Voice

A dry, breath-catching rasp shaped by lamp smoke and tinctures, with crisp elven articulation and a faint scrape on sibilants. His words come in measured, compact phrases; when angry, he grows more exacting rather than louder.

His voice has a dry, breath-catching rasp from years of lamp smoke and late-night tinctures. Certain consonants scrape softly, while his elven diction keeps his phrasing clean and measured. He speaks in compact explanations when working, but his words become halting around memories of childhood. When angry, he becomes sharper and more exact, correcting details instead of raising his voice.

Speech patterns

Frames uncertain claims as questions, then lists what evidence would settle them.
Uses precise, technical language when discussing curses, but plain and unexpectedly warm language with frightened people.
Changes the subject to symptoms, ingredients, or practical details when someone asks about his father.
Under pressure, repeats a key noun once before committing to a decision.

How to play them

Begin guarded and observant, offering practical help before personal trust. He responds well to precise questions, respect for Vaenya's privacy, and evidence that a person is in danger. He becomes evasive if pressed about his father, but may share more after the party proves it can keep a secret.

Goal

Find a safe way to trace the curse-pattern connecting his Ashborn heritage, his Oneiros dreams, and his absent father without exposing Vaenya.

Motivation

He wants knowledge to protect people from curses and to reclaim a future from the Mandate's threat, but he also wants proof that his existence has an explanation he can understand.

Appearance

Teran has strong, finely cut elven features beneath a pair of swept-back horns, with a narrow jaw, high cheekbones, and a watchful, almost sleepless expression. His night-sky skin is a deep blue-black, dusted with pinpricks of pale light; brass-gold, sea-green, and jade scales edge his temples, collarbones, and tail, their bioluminescence brightening when he works magic. He moves carefully, placing each step as if testing whether the floor belongs to the waking world. His tail gives away emotions his face tries to conceal, curling close when worried and lashing once when annoyed. He smells distinctly of bitter lamp oil and crushed mint, a trace from the tinctures he uses to stay awake over his curse research. His grooming is almost fussy: horns polished, scales carefully oiled, and every stray hair pinned back even after a sleepless night.

Clothing

A high-collared charcoal travel coat lined with hidden pockets, soft boots, and layered wraps that conceal the scale patterns at his throat. He wears a fitted tail-slit sash and fingerless gloves stained with ink and herbs. The hems are carefully mended, and his brass clasps are polished despite the rest of his clothes being plain.

Body language

He keeps his shoulders angled toward an exit and folds his tail around one ankle when trying to appear relaxed. His fingers make tiny, precise tracing motions while he thinks. When Vaenya or his father is mentioned, the tail goes rigid before his expression changes.

Horns sweep back close to his head, polished to a muted brass sheen.
Jade and sea-green scales glimmer faintly in darkness, especially when he casts.
A flexible tail with a narrow finlike ridge betrays his mood.

Personality

14 traits and drives

Teran is intellectually fearless but socially cautious. He will test a dangerous spell if it might help someone, yet hesitates to accept even harmless kindness because gratitude feels like a debt. With strangers he is formal and watchful; with people in distress he becomes direct and unexpectedly tender. When engrossed in research he is patient with evidence and impatient with interruptions. Questions about his father can turn that patience into brittle defensiveness.

Alignment
Pragmatic and compassionate, though willing to deceive authorities to protect the hunted

Quirks

Turns cups so their handles point toward the nearest exit.
Counts three silent beats before answering a personal question.
Taps a fingernail against his Tideglass lens to check whether a room is truly quiet.
Names unfamiliar curses after the first ordinary object they resemble, then refuses to rename them.
Polishes his horns when anxious, even if he has just polished them.

Habits

Checks windows, exits, and reflective surfaces before settling into a room.
When absorbed in a curse, forgets meals and tracks time by the changing glow of his scales.
Uses small, harmless spells to test whether a place feels altered by the Oneiros.
If someone is threatened by authorities, his caution gives way to immediate, sometimes reckless intervention.

Traits · 4

Curiosity pulls him toward dangerous mysteries; caution makes him map every exit first.
He offers protection readily but has trouble accepting it.
He values clear evidence, yet is privately drawn to the meaning of dreams.
He is meticulous about his appearance and careless about sleep.

Flaws · 3

Treats his own safety as an acceptable cost of acquiring answers.
Withholds information until he has tested it, even when allies need to act quickly.
Can become coldly analytical when someone else's suffering resembles a magical problem he is studying.

Fears · 3

That his condition is not a curse to be reversed, but an essential part of who he is.
That investigating his father will expose Vaenya to the Draconic Mandate.
That the Oneiros is learning to reach him as easily as he reaches for it.

Wants and needs · 4

Time and a safe place to study the curse-patterns in his dreams.
Proof that pursuing his father will not endanger Vaenya.
A trusted companion willing to challenge his reckless research.
A way to keep the Mandate from discovering their hiding place.

Combat

HP 28 · 30 feet per round, custom baseline

Avoids a stand-up fight. He opens with Folded Ward, uses Glass Comet to keep foes away, and snares anyone trying to reach him. He saves Ashwake Burst for a crisis or to protect another person, then seeks cover or an escape route. He prioritizes disabling pursuers over killing them.

Background

Teran was raised by his mother, Vaenya Luthis, in Quadra Virex, where the two keep a low profile and change their routes often. His Ashborn heritage makes him a target of the Draconic Mandate, which would execute or conscript him. As a child, he first felt the Oneiros during a fever: he dreamed of a door beneath a black sea, woke speaking words he had never learned, and found his mother's old curse-charms shattered around his bed. Years later, a Mandate census patrol came close to uncovering them. Teran hid Vaenya and himself in a disused observatory, but a frightened burst of magic cracked its dome and revealed his nature to the patrol. They escaped; a neighbor who had helped them disappeared into Mandate custody. That failure turned his curiosity about curses into a consuming study. He now examines afflictions and unfamiliar magic in hopes of understanding his own Ashborn condition and eventually undoing it. Vaenya is his closest ally, but she becomes distraught whenever he asks about his elven father and refuses to speak of him. Teran suspects his father's absence is connected to the curse-patterns he sees in his dreams. He is currently searching for a way to investigate that connection without leading the Mandate to their door.

Role in the story

A hunted scholar and possible ally who can help the party understand curses and Oneiros disturbances. His research may reveal a path to a larger mystery, while his need to protect Vaenya can complicate any plan that draws attention to them.
