At the table
Voice
A dry, road-worn voice with a slight rasp, shaped by camp smoke and calling over carts. Its rhythm is clipped but not hurried, and his warnings carry cleanly without shouting.
His voice has a dry rasp from cold roads, camp smoke, and years of calling warnings over wagon noise. He speaks with a worn-in regional cadence, clipping unneeded words and putting hard emphasis on names, prices, and directions. He does not raise his voice to sound commanding; he projects clearly when the situation requires it.
Speech patterns
How to play them
Responds well to directness, fair terms, and people who notice practical details. He dislikes grand claims and tests promises by watching whether someone follows through on small agreements. He will accept a convincing explanation, but does not mistake it for repaired trust. Players who treat him as a professional partner can earn his respect without needing to flatter him.
Goal
Earn enough steady work to stop taking desperate jobs, settle his sister's outstanding household debts, and decide whether Constantine's account of the recent death deserves his full trust.
Motivation
Merrik wants work that pays honestly, companions who mean what they agree to, and enough control over danger that nobody is abandoned through carelessness.
Appearance
A seasoned, plainly handsome man whose steadiness is more noticeable than any attempt at command. His travel clothes sit a little wrong at the shoulders, altered for movement rather than fit, and his chain shirt shows through at the collar when he turns. His dark hair is clipped close at the sides and left untidy on top. He walks with a measured, slightly forward-set balance, as if always accounting for slippery ground. The unexpected detail is his careful, almost fastidious way of eating: he cuts bread into small, even pieces and gathers every crumb, a habit that looks oddly domestic in a man who sleeps beside roads.
Clothing
A patched brown wool coat over a riveted chain shirt, a faded linen shirt, dark trousers reinforced at the knees, and serviceable riding boots. His belt is plain and adjusted for quick access to sword and knife. His shield is scuffed and unpainted; a single strap has been replaced with a strip of harness leather.
Body language
Keeps his shoulders loose and his weight balanced over his feet. His eyes make quiet rounds of doors, hands, and high ground. He rarely points; he indicates directions with a small tilt of his chin. When uncertain, he presses his tongue against one back tooth and waits a beat before answering.

Personality
13 traits and drivesDependable and alert, but not warm on command. He is patient with frightened people and impatient with people who confuse boldness for competence. In a tavern he can be dryly funny; under pressure he becomes concise and hard to read. He is practical without being cruel, and accepts uncertainty while resenting anyone who uses it as cover for evasion.
- Alignment
- Neutral Good, though his working habits can seem sternly pragmatic.

Combat
AC 16 · HP 28 · 30 ft.Merrik places himself between immediate danger and whoever cannot manage it, but does not make a show of guarding anyone. He uses the shield to deny easy approaches, attacks twice when he has a stable opening, and spends maneuvers to stop a dangerous enemy or make a sure hit count. He disengages from a losing position rather than fighting to impress. If Constantine is threatened, Merrik prioritizes buying him time.

Background
Merrik Doss learned to judge a road by its ditches and a stranger by what they did with their hands. He grew up around cart traffic and hired guards, then spent years escorting merchants through stretches where a broken axle could be more dangerous than bandits. During one winter crossing, he obeyed a caravan master's order to keep moving despite a missing teamster. Merrik later found the man frozen in a drainage culvert, alive but too far gone to save. Since then, he checks culverts, abandoned wagons, and the rear of every column, even when it costs time. He and Constantine Valacor became partners because each could do what the other could not: Merrik handles immediate danger, while Constantine brings magic and plans beyond a sword's reach. They split ordinary costs and discuss unusual finds before dividing them. Their trust faltered after a recent death and Constantine's account of it. Merrik does not claim the explanation settled the matter, only that it is enough to keep traveling for now.
Role in the story
A recurring frontline companion and a grounded counterweight to Constantine Valacor's magic and risk-taking. Merrik contributes competence, tactical judgment, and a continuing point of tension around the recent death without dictating what the players must believe.
“During one winter crossing, he obeyed a caravan master's order to keep moving despite a missing teamster.”
- Faction
- No formal faction. He takes escort work through the uneasy partnership of Kestrel Ford's cart factors and the local drovers, a business known as the Cartwrights and the Drovers after two rival groups were forced to share a yard.
