At the table

Voice

A warm, lilting voice with a salt-worn rasp, shaped by years of bargaining over surf and crowded docks. Her name, Onaia Sere, comes out with a gentle lift, while her sales descriptions skip along with cheerful precision.

Her voice is warm and lilting, with a soft rasp from years of salt air and dockside talk. She shapes words carefully, as if every sentence were a bargain both sides should understand. When selling, her rhythm skips lightly between details; when discussing routes, she becomes exact and economical.

Speech patterns

She makes conversation through questions about meals, repairs, and local needs, rather than asking directly about politics.
She describes her goods with cheerful, tactile detail, tapping a jar or flexing a basket as she speaks.
When pressed about routes, she answers with a question about the weather or the listener's own business.
She uses gracious phrases even when refusing a request, but her words become unusually precise when discussing what she has witnessed.

How to play them

Offer practical goods and warm conversation first. Let Onaia talk about food, repairs, and the needs of a community. She grows guarded if asked where cargo travels, who handles it, or why she is taking notes. Trust is earned through patience and discretion, not intimidation.

Goal

Collect reliable, non-confrontational evidence of Cult of the Kraken or Red Wanderer activity and deliver it safely to her contacts.

Motivation

She wants to keep small communities safe from forces that treat ports and people as pieces on a trade board, while proving that careful observation can matter as much as a blade.

Appearance

Onaia's calico coat breaks into warm patches of russet, soot-black, and cream, each pattern distinct enough that people remember which shoulder carries the dark saddle-shaped patch. Her fur looks combed and plush, but the tips of her whiskers are often dusted with wicker fibers or pale ceramic grit from handling her wares. She moves with an easy, spring-loaded grace, tail making small corrections as she threads crowded docks. Her amber eyes sparkle with mischief, yet they keep drifting to hands passing parcels, doorways, and the gaps between stacked cargo rather than meeting a speaker's gaze for long. A battered little brass measuring scoop hangs at her belt; its handle has been worn nearly smooth where her thumb rubs it.

Clothing

A well-cut trader's coat repeats the russet, black, and cream of her calico markings in playful blocks, with a cream scarf and russet cuffs. The practical garments have hidden inside pockets, reinforced knees, and a sturdy belt hung with sample wares, a small brass scoop, and a weatherproof notebook.

Body language

In company, she leans forward with open paws and an inviting smile. When routes or cargo manifests are mentioned, her ears turn toward the speaker while her eyes begin counting exits, hands, and nearby containers. Her tail curls around a chair leg when she is concealing a concern.

Personality

12 traits and drives

Onaia is sociable over supper and genuinely enjoys making strangers feel welcome, yet she treats business routes as locked doors. Her playful manner is not a mask so much as a choice she makes carefully; when she senses danger, jokes give way to methodical attention. She can be generous with practical help and miserly with information, even when the two impulses pull against each other.

Quirks

She taps the rim of a jar twice before describing it, even when the jar is not for sale.
She turns her brass scoop so its worn handle points toward whichever doorway she intends to use.
She remembers customers by the repairs they need and brings up those repairs before she remembers their names.
She tucks one whisker behind an ear when someone asks a question she has already decided not to answer.

Habits

She offers to demonstrate a basket, jar, or digging tool while quietly noting who watches the wares and who watches the harbor.
At supper she is sociable and playful, trading stories and remembering small details about everyone at the table.
When cargo routes come up, she redirects the conversation toward prices, weather, or the usefulness of her samples.
She records observations in terse marks hidden among ordinary inventory notes, then checks her surroundings before writing.

Combat

AC 22 · HP 70 · 25 feet; climb 15 feet

Onaia avoids a fight and tries to leave before anyone realizes she has been observing them. If trapped, she uses illusions and gusts to spoil an enemy's aim, then retreats toward cover or an exit. She attacks only to create an opportunity to escape, and will not pursue a fleeing opponent.

Tabaxian heritage. She has a climb Speed of 15 feet and can use her claws as agile unarmed attacks, dealing slashing damage.
Sorcerous bloodline, custom. Her innate magic manifests as sharp gusts, deceptive illusions, and brief bursts of protective force. Her spell DC is 22 and her spell attack modifier is +14.
Prepared observer. Onaia is trained to notice patterns in cargo handling, unfamiliar insignia, and changes in a community's routines. This is a narrative specialty, not a separate mechanical bonus.

Spells

Figment (cantrip, illusion). One action. She creates a small harmless sensory illusion, such as a rustle behind a listener or a shifting mark on a jar. Suitable for distraction, not for causing damage.
Gust of Wind (cantrip, evocation). One action. She conjures a puff of wind that can move a light object, scatter loose papers, or briefly distract a creature. This is a custom cantrip-like effect.
Pockets of the Deep (level 2, conjuration). Two actions. Onaia creates a concealed pocket of space around one small object, as the spell. She mainly uses it to hide notes or a rubbing.
Invisibility (level 2, illusion). Two actions. Onaia becomes invisible until the spell ends, she uses a hostile action, or she otherwise breaks the spell's conditions. She uses this to escape observation, not to initiate attacks.
Illusory Creature (level 2, illusion). Two actions. Onaia creates an illusory image of herself or another creature, as the spell. She uses the image to draw attention away from an exit.
Crackling Current (cantrip, evocation). Two actions. She sends a sharp bolt of electricity at a target within 60 feet, spell attack +14, dealing electricity damage.

Actions

Claw. Melee, claw +14 (agile, finesse), Damage slashing.
Crackling Current. Ranged spell attack +14, range 60 feet, Damage electricity. This is a custom cantrip-like magical attack for this NPC.
Misdirecting Glimmer. Two actions. Onaia casts a brief, disorienting illusion around a creature within 30 feet. The target attempts a Will save. On a failure, it is off-guard until the start of Onaia's next turn. This is a custom spell-like action.

Reactions

Slipstream Feint. Trigger: A creature Onaia can see targets her with a ranged attack. Onaia gains a +2 circumstance bonus to AC against the triggering attack as a gust of magic and a quick sidestep spoil its line. This is a custom reaction.

Background

Onaia learned trade by carrying small useful goods between isolated coves: wicker baskets, ceramic jars, hand spades, and the humble tools a settlement cannot easily replace. She discovered that supper tables loosen tongues more reliably than bargaining does, and became known for warm conversation, careful manners, and an instinct for remembering who buys what. Years ago, a storm drove her vessel to Brask Hekur. She spent a night helping families move supplies above the harbor's flooded lower steps, then met a tabaxian researcher there who offered her regular work gathering observations from the islands. Elven patrons based out of High Rock later hired her to watch for evidence of the Cult of the Kraken or the Red Wanderer. The work changed after she found a hidden mark on a crate that matched a symbol described in her instructions. She did not confront anyone. Instead, she copied its placement and left before the crew returned. Now she is back on the route with a growing list of suspicious cargo patterns, a researcher awaiting her notes in Brask Hekur, and a fear that one of her friendly customers has begun to recognize her questions.

Role in the story

A friendly traveling merchant whose innocent sample goods let her move between communities. She can supply leads about suspicious cargo and local patterns, but her instructions are to watch and report, never to confront suspected agents.
