Dain Mercer
Dain Mercer
At the table
Voice
A brisk, clean London voice with a slight rasp at the edges, like breath drawn through cold air. Its polish comes from years of studying people and serving guests; its sharp little stops betray the bird beneath the manners.
His speech carries a practiced, posh London accent, polished through years of listening to locals and copying their turns of phrase. The sound is clear and quick, with crisp consonants and a dry, service-trained finish. When excited, his words come out in short bursts; when discussing work, he becomes precise and formal. He does not lower his voice when angry. He goes blunt.
Speech patterns
How to play them
Treat him as a useful but unreliable source of information. Give him a clear task, a deadline, and a reason not to turn it into a prank. He responds well to competence and freedom of movement; threats make him evasive. Ask the same practical question in more than one way and check important claims with another source.
Goal
Earn enough trust at the lodge to regain freedom of movement, without surrendering the private life and schemes he has kept apart from his duties.
Motivation
He wants to be treated as an intelligent adult rather than a troublesome bird, but fears that acting responsibly will cost him the freedom that made his life his own.
Appearance
A handsome, carefully composed young Englishman whose manners have the neatness of someone who learned people by watching them. His blond hair is combed into place, though a stubborn feather-fine lock keeps lifting at the crown. Green eyes hold on a speaker a fraction too long, weighing exits and pockets. His jaw is narrow and his incisors show sharply when he eats; he tears bread into small bites with a bird's quick, precise motions. He smells faintly of cold feathers, wool, and kitchen butter, a scent he pretends not to notice. He moves with measured human courtesy until startled, when his head snaps round before the rest of him follows.
Clothing
A dark navy wool overcoat over a cream roll-neck, tailored charcoal trousers, polished but weather-scuffed brogues, and a restrained silk pocket square. All are modern upper-class British menswear, adapted to lodge work and alpine weather.
Body language
Keeps his shoulders squared and his hands still while speaking, but his gaze continually tracks movement overhead. When cornered, he tilts his head as if listening for a distant call. He straightens his pocket square after a lie and smooths his cuffs when caught out.

Personality
15 traits and drivesQuick-minded and observant, Dain is charming when he chooses to be and insufferably pleased when a trick succeeds. He wants to be regarded as dependable, yet lies on reflex and bristles when anyone tries to manage him. At work he can be exacting about a guest's needs; in private he is nosy, playful, and careless with other people's patience. He is loyal to a very small circle, but his loyalty does not make him gentle.

HP 0 · Use the movement rules of Changeling: The Dreaming for the chosen edition; raven flight is a form change, not a separate fixed speed rating.Avoids a stand-up fight. He tries to spot trouble early, warn staff, misdirect pursuers, and escape through a window or into raven form. If trapped, he uses speed and distraction to break contact. He will not risk his wings or feathers for a stranger's pride.

Background
Dain was born a raven in the Tower of London and learned the city from rooflines, refuse bins, and the habits of its people. He watched long before he understood what he was watching. When his fae nature emerged, he kept two lives: a raven's mischief and a human identity built from close study of Londoners. For years he passed among mortals without being caught, carrying messages, spying on locals, and meddling with other supernatural beings for his own amusement. That ended when Louise Sarne de Scathach, a hired hand with little patience for his games, caught him mid-flight. His stunts had begun to distort mortal senses and make reality unreliable around him. Louise delivered him to an alpine freehold lodge that operates as a bathhouse and resort, with instructions that he be taught restraint. He now serves as messenger and concierge. He is clever enough to understand the work, and resentful enough to keep looking for ways around it. He once loved Clare, a mortal woman who knew him as a man. She left when his lies became impossible to distinguish from the truth. Dain still keeps an unsent letter for her and has not taken another lover. He is on easy terms with the cooks, who tolerate his discreet food-begging, and has begun to learn the lodge's staff routines well enough to notice when a guest or employee is missing.
Role in the story
A locally useful guide, courier, and source of overheard information whose poor impulse control can turn a quiet investigation into a supernatural complication.
“He watched long before he understood what he was watching.”
- Faction
- The lodge freehold in the Italian Alps, where he serves under Louise's arrangement. His exact standing within the freehold is deliberately modest.
