The Opening

Three River Guild boats have vanished on the same stretch of water, and grain prices are rising in every town along the bank. The Guild offers a reward for anyone who can recover its stolen cargo ledger before a rival faction uses it to start a trade war. Your first clue waits at a dock where the river is flowing uphill.

Set the Scene

The adventure opens at Highwater Wharf during a hard gray rain. Bargemen have gathered around an empty mooring where a Guild cargo boat should be tied, while a blue-and-silver river marker stands in the mud several yards from the water. Marra Venn approaches the party with a locked document tube and explains that the missing cargo matters less than what was taken with it: the Guild's master ledger. Before she can say more, a dock bell rings from beneath the river.

Marra Venn

Marra Venn meets the party beneath the awning of a closed warehouse at Highwater Wharf. She is direct, exhausted, and willing to offer both Guild protection and a substantial reward, but she avoids answering questions about the ledger's older entries until the party earns her trust.

Stakes

If the party fails, Caldus Rake gains control of the hidden waterway, food shipments are redirected, and the River Guild loses authority over the region. If the party succeeds without addressing the Guild's corruption, the immediate crisis ends but a deeper faction conflict begins.

Ticking Clock·The next major river surge arrives at sunset on the following day. Caldus Rake intends to open the final lock during the surge, after which the hidden channel will become impossible to seal without flooding Highwater Wharf.

Background Lore

The River Guild controls ferries, barges, warehouses, and most legal trade along the Graywater. For generations, its sealed ledgers have recorded every cargo that passes through the region. Recently, several boats vanished after carrying ordinary grain shipments, and the Guild's river markers began appearing in places no surveyor had charted. The disappearances have disrupted food prices and awakened old suspicions about what truly travels beneath the Guild's blue-and-silver pennants.

What the World Knows

The River Guild has hired the party to investigate the disappearance of three cargo boats and recover a stolen master ledger. The Guild believes the ledger was taken by smugglers who want to manipulate food prices and turn the river settlements against one another. The party must follow impossible river markers, question frightened witnesses, and explore a submerged lockhouse before the evidence is destroyed.
