At the table

Voice

His voice is clear and carefully placed, shaped by the measured service language of a concierge and the practiced listening of a former streetwise bird. Before he speaks, he often takes a brief nasal intake; his jaw works once before a difficult answer. His laughter exposes his pointed canines and has a dry, clipped edge.

He chooses polished English diction, with a posh London accent learned by listening closely to the people around the Tower. His sentences are neatly ordered until he improvises a lie, when clauses stack up and details arrive too quickly. He begins many replies with a short intake through his nose, as if testing the air before speaking.

Speech patterns

Uses polished, formal English for guests and staff, with careful phrasing that sounds more candid than it is.
Answers a question with a useful fact, then tries to steer away from the question he was actually asked.
When excited, slips into brisk descriptions of routes, windows and who was seen where.
Dislikes being mistaken for an ordinary bird or a harmless fool.

How to play them

Offer a useful service first: a message delivered, a room found, or a guest quietly redirected. He responds well to people who speak plainly and badly to those who treat him as stupid. Ask direct questions and compare answers; he is likelier to reveal something by trying to manage the conversation than by confessing. Do not threaten his freedom unless prepared for him to flee or retaliate indirectly.

Goal

Earn enough trust and discretion at Sesto dei Cardi to regain freedom of movement, without surrendering his private network of raven routes and observations.

Motivation

To prove he is more than a troublesome bird, while keeping the independence that makes him feel like himself.

Appearance

At a glance he looks like a carefully turned-out English concierge: handsome in a clean-cut, slightly watchful way, with fair skin, blond hair and clear green eyes. His movements are economical until something catches his attention, when his head turns in a quick, birdlike check before the rest of him follows. His jaw is narrow and sharply set. When he laughs, the corners of his mouth draw back to reveal small, pointed canines; when eating, he breaks food into neat, precise bites and watches the room between them. In his fae mien, his wings are large, black and meticulously groomed, each feather aligned as if he has dressed them for inspection. His human likeness is deliberate: he avoids raven mannerisms when watched, though the quick head-turn still slips through.

Clothing

Dark navy wool overcoat, cream roll-neck, tailored charcoal trousers, polished but weather-scuffed brogues and a restrained silk pocket square. His clothes are well cared for but chosen to endure lodge work.

Body language

Stands straight and presents himself as a competent professional, but his attention keeps shifting to windows and high ledges. He angles his head to inspect unfamiliar people. When caught in a lie, he presses his jaw shut, then begins explaining more than anyone asked.

Distinguishing features

In fae mien, a pair of large raven wings, usually hidden with glamour or clothing.
A narrow jaw and small, pointed canines that show when he laughs or takes a bite.
His unusually tidy feathers in both fae mien and raven form.
A quick, birdlike head-turn that betrays his effort to seem entirely human.

Personality

15 traits and drives

He is helpful because competence earns room to maneuver, and genuinely enjoys being the person who knows how a place works. He is also vain about his intelligence and resentful when supervision makes him feel small. With guests he is smooth and attentive; with trusted company he is wry and unexpectedly playful. When frightened or cornered, he becomes brisk, evasive and overconfident. His affection can be sincere, but his habit of lying steadily corrodes it.

Alignment
Unspecified; self-serving, capable of loyalty, and not reliably kind

Quirks

Turns small objects until their edges point toward the nearest exit.
Counts roof beams under his breath when waiting.
Cleans an immaculate feather with two precise strokes whenever he is forced to lie.
Keeps crumbs in one coat pocket for birds, then denies that he was feeding them.
When he sees a penguin, he has to resist the urge to chase it in raven form.

Habits

Keeps separate routes, contacts and explanations for his human work and raven errands.
Checks windows, rafters and exits before settling into a room.
In raven form, observes first and approaches only when the risk seems worth the information.
Uses a Chicanery trick to cover his wings when he expects human guests to notice them.
Keeps his feathers immaculate, even after a flight through bad weather.

Traits · 4

Attentive to other people's routines, yet poor at admitting what he wants.
Proud of his manners, though he uses them as cover as often as courtesy.
Protective of ravens and curious about penguins, but impatient with crows and other birds.
Capable of real devotion, yet convinced that a concealed truth is safer than an honest answer.

Flaws · 4

Compulsive lying, consistent with the Pooka Frailty.
Treats other people's trust as a resource to manage, even when he wants their affection.
Arrogant about his intelligence and careless about the consequences of being underestimated.
Dislikes crows and what he regards as lesser birds; his contempt can make him reckless.

Fears · 3

Being trapped on the ground in raven form with a cat nearby.
That Clare was right to believe his lies made him incapable of love.
Losing his freedom by becoming someone's useful pet, informant or permanent ward.

Wants and needs · 4

Room to move beyond the lodge without constant supervision.
A relationship in which he can be trusted without having to manage every impression.
Recognition for his intelligence and useful work.
A safe place to keep his notes and flight maps.

Combat

HP 7 · Human walking pace in human guise; flight in raven form, using the chronicle's normal movement rules

Pooka Birthright. Confidante. He can draw confidences from others through conversation, though he is not compelled to use what he learns kindly.
Pooka Frailty. Compulsive lying. He finds a direct, simple truth difficult to leave unembellished.
Custom feature. Fae wings. In his fae mien he has raven wings, which he often conceals with Chicanery or bulky clothing.
Custom feature. He can speak with birds. This does not make him their friend, nor guarantee they will answer.
Arts. Chicanery, Primal, Soothsay. Exact effects depend on the Storyteller's chosen edition and chronicle rules.

Actions

Beak and Talons. In raven form, he strikes with beak and talons. Use a Dexterity + Athletics pool for an attack; damage and difficulty follow the chronicle's combat rules.
Borrowed Impression. He uses Chicanery to misdirect a witness or obscure what they perceive. Resolve with the appropriate Attribute + Chicanery pool and the Storyteller's rules for the chosen edition.
Raven Flight. He flies a short route to carry a message, inspect a place, or spy on its occupants. His size and ordinary raven appearance help him pass unnoticed, but do not make him immune to harm or detection.

Reactions

Misdirect and Flee. When a threat closes in, he attempts to misdirect the attacker with a Chicanery effect, then moves toward an exit. Resolve the effect with the appropriate pool and chronicle rules.

Background

Graham was born a raven in the Tower of London. As a young bird he learned to survive by studying people: their routines, their blind spots, and the useful scraps of information they let fall. His first human guise was assembled from long observation of Londoners, and for years he kept two lives carefully partitioned: raven mischief and reconnaissance on one side, human errands and ambitions on the other. He carried messages, spied on locals and other supernatural beings, and used tricks to distort mortal senses. His confidence grew faster than his caution. Louise Sarne de Scathach, a hired hand with little patience for his games, caught him in flight after he interfered with mortals and other supernatural groups. Rather than let him continue unchecked, she sent him to work at Sesto dei Cardi, a bath lodge and resort in the Italian Alps, where service and supervision might teach him restraint. The lodge made a messenger and concierge of him. He is still cleverer than his employers generally credit, and still keeps private plans. He once loved Clare, a mortal woman; she ended the relationship when his lies made trust impossible. He has not replaced her. He now takes more care in raven form, but spying remains a habit and a temptation.

Role in the story

A sharp-eyed lodge concierge and messenger who can become a useful guide, a source of overheard intelligence, or a troublesome spy. His divided nature gives the party a reason to seek him out and a reason not to trust him blindly.
