Voice

A measured, resonant voice that seems to come from inside the shield as much as from the sealed helm. It has the dry, close timbre of a latch being tested and the low shiver of water against stone. Its speech has no theatrical flourish; it speaks as someone accustomed to making itself understood through wind, rain, and the panic of others.

Its words arrive with the sound of a heavy door settling into its frame, each consonant distinct and carefully placed. The voice carries a faint undertone like water moving beneath ice, shaped by long years of listening at thresholds and speaking over rain. It avoids grand declarations, preferring clear statements of what it will protect and what it will not do.

Speech patterns

Uses short, weighty statements that sound like conditions being carefully set.
Frames questions around what will keep people safe through the night.
Names boundaries plainly and explains what would make it move.
When discussing the past, refers to its actions as choices rather than victories or failures.

How to play them

Approach with patience and plain intentions. The Shield will hear a frightened person before judging them, but it places itself between danger and the household as soon as it perceives a credible threat. It respects clear boundaries, honest apologies, and practical acts of care more than grand promises. It will refer disputes involving divine law to Holy Eldath rather than claim final authority.

Goal

Keep the household at Kök-Tek safe through the coming storm, discover why the old boundary stones are sinking, and preserve a path for peace without denying The Sword's need to act when violence becomes unavoidable.

Motivation

To make protection mean more than surviving the next blow: it wants those under its care to be able to live, argue, sleep, and grow without fearing what waits beyond the door.

Secret · GM only

Appearance

A broad, faceless figure stands between a small household and a far-off storm. Its overlapping plates are dull and rain-pitted, each edge worn smooth by centuries of bracing against doors, floodwaters, and frightened crowds. No face shows beneath its sealed helm, only a dark, depthless plane. A clean line of light from Holy Eldath rests across its shield, bright as sun on still water. The figure moves with the deliberate economy of a door closing against a gale, leaving the impression of weight held in reserve rather than menace. When it eats, which it does rarely and ceremonially, its helm parts to reveal a row of tiny, square, river-stone teeth that click together like carefully set tiles, an unexpectedly domestic sound from a divine guardian.

Clothing

Overlapping plates of weathered, dark metal cover a layered mantle of reed-fiber cloth. The edges are stitched with small green threads in Eldath's sign, repaired repeatedly rather than replaced.

Body language

It stands broadside to danger, shield angled like a roof over whoever is behind it. Its head turns in small, exact increments toward each sound. When listening, it lowers the shield a fraction; when making a decision, it plants its feet and becomes as immovable as a lintel.

Distinguishing features

A smooth, faceless helm with no visible opening, even when it speaks.
A narrow band of living light rests across its shield and does not reflect onto nearby surfaces.
Its gauntlets are polished in broad, crescent-shaped patches from years of lifting beams, holding doors, and carrying people to safety.
When it eats, its helm parts to show small, square teeth that click together with a distinctly homely sound.

Personality

14 traits and drives

Resolute and watchful, yet reluctant to turn vigilance into accusation. It will stand for hours in cold rain rather than frighten a child with needless movement, but once it judges a threshold endangered it becomes almost impossible to redirect. In calm company it is patient and unexpectedly attentive to small domestic routines; under pressure it grows formal, measuring every action against Eldath's law. It values endurance over glory, but privately wonders whether endurance can become cowardice when someone needs decisive help.

Alignment
Lawful good

Quirks

Tests every door latch twice, then taps the doorframe once as if greeting it.
Turns its shield a few degrees to shade small animals from strong sunlight.
Collects broken hinge pins and sorts them by length in a neat row beside the hearth.
When offered food, waits for the youngest person present to take the first bite.
Counts the beats between thunder and lightning, then tells the household how far away the storm is.

Habits

Counts the doorways and windows of every place it enters before acknowledging its inhabitants.
Takes the position between a threatened person and the source of danger, even when no one asks.
Waits for the frightened to speak first, but intervenes immediately if someone is cornered.
After danger passes, checks hinges, latches, and roof seams before accepting thanks.

Traits · 4

Offers shelter without demanding gratitude, but expects anyone accepting it to respect the safety of others.
Listens with remarkable patience, then makes decisions that are difficult to reverse.
Dislikes praise for standing firm and is quietly pleased when someone notices that the household slept safely.
Yields authority to Holy Eldath's law, while questioning whether its own interpretations have become too cautious.

Flaws · 3

Can mistake enduring a threat for resolving it.
Is slow to revise a boundary once it has declared one.
Finds it difficult to accept help, even when accepting help would better protect the household.

Fears · 3

That its stillness will be mistaken for permission to harm the people behind it.
That the storm will reach the household before it can learn why the boundary stones are sinking.
That The Sword may one day be right that restraint has become an excuse for delay.

Wants and needs · 4

Needs the household to evacuate before the storm reaches the basin.
Wants Tömür to keep learning, but not to mistake courage for the need to imitate a divine guardian.
Needs to discover whether the stolen boundary stone can be recovered without breaking its promise to the raiders' children.
Wants The Sword to understand that restraint can be an active defense.

Combat

AC 18 · HP 136 · 30 ft.

The Shield interposes itself, blocks routes, and separates attackers from the household rather than pursuing them. It uses Shield Bash to disarm or push enemies away, saving Threshold of Still Water for a moment when escape or de-escalation is possible. It does not attack a creature merely for approaching or speaking harshly. If the household is in immediate peril, it holds the narrowest defensible point until help arrives.

Threshold Ward (custom): While The Shield remains within 30 feet of a creature or dwelling it has sworn to protect, willing creatures there have advantage on saving throws against being frightened.
Restraint Before Force (custom): The Shield cannot make an attack against a creature that has not attacked, threatened, or knowingly endangered someone under its protection.
Eldath's Measure (custom): Once per day, The Shield can end one ongoing effect causing fear or magical compulsion on a creature it can see within 30 feet.

Actions

Shield Bash. Melee Weapon Attack: to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 12 () bludgeoning damage. The Shield may choose to deal no damage and push the target up to 10 feet instead.
Threshold of Still Water. Custom divine effect, 1/day. A pale line of light sweeps across a 20-foot radius centered on The Shield. Hostile creatures in the area must succeed on a Wisdom saving throw or be unable to willingly move closer to the household The Shield protects until the end of their next turn. This effect does not restrain them or prevent ranged attacks.
Hold the Line. The Shield braces its shield and declares a boundary it can see within 30 feet. Until the start of its next turn, creatures of its choice cannot pass through that boundary unless they succeed on a Strength check. This is a custom divine effect, not a spell.

Reactions

Interpose the Shield. When a creature The Shield can see attacks a creature within 5 feet of it, The Shield imposes disadvantage on the attack roll by interposing its shield. If the attack still hits, the protected creature gains resistance to the attack's damage.
Step Between. When a hostile creature moves within 5 feet of a creature The Shield is protecting, The Shield can move up to 10 feet to a space between them without provoking opportunity attacks. This movement cannot pass through solid barriers.

Services they sell

Can shelter innocents behind its shield and keep watch through the night.
Can explain the local customs and boundaries of Eldath's protection.
Can hold a doorway or narrow passage while others evacuate.

Rewards they can give

Safe passage through the household's protected threshold.
A night of shelter and a warning about the approaching storm.
The Shield's aid in holding a defensive position, if the party respects its restraint.

Background

The Shield is an outsider and lesser deity in the service of Holy Eldath, shaped from the first prayer spoken by people who barred a door against violence and chose not to answer it with violence of their own. For ages it guarded the ford at Kök-Tek, a place whose name is a worn corruption of an older word no local can translate. Its defining trial came when raiders crossed the ford during a flood. The Shield held the bridge and could have crushed their leader, but instead opened a safe passage for the raiders' children and the household trapped behind them. That choice cost it the bridge and taught it that protection is not the same as victory. It now watches over a small household at the edge of the basin: an elderly beekeeper named Gültek, her grandson Tömür, and a stubborn goat that has learned to sleep beneath its shield. The Shield answers to Eldath's law and yields the direct pursuit of attackers to The Sword, a fellow divine agent whose first syllable and temperament are unlike its own. Their cooperation is strained: The Sword believes restraint can invite another assault, while The Shield insists that force must have a limit. Meanwhile, the storm beyond the household has begun arriving earlier each night, and the old boundary stones are sinking into the mud.

Role in the story

A steadfast divine guardian, refuge for a vulnerable household, and moral counterweight to direct retaliation. The Shield can become an ally, a guide to Eldath's law, or an obstacle when the party's methods endanger innocents. Its hidden bargain over the boundary stone links the household's immediate danger to a larger conflict.
