At the table

“re short a guard,”
From how they speak

Voice

A dry, chest-forward speaking voice with a slight rasp from dust and cold nights under canvas. He projects easily across a wagon yard, but the sound catches at the back of his throat when he has to discuss the leak. His laugh is a short, startling bark.

His speech is practical and densely packed with specifics, shaped by years of calling counts over wagon noise and arguing over deliveries. He clips the ends of ordinary sentences but stumbles into long, over-detailed explanations when nervous. He does not lower his voice when angry; instead, his jaw locks and each word lands like a correction to a faulty tally.

Speech patterns

Qualifies statements with practical caveats: "If the count is right, and it usually is..."
Answers emotional questions with a useful fact before attempting a personal answer.
Repeats a person's last few words when buying time to think.
Uses wagon and inventory language for people: "We're short a guard," or "Don't spend your luck all at once."

How to play them

Tovin is most forthcoming when asked concrete questions about loads, routes, and timing. Treat him with patience and he will share useful details, though he edits out his own involvement. If accused directly, he denies too quickly, then tries to trade practical information for a chance to explain.

Goal

Keep the remaining caravan alive, prevent the leak from being traced to him, and find a way to make amends without surrendering himself to a mob.

Motivation

Tovin wants to turn an ugly act into a survivable one: keep the survivors fed, find who used the information, and avoid being remembered only as the man who sold them out.

Secret · GM only

Appearance

A compact, slightly forward-leaning man whose movements have the economical starts and stops of someone forever counting steps between wagons. His skin is weather-browned, with a pale strip across his brow where his cap usually sits. His jaw is broad and works side to side before he answers difficult questions; when he eats, he chews with his lips tucked tight, exposing small, crowded teeth. His laugh is a sudden bark that reveals one conspicuously gold-capped canine. A battered brass measure hangs from his belt, polished bright only along the thumb groove where he rubs it when frightened. He leaves the impression of a man trying to make himself smaller without ever losing sight of the exits.

Clothing

A soot-brown wool coat with deep cargo pockets, patched at both cuffs; a faded green waistcoat; a leather apron softened by grease; a knitted cap pulled low; and boots repaired with mismatched soles. Every pocket has a purpose and at least one has a hidden pocket.

Body language

He keeps his elbows tucked close and one hand near the brass measure at his belt. While listening, his jaw shifts as though sorting figures. When caught off guard, he presses his tongue against the gold-capped canine and looks toward the nearest wagon or doorway.

Personality

12 traits and drives

Tovin is methodical but not cold; he can remember exactly how much flour remains while failing to say the kind thing someone needs. He is eager to be useful and resentful when people treat him as disposable. In ordinary company he makes dry jokes and offers practical comforts. Under scrutiny he becomes defensive, overexplains mundane details, and hides behind arithmetic. Around the injured, his brisk manner softens into attentive patience.

Alignment
Neutral

Quirks

He taps the brass measure twice against his thigh before making a promise.
He sorts meals into imaginary portions before taking his own.
He calls loose buttons "unsecured cargo" and will stop a conversation to sew one back on.
He chews the inside of his cheek when someone says the word "schedule."

Habits

Counts wagons, people, and visible exits whenever he enters a new place.
When calm, offers practical help before anyone asks; when frightened, becomes exacting about small errors.
Keeps volunteering to check the stores so he can be alone with the manifests.
If someone mentions the dead at Ember Pass, he immediately asks what supplies remain.

Traits · 3

He wants to be trusted, but distrusts anyone who asks for the whole truth at once.
He is generous with food and stingy with information.
He can be brisk and competent in a crisis, then shake uncontrollably once the immediate danger passes.

Flaws · 3

He lies by omission whenever the truth could make him look culpable.
He clings to records even when a quick human judgment would be wiser.
When cornered, he can become petty and blame others for details he mishandled.

Fears · 3

That the survivors will learn he sold the route and decide justice means a rope.
That Briska will discover his part before he can explain what he intended.
That another preventable death will be entered in his memory as a number he failed to protect.

Wants and needs · 3

Protection from the caravan survivors while he decides whether to confess
A chance to speak with Briska without being interrupted by accusation
Evidence of who received the route information and what they did with it

Combat

AC 11 · HP 9 · 25 ft.

Tovin avoids a fair fight. He uses cover, throws packing chaff to interrupt an attacker, and retreats toward wagons or allies. If escape is blocked, he swings his ledger mallet once and tries to bargain for his life.

Quartermaster's Eye. Tovin can usually spot a missing crate, altered seal, or load that has been shifted out of sequence.
Custom feature, Panic Arithmetic. Under pressure, Tovin can estimate how long a small group can travel on its remaining food and water, but fear makes him overstate the danger.

Actions

Ledger Mallet. Melee Weapon Attack: to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 3 () bludgeoning damage. Tovin uses this only when cornered.
Packing Chaff. Tovin hurls a fistful of grit or loose packing chaff at a creature within 10 feet. The target must succeed on a Dexterity saving throw or have disadvantage on its next attack roll before the end of its next turn. Custom feature.

Reactions

Crate-Slip. When hit by an attack he can see, Tovin can duck behind a nearby cart, crate, or larger creature, gaining half cover against the triggering attack if the obstacle is between them. He must be able to move and have suitable cover within 5 feet.

Background

Tovin grew up weighing salt and dried fruit at a roadside store, learning early that a quarter-ounce mattered more to a hungry traveler than a grand promise. He joined caravan work as a young adult and became indispensable by remembering which axle groaned, which mule balked at smoke, and how much food each wagon actually carried. Years ago, during a winter crossing, he argued to press on despite a storm. A wagon overturned in a ravine and his younger brother, Perren, was among those killed. Tovin has since kept meticulous tallies, partly to prevent another disaster and partly to convince himself that numbers can keep people safe. Recently, pressed by debt and threatened with the loss of his home, he sold a copy of the caravan's route and guard schedule to an intermediary. He told himself it was only a warning meant to delay the train. The attack at Ember Pass proved otherwise. He is now trying to help the survivors while quietly steering suspicion away from the quartermaster's records. His former mentor, Senneth, still trusts him; his estranged sister, Briska, has come to the pass looking for answers about the leak.

Role in the story

A frightened witness and compromised ally in Prelude Session 5: Siege at Ember Pass. Tovin can identify missing supplies, reconstruct the caravan's movements, and eventually reveal how the enemy learned the route. His cooperation depends on whether the party offers protection, compassion, or proof that the truth can help the survivors.
