The Opening

For six months, the Deepwell Corporation has bought failing mining camps for prices no sane company would pay. Now miners are vanishing, sealed shafts are humming beneath the earth, and the newest camp has sent one final message: “They found the heart.” Find out what Deepwell is excavating before the mountain opens from below.

Set the Scene

The party arrives at Ashencrag Mining Camp during a cold evening storm. The settlement is tense: miners refuse to enter the lower galleries, Deepwell guards patrol the main road, and every lantern near the sealed shaft burns with a faint blue flame. Mara Venn meets the party in an abandoned assay office and presents three clues: a falsified purchase ledger, a fragment of black mineral that whispers when warmed, and a map showing that several supposedly unrelated camps sit above one enormous underground pattern.

Mara Venn

Mara Venn approaches the party through a trusted local contact after hearing that they can investigate without immediately being bought, threatened, or dismissed by Deepwell's lawyers. She offers access to old survey records, a modest advance, and the names of miners willing to talk in secret.

Stakes

If Deepwell succeeds, it will gain control of an ancient intelligence capable of reshaping subterranean terrain and mineral deposits. The corporation could monopolize the region's resources, trigger catastrophic geological changes, or use the Lithic Choir to erase evidence and imprison opposition underground.

Ticking Clock·Deepwell's resonance engine will complete its awakening sequence in approximately three days. Each major delay advances the operation, strengthens the Choir's influence, and gives Deepwell time to remove witnesses and destroy records.

Background Lore

For decades, the frontier mining camps of the Ashencrag Range extracted iron, silver, and emberstone from deep veins beneath the mountains. Six months ago, the Deepwell Corporation began purchasing abandoned and struggling camps at prices far above their market value. The company has installed sealed elevators, strange pumping machinery, and private security, while refusing to explain its long-term plans. Workers, prospectors, and local officials suspect fraud, but no one has yet uncovered evidence strong enough to challenge the corporation.

What the World Knows

The Deepwell Corporation has purchased several failing mining camps across the Ashencrag Range, paying far more than the properties are worth. The company claims it is consolidating the region's mining industry, but workers report sealed shafts, missing crews, strange machinery, and unexplained tremors. The party must investigate the acquisitions, gather proof of Deepwell's true operation, and prevent the newest excavation from becoming a disaster.
