Sarasha
Sarasha
At the table
Voice
A dry, weather-roughened voice shaped by long patrols shouting over wind, water, and creaking timber. Her instructions are clipped and easy to hear; her jokes come out with mock ceremony. When angry, she speaks faster and more plainly, never softening the point.
Her voice has a dry rasp from years of calling warnings across wind and water, with clipped consonants learned from giving clear instructions in bad weather. She speaks in practical bursts while on duty, but with Rukata she stretches jokes into elaborate fake boasts. When angry, she gets faster and more explicit, naming exactly who is in danger and what needs to stop.

How to play them
Begin with wry, familiar banter if Rukata is present, then judge newcomers by whether they respect frightened people and follow a sensible safety plan. Sarasha is generous with directions, patrol information, and a place to warm up, but refuses to let outsiders use the watch as a private weapon. Earn her confidence by bringing verifiable information about the missing supplies or helping a neighbor without demanding praise.
Goal
Find out who is diverting the night watch's supplies and keep the east causeway residents from being driven out before the next spring flood.
Motivation
Protect the people who have to live with the consequences after the watch moves on, and prove that careful attention can save lives as surely as a strong arm.
Appearance
Sarasha carries herself like a door that has learned to walk: shoulders square, chin slightly tipped toward whoever is speaking, and weight already settled to turn an argument into an exit route. Her dusky wine-red skin has a fine, matte texture, and her swept-back horns are ridged like old tree roots, polished at their tips from years of absent-minded handling. Her dark hair is cropped close at the sides and gathered into a short, practical crest. In a crowded room her pale amber eyes rarely stay on a face; they travel from hands to doors to the feet of anyone standing too close to a friend. She moves with a guard's economical precision, but sometimes plants her feet in a ludicrously theatrical duelist's pose just to make a nervous recruit laugh. Unexpectedly, she keeps a tiny bundle of bright paper kites tucked in her coat and repairs them for children on her rounds.
Clothing
A weatherproof charcoal coat with a high collar, patched at both elbows, over a padded vest and practical wool trousers. Her watch badge is pinned inside the lapel rather than displayed. A narrow red sash holds her whistle, keys, and a small roll of kite paper.
Body language
Within a minute of meeting someone, she will have checked the nearest exit and brushed a thumb over the notch in her whistle. She leans toward people she trusts, even while pretending to be unimpressed, and gives strangers a measured side-on stance that keeps her hands free. When amused, one horn tilts toward the speaker before her mouth admits it.

Personality
14 traits and drivesSarasha needles friends with bold, shameless flirtation, but is quietly attentive to their limits and remembers small needs they never asked her to remember. With strangers she is wary and matter-of-fact; with frightened locals she becomes patient and gently funny. AC 13 · HP 9 · 30 ft.Sarasha is a cautious guard, not a champion. She holds a narrow approach with her spear, keeps civilians behind cover, and calls for help early rather than chasing a fleeing enemy. She uses the crossbow to discourage attackers at range and saves hellish rebuke for someone who commits to harming her or an ally. She yields ground to protect a retreat route and will disengage if the fight is lost.

Background
Sarasha grew up in Rukata Moor, where the boardwalks creak louder than gossip and a missed lantern can leave a whole lane to the marsh. She joined the night watch young, partly for the steady meals and partly because she could not stand watching frightened neighbors try to protect one another without a plan. On her first winter patrol, a flooded sluice trapped her and her fellow guard, Rukata Moor, beneath a collapsed footbridge. Sarasha wanted to rush the water; Rukata made her stop, listen, and find the old maintenance crawlspace by following the current's change in pitch. They escaped together, and the experience changed her from a bold brawler into a patient guardian who treats listening as a survival skill. Years of shared shifts, ugly scrapes, and ridiculous flirtatious jokes have made them comrades who trust each other's judgment without needing to say so. Now the Moor's night watch is short-staffed, several homes near the east causeway have been marked for eviction, and Sarasha is trying to discover who has been diverting the watch's supply wagons. She suspects an official, but has no proof and refuses to put Rukata in danger by acting on a hunch.
Role in the story
A capable local ally and source of grounded information about Rukata Moor. Her investigation into missing watch supplies can lead the party into civic intrigue, while her bond with Rukata offers a clear emotional stake and a chance to see how years of trust withstand pressure.
