At the table

Voice

Her voice has the dry, slightly rasped edge of someone used to shouting over iron gates and winter wind. Its pace is controlled and practical, with consonants struck cleanly so orders carry. When she is amused, the rasp loosens into a brief, warm laugh; when furious, she gets sharper and faster rather than quieter.

She uses clipped watch-command phrasing shaped by years of calling orders over clanging gates and crowds. She gives directions with concrete landmarks and distances, and rarely wastes words on rank when urgency matters. In private, her humor is dry and unexpectedly tender; grief makes her use the names of the dead instead of titles.

Speech patterns

Uses short, direct sentences for orders and gives a person's name before a warning.
Asks practical questions first: where, how many, and who is missing.
Uses dry understatement to defuse tension, especially among tired guards.
When discussing the dead, she stops using official terms and speaks of people by name.

How to play them

Saber begins formal and watchful, asking what the visitor needs and who else knows. She respects clear evidence, direct answers, and people who protect bystanders. Earn her trust by helping without grandstanding or by sharing verifiable information about the altered patrols. She will bargain for cooperation, but will not trade away public safety to preserve appearances.

Goal

Identify who is altering patrol routes, stop the smuggling operation, and keep the east quarter safe without sacrificing the trust of her watch.

Motivation

She wants the watch to be a shield for people who have no influence, not a polished instrument for the powerful. Duty matters to her, but the purpose behind the duty matters more.

Appearance

Saber Maegror is square-jawed and compactly powerful, with a pale, weathered complexion and a healed, rope-thin scar running from her left temple into her hairline, earned when a gate chain snapped during a riot. Her dark hair is cropped close at the sides and combed back with practical severity. She watches doorways before faces, tracking every entrance as if counting the beats before trouble arrives. Her stride is measured and quiet for someone in steel, each step placed as deliberately as a guard post. The unexpected detail is a tiny, carefully mended paper bird tucked into the uniform's inner breast pocket, its wings softened from years of handling.

Clothing

A sharply fitted black dress uniform with the silver Maegror crest at the breast, high collar, polished buttons, and a narrow red piping denoting command. Beneath it she wears a mail shirt and a practical leather belt. The uniform is immaculate from the front, but the cuffs are shiny from repeated repairs.

Body language

She stands where she can see both doors, shoulders squared, one hand never far from her sword hilt. Her gaze goes to hands, windows, and exits before settling on a face. At ease, she leans against a wall rather than sitting with her back exposed; in anger, she plants both boots and becomes more physically still.

Distinguishing features

A thin, healed scar from her left temple into her hairline, caused by a snapped gate chain.
Her eyes habitually map doors, windows, and hands before she addresses anyone.
A tiny paper bird, creased and carefully mended, stays tucked inside her uniform.

Personality

13 traits and drives

Saber is disciplined and attentive, yet impatient with ceremony that delays action. She is stern when frightened people need clear direction, but surprisingly gentle with exhausted recruits and grieving families. In a crisis she becomes brisk and decisive; after it passes, she replays every order in private and doubts whether she chose correctly. She values obedience as a way to coordinate protection, but will break a command that puts innocents in avoidable danger.

Alignment

Quirks

Counts doorways with tiny movements of her lips, then starts over if interrupted.
Folds any scrap of paper within reach into a bird, even official notices.
Tests a chair with one hand before sitting, as if checking whether it will hold a shield.
Keeps a pebble from each district she patrols in a shallow tin, sorted by shape rather than location.
When someone says "all clear," she asks, "Clear for whom?"

Habits

Checks the nearest exits whenever she enters a room, then deliberately gives the speaker her full attention.
Before a risky order, taps the guard of her sword twice with her thumb.
After a shift, oils her armor in the same order, even when exhausted.
When relaxed with trusted people, tells dry stories about terrible boots and worse marching songs.
When grief surfaces, folds scrap paper into birds without seeming to notice.

Traits · 4

Keeps her promises precisely, but will challenge any promise that asks her to abandon someone in danger.
Speaks bluntly in briefings, then listens carefully when the least senior guard reports a concern.
Protective toward frightened people, though she dislikes being thanked for doing what she considers her job.
Proud of her uniform and quietly embarrassed by how much she relies on its authority.

Flaws · 3

Takes responsibility for failures that belong to an entire chain of command.
Can treat a room like a tactical problem when someone needs comfort instead.
Her suspicion of unexplained orders risks making her seem insubordinate to allies who do not know what she has found.

Fears · 3

Giving an order that traps civilians in the way Pell was trapped.
Discovering that someone she trusts is deliberately endangering the east quarter.
Becoming so cautious that she mistakes hesitation for wisdom.

Wants and needs · 3

A trustworthy account of who changed the east-quarter patrol routes.
To protect civilians without turning the watch against itself.
To accept help without treating every ally as a potential liability.

Combat

AC 19 · HP 76 · 30 ft.

Saber holds a choke point or protects an ally who cannot easily retreat. She uses her shield to deny lanes, attacks twice with her longsword, and reserves Action Surge for a sudden breach or a decisive disarm. She calls for surrender when opponents are outmatched, but responds immediately to threats against civilians. If the ground turns against her, she falls back by covered steps rather than allowing herself to be surrounded.

A key ring for the north gate and watch barracks.

Background

Saber was raised above her mother's cramped boot-repair shop near the north gate of Bracken Ford. Her father, a watch sergeant, taught her to read a crowd by noticing who watched the exits. At seventeen she joined the city watch, eager to prove that discipline could protect ordinary people. During the riot at the grain weigh-house, a panicked crowd surged against a gate while her unit waited for orders. Saber disobeyed, opened a side passage, and got dozens out, but a snapped chain cut her temple and the crush killed her friend and fellow guard, Pell. The inquiry praised her initiative in private and censured her in public for breaking formation. Years later, Captain Drest put her in command because she remembered the dead as individuals, not numbers. She keeps Pell's folded paper bird, made by his young sister, and visits the sister, now a seamstress, whenever duty permits. Her current trouble is a series of unexplained patrol-route changes that leave the east quarter exposed; she suspects someone in the watch is clearing a path for smugglers, but accusing the wrong officer could fracture her command.

Role in the story

A formidable ally, principled obstacle, or investigator who can expose a conspiracy inside the city watch. Saber can give the party access and reliable leads, but will insist they avoid endangering civilians or provoking a panic.

“Her father, a watch sergeant, taught her to read a crowd by noticing who watched the exits.”
From their background
Faction
Captain of the Bracken Ford city watch, sworn to the Maegror crest and the safety of the city.

Known connections

Pell's younger sister, Runa, is a seamstress who still sends Saber mended uniform cuffs and never asks her to speak about the riot.
Captain Drest, the watch commander who promoted her, trusts her judgment but worries she is investigating too close to the watch's own ranks.
A junior guard named Hald is her most promising recruit and has begun copying her habit of counting exits.
The Maegror household appointed her captain and expects loyalty to the crest, though Saber believes the uniform serves the city before its patrons.
