Mara Karr
Species
Human
Appearance
Mara Karr is a wiry, sharp-eyed woman whose body seems assembled from rope, weathered leather, and stubbornness. Her sun-browned skin is crosshatched with pale salt scars, old knife nicks, and a long white seam beneath her left ear. Close-cropped iron-gray hair lies flat against her skull like a brush cut by wind. She moves with the quiet, balanced sway of someone who spent decades standing on pitching decks, even when walking across perfectly solid stone. Her hands are narrow and heavily callused, with ink embedded permanently around the nails. She leaves the impression of a gull watching a battlefield, alert, economical, and impossible to surprise. The contradiction is her smile, which is unexpectedly warm and almost grandmotherly when she is speaking to frightened dockworkers or children.
“Low, clipped, and precise, with a faint harbor accent. Mara speaks as if every word has a weight limit.”

Distinguishing Features
A pale scar runs from beneath her left ear to the corner of her jaw.
Her left index finger is permanently crooked from a snapped rigging line.
She wears a tiny black glass bead on a cord around her wrist, taken from the wreckage of the Black Shoal transports.
Her brass spyglass bears dozens of hair-thin notches, one for every operation she considers unresolved.
She smells faintly of lamp oil, sea salt, and bitter tea.
Voice
“A weathered contralto with the rasp of distant surf, controlled even under threat. Her rare laughter is brief, surprised, and immediately hidden behind a cough.”
Clothing
A dark sea-green doublet reinforced with supple boiled leather, slate-gray trousers, soft-soled boots, a weatherproof cloak clasped with a plain iron hook, fingerless gloves, and a brass-tubed spyglass secured tightly to her belt
Body Language
Mara stands with one foot slightly forward and her weight centered, ready for a sudden shift. She rarely blinks during an interrogation. When angered, she becomes nearly motionless, rubbing the brass rim of her spyglass with one thumb. Genuine affection makes her awkward: she looks away, clears her throat, and finds a practical task for the recipient.
