The Opening

The oldest prisoner in the empire has sent you a key made from black glass and a single request: reunite the thieves who once tried to rob the Emperor blind. In three days, the empire will gather every legendary treasure into one procession, and the King of Thieves believes this is your only chance to steal them all.

Set the Scene

The adventure opens beneath the oldest prison in the Auric Capital. Cassian Vale waits in a cell whose bars are made from nullifying metal, sitting beside a chessboard arranged with pieces carved in the likenesses of legendary thieves. He explains that the imperial Millennium Procession begins in seventy-two hours and that the treasures will never again be gathered in one place. Cassian can provide the first lead, but he refuses to reveal the full plan until the party proves that they are not merely mercenaries. He asks them to steal his prison ledger from the warden's private archive, not because he needs the information, but because the ledger contains the last known locations of the Gilded Hand.

Questgiver

Cassian Vale, the King of Thieves

The questgiver approaches the party through a sequence of impossible thefts. First, a black-glass key appears inside a sealed room the characters occupy. Then a prison guard delivers a message written in invisible ink that becomes readable only when held over a flame. Finally, a cell door opens for exactly one minute, revealing Cassian waiting inside and inviting the party to sit for a game of chess.

Stakes

If the party fails, Severin gains control of the imperial treasures and the Crown of Compliance, then uses them to create a magically enforced empire. The surviving Gilded Hand members are publicly blamed and hunted. If the party succeeds but mishandles the aftermath, the capital may fall into civil war, neighboring powers may invade, and the stolen relics may cause disasters wherever they are taken.

Ticking Clock·Seventy-two hours remain before the Millennium Procession begins. After the procession starts, the party has approximately six hours before the treasures are sealed in the Celestial Vault and the imperial lockdown becomes permanent.

Background Lore

For three centuries, the Auric Empire has displayed its greatest treasures inside the Celestial Vault, a palace-sized treasury suspended beneath the imperial capital. The vault contains conquered crowns, sainted relics, dragon-forged weapons, planar gemstones, and the Emperor's personal hoard. Twenty-five years ago, the legendary thief known as the King of Thieves nearly stole the entire collection with a crew called the Gilded Hand. The attempt failed when one member betrayed the others, leaving the King imprisoned, presumed dead, and the surviving crew scattered across the empire. Now the Emperor is preparing the Millennium Procession, during which every treasure will be moved into a single ceremonial convoy before being displayed to the world.

What the World Knows

The King of Thieves once led the most successful criminal crew in imperial history. Their legendary attempt to rob the Celestial Vault failed, and the crew disappeared into prisons, monasteries, battlefields, and respectable society. Now the King has one final plan: reunite his old gang and steal the Emperor's treasures during the Millennium Procession. The characters must earn the crew's trust, infiltrate the capital, defeat the vault's impossible defenses, and decide what becomes of the empire's stolen wealth.
