Voice

Usseth's voice has a dry, breathy edge, like air pushed through a narrow gap in stone. Her chest and throat carry the faint roughness of cold mountain winds and years of calling warnings across a moving escort. At ease, her breath is steady and her words clipped but warm. When rattled, her jaw clenches, her breathing turns papery, and the first syllable of a sentence may scrape before she regains control.

Her speech is economical and precise, shaped by years of giving escort instructions over wind and stone. She names physical facts before feelings, and often leaves a deliberate pause before answering a personal question. When relaxed, dry jokes slip out with startling plainness; when rattled, her consonants catch and her next breath comes through a dry rasp.

Speech patterns

Uses short, concrete sentences when discussing danger, work, or orders.
Asks a question back when someone offers sympathy, testing whether they want an answer or merely a performance.
Calls people by their names when she means to challenge them.
Uses dry, matter-of-fact humor around people she trusts.

How to play them

Begin with practical questions and offer choices rather than commands. Do not touch her chain or anklets without asking. Usseth responds best to people who keep promises, address attendants directly, and explain what they want. She tests strangers with small truths before sharing anything dangerous.

Goal

Secure medicine for Suth, then find a way to end her palace contract without putting Tovan or the rescued page in danger.

Motivation

To protect the people she loves without letting the palace decide what her courage is for.

Appearance

Tall and athletic, Usseth holds herself with a dancer's spring-loaded balance and a guard's disciplined stillness. Her warm bronze skin has small, overlapping copper scales across her cheekbones, shoulders, and forearms, their edges catching the light like hammered foil. A slender draconic snout gives her profile a sharp, elegant line beneath swept-back horns. Her amber eyes look down toward whoever is tending her restraints, sad but alert. Her russet-tufted tail curls lightly around the palace rail, its tip making small, measured adjustments to keep her balanced. Bare clawed feet are dust-marked, with gold-painted nails dulled at the tips. One unexpected detail: she has a tiny, almost comically neat ink drawing of a turnip on the inside of one wrist, carefully renewed whenever it wears away. She leaves an impression of restrained motion, as if every still pose is a choice rather than obedience.

Clothing

Emerald velvet courtwear is fitted beneath a ruby-set light iron breastplate. A very thin russet sash hangs at her hips. Ruby-ornamented iron calf guards and a ruby collar mark her ceremonial status, while matching anklets join to a finely linked trailing restraint chain. Her feet are bare, dust-marked, and clawed, with gold-painted nails. A curved saber rests at her hip.

Body language

Her shoulders remain square even when her gaze is lowered. She balances lightly on the balls of her feet, with her tail curled around a rail or chair leg. When unsettled, her jaw works once from side to side and a dry rasp catches in her breathing. She watches hands more than faces, especially hands near keys, blades, or the chain.

Personality

14 traits and drives

Usseth can be formally compliant without being inwardly submissive: she follows harmless instructions with exact discipline, but makes a requester explain any order that could hurt someone. In a calm room she is watchful, dryly funny, and unexpectedly patient with nervous people. When frightened, she becomes brisk and practical. When angry, her jaw tightens, her breath catches in a rough, papery rasp, and she stops pretending not to understand an insult.

Alignment
Protective of the powerless, distrustful of authority, and willing to break unjust laws; not consistently merciful.

Quirks

Turns the wooden top once before making a decision, then watches it wobble to a stop.
Counts stair treads under her breath and starts over if someone interrupts.
Taps each claw against a rail in a pattern of three, pause, two, whenever she is waiting.
Keeps the tiny turnip drawing on her wrist meticulously fresh, though she refuses to explain the joke.
When offered a drink, smells the cup first, then thanks the giver whether or not she accepts it.

Habits

Counts exits and checks the nearest rail before accepting a seat.
When treated with respect, she answers plainly and may offer practical help without being asked.
When someone speaks to an attendant as though they were furniture, she turns her full attention to that person and stops responding to everyone else.
In a crisis, her posture becomes very still before she moves with sudden, exact speed.

She interprets offers of help as possible attempts to gain leverage.
She can mistake self-sacrifice for the only honorable choice.
Her anger at cruelty can override a careful escape plan.

Fears · 3

That her mother will die while Usseth is kept at the palace.
That she will be forced to choose between escape and protecting someone who cannot flee.
That the palace will turn her rescue of the page into evidence that she is useful only as a weapon.

Medicine for her mother
A private conversation with the rescued page about Bruk's falsified report
A safe chance to inspect the pass where her father disappeared
Someone to ask what she wants without treating the answer as a command

Combat

HP 38 · 30 feet per round, custom Generic Fantasy movement measure

Usseth keeps the saber between danger and anyone she has chosen to protect. She uses the rail, furniture, and her own chain to limit an opponent's approach, then aims for a weapon hand or a knee rather than killing blows. If escape is possible, she takes it. If someone threatens an attendant or a child, she stops holding back.

Custom feature. Copper-blooded. Usseth can exhale a brief cone of sparks that scorches dry tinder and forces someone at arm's reach to recoil. It is not a spell.
Custom feature. Chain sense. While wearing her anklets, Usseth can feel a tug or vibration through the trailing chain and tell whether its far end is being pulled, lifted, or dragged.
Custom feature. Palace poise. Usseth can hold a balanced, nearly motionless stance on narrow rails or uneven stone, though doing so does not make her immune to being moved.

Actions

Curved Saber. Custom Generic Fantasy action: Make one saber strike against a nearby target. On a successful attack test, deal cutting damage.
Tail Sweep. Custom Generic Fantasy action: Usseth lashes her tail at a nearby target. On a successful attack test, deal bludgeoning damage and the target must succeed at a resistance test or stumble, losing its next movement.
Cinder Breath. Custom Generic Fantasy action: Usseth exhales sparks at one target within a few paces. On a successful attack test, deal fire damage and ignite exposed, easily flammable material. She can use this once before needing a short rest.

Reactions

Interpose. Custom Generic Fantasy reaction: When a nearby ally is struck, Usseth may move beside them and use her saber to deflect the next ordinary weapon blow aimed at them. This does not stop an area attack.
Turn the Chain. Custom Generic Fantasy reaction: When an enemy grabs her or the chain, Usseth twists with the pull. The aggressor must succeed at a resistance test or lose its grip; on a failure, Usseth may shift a short distance.

Rewards they can give

If trust is earned, Usseth can guide the party through palace service corridors and identify which watch officers are bribed or compromised.
She may give the party the wooden top as proof of trust, though she will ask for it back once the danger passes.

Background

Usseth was born among the upland dragon clans, where children learned balance on narrow cliff paths before they were trusted with a blade. Her mother, Suth, repaired roof tiles and taught her to read weather from the smell of stone; her father vanished during a winter caravan crossing. At sixteen, Usseth joined a palace escort to earn medicine for Suth's failing lungs. During a mountain pass ambush, she disobeyed an order to leave a wounded page behind and carried him through a rockslide. The page survived, but the escort captain blamed her for the delay and sold her service contract to the palace household as punishment and debt settlement. That day changed her: she stopped believing that courage alone could make a powerful person honorable. She now serves under binding contract as a ceremonial guard and is kept in ruby-set iron anklets when off duty. Attendant Tovan, who checks the chain at her feet, quietly brings news from the kitchens and treats her like a person. Usseth's former captain, Bruk, has since risen to command the palace watch and still insists that she owes him obedience. Her current problem is that Suth's medicine is running out, while the palace intends to send Usseth with a diplomatic party through the same dangerous pass where her father disappeared.

Role in the story

A restrained palace guard whose apparent compliance conceals a careful moral independence. She can become an ally, a source of palace intelligence, or the focus of a rescue and contract-breaking conflict.
