Günther
Günther
At the table
Voice
A dry, close voice that seems to begin with a catch in the throat, followed by precise consonants and an old-fashioned German cadence. He sounds practiced at issuing orders but less certain when speaking about himself. His voice does not grow gentler when angry; it becomes more clipped and direct.
His voice is dry and close, with a faint rasp from disuse and a breathy catch before the first word. He speaks German with an old-fashioned, carefully articulated cadence shaped by military routines, then stumbles over modern terms learned online. Under strain, his sentences shorten into commands; when speaking to Kofi, he makes awkward attempts at ordinary conversation and often overexplains simple things.
Speech patterns
How to play them
Begin guarded and formal, assessing whether visitors know about the bunker or threaten Kofi. He responds better to practical offers than sympathy. A visitor who recognizes his hunger without flattering his ideology can hold his attention, but should set clear boundaries. Mentioning his apparent age may bewilder him; challenging his remembered history too aggressively can turn the conversation hostile.
Goal
Keep his bunker hidden, preserve his bond with Kofi, and discover whether anything remains of his humanity that is not just a useful story he tells himself.
Motivation
He wants his hunger to mean something. The harsh ideology he adopted gives him permission to hunt, but his attachment to Kofi and his secret tenderness toward the dead keep contradicting it.
Appearance
Günther looks like a well-kept German teenager who has been dressed for a winter that never ended. His pale skin has the waxy, faintly translucent cast of a corpse; after feeding, a temporary warmth rises beneath it, as if his body is remembering how to live. His blond hair is combed with military neatness, though damp air makes the ends curl against his temples. His blue eyes cloud toward a sick yellow when he is hungry. He takes up more space than his narrow frame should allow, holding doorways and standing too close without seeming to notice. Before speaking, he draws a dry breath through his nose and pauses as if waiting for someone buried far away to answer. Unexpectedly, he keeps a small, carefully tended computer setup in his bunker and treats its cables with more patience than he gives most people.
Clothing
A carefully maintained Second World War-era German overcoat with all insignia removed, plain dark trousers, sturdy old boots, and a high-collared shirt. The coat is brushed and mended, never decorated. A small strip of his burial shroud is hidden in an inner pocket.
Body language
He occupies thresholds as if standing guard, shoulders squared and chin raised. When hunger rises, he holds his elbows close, watches throats, and rubs his jaw as though working a bite loose. A sudden shift from darkness to bright light makes him stop mid-motion, turn his head in short searching angles, and lose track of what was just said.

Distinguishing features
Personality
17 traits and drivesProud and orderly in the small things, brutal and disordered in his judgments. With strangers he is stiff, suspicious, and quick to sort people into categories. With Kofi he can be unexpectedly attentive, remembering small preferences while refusing to call the bond affection. When hungry, he becomes impatient and fixates on pulse, warmth, and exposed skin. After feeding, he is briefly calmer and almost embarrassed by his own violence.
- Alignment
- Custom description: Predatory and authoritarian. He imposes a private, absolutist ideology on whom he considers deserving of harm, while remaining capable of fierce attachment to his one friend.

Combat
HP 6 · Custom narrative movement: human walking pace ordinarily; can make a sudden short dash through darkness using Slip Between Shadows. He chooses dim, confined ground, separates a target from companions, and attacks with sudden grapples and bites. He tries to make violence feel like a sentence he has already passed. Bright, high-contrast lighting unsettles him; a prepared opponent can exploit that. He retreats rather than risk discovery of the bunker or harm to Kofi.

Background
Günther remembers nothing of his life before the grave. His first clear memory is being packed into earth, awake enough to chew at himself in blind terror as he tried to make room to breathe. He emerged a Nachzehrer, a corpse-eater, and learned the world through hunger, winter, and the people he killed. During the First World War he deserted, an act he has carried as a private failure. When the Second World War began, he enlisted eagerly, mistaking its uniforms, commands, and hard certainties for a way to become whole again. The ideologies he embraced offered simple categories for his hunger: guilty, weak, enemy. They did not cure it. The old overcoat he wears dates from that period, scrubbed and mended until no insignia remain. He has lived through the decades since, but solitude has left his sense of time stunted; he insists he is still sixteen and cannot make the years fit together. In 2026 he survives near Berlin by robbing people he has judged corrupt or cruel, sleeping in a partly flooded bunker whose entrance he guards obsessively. A computer is his fragile connection to the present. His closest companion, Kofi, a relentlessly patient repair technician, brings him discarded electronics and checks that he has not vanished into the flooded rooms. Günther privately thinks of Kofi as family, though he has never said so plainly. His immediate problems are hunger, a failing laptop, rising water in the bunker, and a growing number of people asking where their missing acquaintances went.
Role in the story
A dangerous, tragic predator and possible recurring antagonist whose choices test whether compassion can coexist with accountability. He can offer access to hidden routes and local knowledge, but helping him conceal his crimes risks enabling them.
“His first clear memory is being packed into earth, awake enough to chew at himself in blind terror as he tried to make room to breathe.”
- Faction
- No current organization. He clings to an unnamed, personal ideology of ruthless judgment, assembled from old political convictions and his need to justify predation; it is not a formal faction.
