Wulger Marshstep
Wulger Marshstep
At the table
Voice
Wulger's voice has a dry, slightly rasped edge from years of calling over wind and marsh water. It carries without shouting and has a quick, decisive rhythm, like a hunter marking a route aloud. When he laughs, the sound is rough and surprisingly easy, though it can turn into a hard bark when he thinks someone is wasting time.
He speaks in a practical, quick cadence shaped by calling directions across reeds and wind. Words land cleanly, with clipped endings when he is organizing people. His jokes are dry and arrive half a beat late, as if he tested them for usefulness before letting them out.
Speech patterns
How to play them
Wulger respects competence and direct questions. Give him a concrete problem and he will offer a route, a tool, or a job before discussing feelings. He is warm toward children and shaken travelers, but challenges anyone who questions his methods in front of his hunters. He can be persuaded by evidence that protects both people and the marsh, especially if the other person accepts responsibility for the outcome.
Goal
Find a sustainable hunting ground beyond the threatened marsh and prove that his methods can protect the settlement without exhausting its lands.
Motivation
To make sure no hunter dies because a group hesitated, and to be remembered as the person who made the settlement capable of surviving.
Appearance
Wulger is a tall, pale-skinned hunter, sun-browned across his nose and shoulders. Near-black green scales overlap his temples, collarbones, and forearms, catching a slick, bottle-glass gleam when wet. His green serpent eyes fix on movement with unnerving precision, and his sharp teeth show whenever he smiles, which is often at the wrong moment. He waits with his weight pitched forward over the balls of his feet, as if the ground might suddenly become a trail worth following. He smells distinctly of crushed mint, damp leather, and the fish oil he rubs into his bowstring; he knows about the fish oil and insists it keeps insects away. The unexpected detail is that he carries a tiny wooden flute and plays it badly to calm frightened children.
Clothing
A weatherproofed reed-green cloak over a sleeveless hide vest, layered leggings, and marsh boots wrapped in strips of pale cloth to muffle their sound. Small bone tags mark each successful hunt, but he has stopped adding tags since the settlement began arguing over who deserves credit.
Body language
He leans toward whoever is speaking and plants his feet as if testing the ground for soft spots. When irritated, his jaw works visibly around his sharp teeth and his fingers tap out a quick, silent count against his thigh. He rarely sits with his back to an entrance.

Combat
AC 14 · HP 19 · 30 ft.Wulger prefers to begin hidden at range, choosing firm ground and using reeds or tree roots to limit approach routes. He targets a visible threat to draw danger away from less experienced allies. If enemies close, he uses his spear and Darkscale Guard to hold a narrow path while looking for an opening to disengage. He will not pursue into deep water without checking the current.

Background
Wulger was born into a Lightfoot family that hunted in shared parties, divided every carcass openly, and treated the marsh as a relative rather than a resource. As a young adult, he led a search for a missing patrol and found the hunters trapped by a sudden flood, their old trail-marking customs washed away. He got three people home by reading broken reeds, water stains, and animal flight paths, but his sister Efa drowned before he could reach her. Wulger emerged convinced that communal tradition had become an excuse for hesitation. He devised new rules: scouts claim a quarry, hunters train in specialized roles, and no one waits for a full council when danger is visible. The system made the settlement more productive and safer from predators, and made Wulger famous. It also turned shared hunts into contests for status. His aunt Neri, who taught him the old ways, publicly disputes him; his cousin Iolo helps enforce the new rules but quietly dislikes their harshness. Now game is thinning near the settlement, and Wulger is pushing hunts farther into a reed-choked reserve that the elders consider inviolate.
Role in the story
A celebrated local reformer whose useful innovations are straining old bonds. Wulger can be a capable guide, a stubborn ally, or an antagonist if the characters obstruct a dangerous hunt. His personal crisis offers a chance to confront whether survival requires changing tradition or recovering its communal purpose.
