Pol Brennick
Pol Brennick
At the table
Voice
A bright, slightly rasped voice with the dry edge of someone who has spent too many hours calling over wind and surf. His breath catches faintly on hard consonants after long climbs, and he puts a jaunty lift on Pol's name when introducing himself, as if it were the start of a bet.
He speaks quickly, with clipped phrases shaped by shouting signal calls over surf and rigging noise. His words tumble into wagers when he is nervous, but the cadence becomes brisk and precise when calling a crew through danger.

How to play them
Meet Pol's wagers with a question about what he has actually observed. Let him show off a small prediction or practical skill, then make the risk and the people affected by it concrete. If treated as a capable crewman rather than a child, he will share useful observations. If cornered or mocked, he blusters and tries to turn the exchange into a contest.
Goal
Earn the Gannet crew's trust as a full bell-hand, then prove that the strange acoustic pulses can be read without putting anyone at risk.
Motivation
To be respected by the Gannet's hardened crew and to make sense of the uncanny sounds before anyone else decides they are nothing.
Appearance
A young tiefling whose sweeping horns frame his face like the curved prongs of a ship's old signal bell. He moves with a forward-tilting bounce, always poised to dart around a shoulder or duck beneath a rope. His smile arrives a beat too early, brave enough to invite a wager and brittle enough to crack when someone names the danger plainly. His soot-dark fingertips and the faint smell of lamp oil mark him as a working crewman, while the little copper clapper he wears as an earring is an unexpected keepsake from his childhood as a bell-tower errand boy.
Clothing
A supple, salt-stiff leather jerkin over a patched wool shirt, narrow trousers tucked into deck boots, and a short weather cape with a deep pocket for chalk and small tools. His cuffs are blackened with bell grease.
Body language
Pol balances on the balls of his feet and keeps one hand near his tuning key. His horns tilt toward whatever he is listening to; when challenged, he grins and rolls a copper wager-coin across his knuckles. If he is genuinely frightened, his fingers stop moving and his gaze fixes on the nearest exit or line of escape.

Background
Pol grew up running messages between the bell towers and dock crews of Hearthfall, where he learned to identify boats by the different complaints of their rigging. A bell-hand on the Gannet crew took him aboard as a junior signal keeper. During a winter crossing, a soft, impossible note passed through the water and threw the crew's timing into confusion. Pol guessed when it would sound again and got the crew clear of a buckling ice lane. The veterans called it luck; Pol heard a challenge. Now he tracks strange acoustic pulses as if they were a game whose rules he can master. He wants the Gannet crew to trust him with a full watch, but his captain, Sella, keeps him on maintenance duty. His crewmate Brann, who once pulled him out of a freezing channel, worries that Pol's bets are turning a real warning into entertainment.
Role in the story
A vivid junior crewman whose reckless curiosity can make the party laugh before his observations turn ominous. Pol can provide firsthand evidence of recurring acoustic anomalies, but his confidence is far greater than his understanding of what may be answering them.
“A bell-hand on the Gannet crew took him aboard as a junior signal keeper.”
- Faction
- Junior bell-hand aboard the Gannet, an independent working vessel operating among the Frostmelt Archipelago's routes. He is not a member of the Concordat or the Glacial Vanguard.
