Unnamed courier
Unnamed courier
At the table
Voice
A dry, forward voice with a little rasp from cold air and years of calling across ferry landings. It carries clearly without sounding grand. They speak at a steady pace in ordinary conversation, speeding up when reciting directions and giving a blunt, practical edge to warnings.
Their words are clipped and well-articulated, shaped by years of speaking over wind, cart wheels, and ferry noise. They favor exact times and practical descriptions over metaphor. They rarely volunteer a name or guess about a sender, and when flustered they start listing landmarks as though reading a route aloud.
Speech patterns
How to play them
Be courteous but guarded. State the offer's terms plainly, including its demand for a fragment of the buried core, and refuse to speculate about the buyer. If the characters show concern for local safety, admit that the route has felt watched and ask them to investigate without touching the sealed packet.
Goal
Deliver the bounty offer on time without learning who placed it, then determine whether the search for the buried core fragment puts the road communities at risk.
Motivation
To make sure that no warning, plea, or instruction is lost merely because the road is cold, long, or frightening.
Appearance
A weather-browned human with a long, narrow face and a watchful expression that makes every doorway seem to interest them. They move with a brisk, slightly side-stepping gait, as if continually leaving room for someone to pass. Their grooming is unexpectedly meticulous: each short curl is combed into place, and their nails are scrubbed clean despite the road dust ground into their cuffs. They smell faintly of wet wool, bitter tea, and sealing wax. Their immaculate hair and careful posture seem almost absurd beside a patched travel coat and mud-caked boots.
Clothing
A well-brushed, dark umber travel coat with careful repairs at the elbows, a high wool collar, and a row of mismatched buttons. Their boots are sturdy and muddy, their gloves are neatly folded into one pocket, and a waxed shoulder satchel is secured beneath the coat.
Body language
They angle their shoulder toward the nearest exit without appearing to hurry. Their fingers repeatedly smooth the edges of their cuffs, while their gaze tracks hands whenever a sealed document is in view. When genuinely pleased, they stand squarely facing the other person and stop fidgeting.

Personality
13 traits and drivesPractical and brisk when handling work, unexpectedly tender toward stranded travelers, and privately superstitious about bells and winter weather. They trust a well-marked route more readily than a confident person, yet will risk their own safety to get a message to someone who needs it. In company they use dry humor; alone, they become methodical and replay every decision.

Background
Before carrying sealed messages, Unnamed courier kept the tide bell at a remote ferry crossing. One winter night, the bell rope froze stiff during a whiteout. A cart went over the unseen bank, and Unnamed courier heard the crash but could not make the warning carry through the storm. A survivor, a ferryman named Iven, later told them that a timely message might have saved the passengers. Unnamed courier left the crossing and took up courier work, determined to get words where they need to go, even when the sender is unknown. Now they carry the bounty offer in a waxed packet: someone wants a fragment of the buried core, and the reward is generous enough to trouble even a practiced messenger. The instructions forbid asking who the buyer is. Unnamed courier obeys the letter of that rule, though the packet's paper bears the faint smell of the same bitter resin used at the old ferry station. They send part of their earnings to Iven, who has since become a ferryman on the inland road, and avoid discussing the night of the accident. Their immediate problem is practical: the packet must be delivered before its seal is expected, and a stranger has begun following their route.
Role in the story
A wary messenger who introduces the bounty offer at the center of The Cold Whistle. Unnamed courier can deliver the job's terms and point the party toward the search, but cannot identify the buyer. Their personal history and the packet's curious scent give attentive characters reasons to question whether this is merely a straightforward bounty.
“One winter night, the bell rope froze stiff during a whiteout.”
