting ground while also discovering who has been moving the boundary stones at night.
