Commander Varek Iron-Lung
Commander Varek Iron-Lung
At the table
Voice
A dry, rasping voice with a faint whistle on the inhale, the sound of air forcing past old damage. He projects from his chest when work demands it, though a long climb leaves the words clipped and breath-short. His laugh is abrupt and gravelly, punctuated by the click of his teeth.
He speaks in short, workmanlike clauses shaped by a lifetime of shouting over drills and rockfall. His raspy words catch on damaged breath, especially after climbing or exertion. He favors concrete terms such as pressure, support, air, and exit; when angry, his jaw locks and the consonants become harsher, while his volume stays controlled.
Speech patterns
How to play them
Varek respects competence, plain speaking, and anyone who remembers the names of workers lost underground. He tests newcomers with a practical problem before sharing sensitive information. Show him proof of a rescue or a credible route and he will bargain; treat miners as expendable or claim credit for their labor and he will end the conversation. Genuine concern for his sister's memorial or his breathing earns a brief, uncomfortable honesty.
Goal
Secure the falsified safety records, force an honest accounting of the miners killed by the company, and keep the Deep Delvers focused on rescue rather than revenge.
Motivation
To protect miners from the people who profit from their deaths, while keeping his rescue network from hardening into the same kind of machine.
Appearance
Varek is broad through the shoulders, with a low, forward-leaning posture that makes him seem to be listening through the soles of his boots. Soot has worked into the creases around his mouth and the coarse stubble along his jaw. His lower teeth are blunt and uneven from years of cracking mineral crusts between them; when he laughs, the sound comes with a sharp click of tooth on tooth. He shifts his weight from heel to heel while waiting, testing the ground as if it might give way. His breathing whistles faintly through damaged lungs, and his coat carries the bitter tang of hot stone, old oil, and medicinal herbs. Unexpectedly, he folds scraps of discarded blasting paper into tiny, precise birds, leaving them on the bunks of miners who are afraid to sleep.
Clothing
A soot-darkened leather mining coat reinforced at the shoulders with overlapping plates, a canvas throat wrap, patched trousers, iron-toed boots, and a belt crowded with chalk, wedges, wire, and tools. His coat's inner lining is stitched with small paper birds.
Body language
He braces one boot against a wall or support whenever he stops. His eyes track ceilings, vents, and exits before faces. During an argument he works his jaw as if grinding grit, and when someone is hurt his shoulders settle and his hands become quick and certain.

Personality
14 traits and drivesVarek is blunt and suspicious with officials, yet patient with frightened workers and quietly attentive to the injured. He is willing to make brutal choices when lives are at stake, then privately revisits every name on the casualty list. In calm moments he can be unexpectedly playful with children; under pressure, humor vanishes and he reduces every decision to time, air, and exits.

Combat
AC 18 · HP 170 · 25 ft.Varek chooses ground with cover and a clear retreat route. He uses a canister to break sightlines, then closes on isolated threats with the pressure pick, using maneuvers to trip, shove, or unnerve them. He reserves Action Surge for a decisive opening or a rescue, and disengages rather than pursue an enemy into unstable ground. He avoids prolonged exertion because his damaged lungs can turn a winning fight into a collapse.

Possessions
Background
Varek spent his first century hauling ore and clearing blocked galleries in the deep reaches beneath the Verdant Heart Nexus. He learned to read pressure changes by the taste of the air and to judge a tunnel's stability by the tremor in its support beams. A sudden ley-dust blowout once sealed his crew behind a collapsed face. Varek survived by forcing a narrow escape route through a fractured vent, but the pressurized dust and geothermal fumes permanently damaged his lungs. His younger sister, Szel, did not make it out. The company wrote the deaths down as an unavoidable natural event, though Varek found a falsified safety report hidden beneath the foreman's bunk. He helped organize miners into the Deep Delvers, first to rescue workers and expose such lies, then to resist the authorities who tried to crush them. Now he directs the network with hard arithmetic, risking lives only when he believes the alternative will cost more. He keeps contact with Tishka, a tunnel medic who treats his lungs and challenges his orders, and with Horthy, a former company surveyor who supplies maps but refuses to join openly. The duchy's surface officials call him a criminal. The miners call him Commander, a title he accepts only when someone needs a decision made.
Role in the story
A fiercely practical ally, rival, or morally difficult commander whose rescue network can guide characters into Verdara's deep reaches. Varek can reveal evidence of deliberate collapses and ley-dust anomalies, but his secrecy and willingness to sacrifice a few for many may put him at odds with the party.
“He learned to read pressure changes by the taste of the air and to judge a tunnel's stability by the tremor in its support beams.”
- Faction
- Commander of the Deep Delvers, a subterranean rescue and resistance network in Verdara. The network began by rescuing miners trapped in deliberate collapses and exposing fraudulent safety reports. Varek is hostile to exploitative mining authorities, but his first loyalty is to the people still underground.
