Level 5·Male·Medium
Neutral Good

Species

Tortle

Appearance

Marren is a broad, elderly tortle with a shell shaped like a weathered ship's hull, its ridges polished smooth where decades of rope, salt, and deck boards rubbed against it. He moves slowly until danger appears, then unfolds with startling economy, every motion clipped and exact. He smells faintly of lamp oil, peppered tobacco, and clean seawater. His lower jaw is usually set in a patient frown, but his eyes are bright and amused. The contradictory impression is that of a tired old dockworker who somehow carries himself like the most dangerous man on the pier. Before he speaks, he draws a long breath through his nose and clicks his tongue once against his beak-like mouth.

Height5 feet 2 inches
BuildHeavyset and powerful, with thick shoulders, stout legs, and the compact strength of someone accustomed to hauling wet rope.
EyesDeep amber with fine dark rings around the pupils
HairSparse white bristles along his jaw and crown, usually slicked flat with whale oil
SkinDark olive-green skin mottled with pale salt-colored speckles around the wrists and neck

Low, dry, and measured, with a rasp like rope sliding through a wet pulley. He leaves a deliberate pause before names and occasionally ends a sentence with a soft click of his tongue.”

Distinguishing Features

A shell ridge near his left shoulder bears dozens of tiny brass tally marks, one for each crew member he failed to bring home.

His pistol grip is wrapped in blue sailcloth from the Brine Hen.

He walks with a subtle side-to-side roll even on perfectly level ground.

He whistles the same three-note fragment whenever he smells rain.

His first breath before speaking is deep enough that nearby people often notice it.

Voice

A low harbor rasp with a tired warmth beneath it, as if every sentence has crossed rough water before reaching shore.

Clothing

A faded navy pea coat cut open around his shell, patched canvas trousers, a red wool scarf gone brown at the edges, tarred deck boots, and a leather bandolier of carefully wrapped pistol cartridges.

Body Language

He plants his feet wide for balance, turns his whole shell toward whoever is speaking, and rests one hand near his pistol without appearing threatening. When embarrassed, he tucks his chin and rubs the oldest ridge of his shell with one thumb.
