Voice

A chest-resonant, slightly dry voice with the breath control of someone accustomed to cold hikes and the clipped consonants of military instruction. He sounds most at ease when describing a route or making a practical plan; the name Ragnar Obstorth comes out more slowly, as if he is checking the sound before letting it go.

His voice is clear and workmanlike, shaped by Minnesota vowels, Army brevity, and the habit of making himself heard over wind and equipment. He clips unnecessary words when giving an order but lets sentences run longer when talking about trails or Italy. When angered, he becomes more exacting and repeats the disputed fact instead of raising his voice.

Speech patterns

Uses direct, practical sentences and gives instructions in a measured order.
Calls people by their names when trying to bring an argument back under control.
When discussing Italy or hiking, adds concrete details about weather, roads, and what he wants to see.
If asked about the horns in a reflection, answers the immediate question but avoids explaining what they mean to him.

How to play them

Be candid about ordinary matters and steady under pressure. He responds well to practical questions and people who give his friends room to explain themselves. Do not force the reflection issue; a calm, private conversation earns more trust than public confrontation. A direct challenge to the lieutenant's authority will make him weigh duty, resentment, and the safety of the group before he answers.

Goal

Finish his leave in Italy, decide how and when to ask Amelia to marry him, and find a way to keep the lieutenant's curiosity from defining his fae life.

Motivation

To remain dependable without letting other people's rank, grudges, or curiosity decide who he is.

Appearance

Kyle's mortal appearance is an outdoorsman's plainness made memorable by the way he occupies space: broad through the shoulders, steady-footed, and economical in movement, as though every doorway might be a narrow passage on a night march. His skin is fair and weather-reddened across the nose. His hair is sandy brown, clipped short at the sides and usually flattened by a cap. His eyes are pale blue-gray and habitually search windows, polished metal, and dark glass for reflections. He smells faintly of wool, cold air, and the sharp pine-clean scent of boot polish; he knows about the polish but not the pine. In a reflection, his fae mien is that of Ragnar Obstorth, a towering troll with slate-blue skin, a heavy brow, and blunt, ridged horns. Kyle often catches the horns first, then looks away.

Clothing

A white T-shirt printed with a picture of the Alps, black pants, running shoes, and a fine blue wool jacket. Small hiking patches are sewn on the inside of the coat, where only someone he trusts is likely to see them.

Body language

He stands planted and square without trying to loom, but his shoulders turn to shield the person he considers most vulnerable. He checks the inner seams of his coat with his thumb, especially when waiting for orders. Around mirrors or windows at night, his eyes go to the reflection before his face turns away.

Age

Distinguishing features

The smell of boot polish and wool follows him; he recognizes the polish but is oddly unaware of the pine-clean note.
His thumb repeatedly checks the hidden patches inside his blue coat.
Polished surfaces can show the horned troll Ragnar Obstorth where Kyle expects to see himself.
His posture is careful and grounded, but when he moves suddenly his fae strength makes the motion startlingly heavy.

Personality

16 traits and drives

Kyle is protective but not soft, and disciplined without being blindly obedient. Around people who need help, he is patient and quietly generous; when someone exploits that patience, he can become stubborn and sharply punitive. He is hopeful about a future with Amelia but distrustful of promises made by the Unseelie officer. In a crisis he turns decisive, then later replays whether he had the right to decide for everyone.

Alignment
Seelie by upbringing, now serving an Unseelie chain of command; his personal loyalties remain unsettled.

Quirks

Checks the hidden patches in his coat by touch whenever someone mentions a destination.
Counts steps across unfamiliar rooms, then pretends he was only looking for a better route.
Keeps tiny scraps of trail maps folded into the coat lining, even when he already knows the route.
If he sees Ragnar's horns in glass, he rubs one thumb over the seam of his coat and changes where he is standing.
Before agreeing to a plan, asks who will be responsible if it goes wrong.

Habits

Takes the position with the clearest view of the exits, then acts as if it was coincidence.
When the group argues, gives everyone one chance to state their case before making a decision.
Keeps his promises even when doing so costs him time, safety, or standing.
After catching his fae mien in a reflection, avoids reflective surfaces for a while and becomes noticeably more formal.

Traits · 4

Protective of his friends, yet unwilling to excuse their petty cruelty.
Proud of his service and rank, but uneasy when authority is used to manipulate him.
Drawn to new places and experiences, while keeping private records of every journey.
Hopeful about building a life with Amelia, but guarded about the parts of himself he cannot explain.

Flaws · 4

He takes responsibility for people who have not asked him to lead them.
His respect for rank makes it difficult to challenge the lieutenant directly.
He can hold a grudge with the same discipline he brings to a duty roster.
He dodges questions about the forced Chrysalis until silence becomes its own kind of lie.

Fears · 4

That the lieutenant will keep treating his Chrysalis and memories as an experiment.
That Ragnar's remembered lives will make Kyle feel like a temporary disguise rather than a person.
That his friends' grudges will force him to choose between protecting them and obeying orders.
That Amelia will mistake his evasions for a lack of trust.

Wants and needs · 4

To decide whether his loyalty to the lieutenant is duty, fear, or a habit he can still break.
To tell Amelia enough truth that an engagement would begin without a hidden foundation.
To learn what his fragments of Ragnar's past actually mean.
To keep Johnathan and Willie from turning every insult into a lasting feud.

Combat

HP 7 · Human walking or running pace in mortal seeming; in the troll mien, use the chronicle's normal movement rules for the scene. No edition-specific speed rating supplied.

Kyle prioritizes getting companions out of danger, controlling a doorway, and ending a fight quickly. He uses his troll strength to restrain or disarm when possible and treats his firearm as a serious last resort. He follows lawful safety procedures when circumstances allow, but the lieutenant's orders can put that discipline under strain.

Background

Kyle Svenson grew up Swedish-American in Minnesota, where family stories about stubborn ancestors and long winters gave him a practical respect for endurance. Before the Army, he learned to hike by reading weather, terrain, and the mood of whoever was walking beside him. Those habits made him a dependable soldier and, eventually, the unofficial leader of a small circle that includes Johnathan Kauffman, known in fae company as Burke VonBraken, and Willie Woods, known as Wyke Gorn. Kyle is a Sergeant, E-5, and outranks both men. His fine blue wool coat carries patches sewn on the inside, each marking a place he has seen and hiked; he keeps them hidden as a private map of a life he means to continue living. He is on leave to see Italy, with Amelia, his girlfriend, and a possible engagement on his mind. His first life-changing encounter with his fae nature was not a gentle awakening: a distant Unseelie Night-Marcher changeling, a Native Hawaiian First Lieutenant, pressed and maneuvered him into a forced Chrysalis, curious about the memories Kyle carried. Kyle had thought of himself as Seelie. Now he ferries messages upward for that officer while trying to understand fragments of Ragnar's past lives, which arrive as images, instincts, and unfamiliar grief rather than a clear history. The lieutenant's curiosity has not ended, and the small group's petty rivalries and vengeful habits are making Kyle's responsibility as their leader harder to separate from his duty as a soldier.

Role in the story

The party's practical leader and uneasy go-between: a capable soldier, a loyal friend, and a newly awakened troll whose fae identity was pulled into the open by someone else's curiosity.
