The Last Route

A dead navigator knows the way home. The living must decide whether to follow it.

Read aloud

Mara Venn holds out a small, dark shard that glimmers like water at night. "A dead navigator's memory can guide you through Ferryfall's drowned routes," she says, "if you carry it to the shard where she died. Bring it there, and I will give you the memory. But once you take it, the route will remember you too."

The hook

Set the scene

At Mara's lantern-lit workshop, rain taps against a roof patched with ferry sailcloth. The spirit-worker offers the party a dark shard wrapped in blue thread and explains that it holds the memory of Ilyra Senn, a navigator who died on a drowned route. Mara will entrust the memory to the party if they promise to carry it to the shard where Ilyra died. Edda Rusk waits nearby, listening closely; she needs that route to remain open, while Mara insists the dead deserve to be released.

How Mara Venn asks

Mara approaches the party through a trusted ferry captain or invites them to her workshop after hearing they can be discreet.

Rumours

Roll a rumour

1“Some say Ilyra's ferry never struck anything. It turned sharply into the channel just before the flood surge passed.”
2“The route's marker bells sometimes ring on windless nights, though no ferries are moving.”
3“Tovan has been asking old navigators for directions to the wreck, but refuses to say why.”
4“Mara has returned other memories to their death-shards, and none of those spirits spoke as clearly as Ilyra.”

    1. A Bargain for a Memory

Mara's spirit-workshop on the bank above the ferry docks.

Mara offers the memory and explains the bargain. Edda's presence introduces the cost to the living, while the memory gives its bearer an incomplete glimpse of a bell, a ferry deck, and rushing water.

NextOnce the party accepts, Edda arranges passage toward the last known route and warns them that Tovan's route-keepers may try to stop them.

    2. The Water's False Directions

A flooded run of ferry channels marked by leaning lantern poles, reed beds, and bells beneath the water.

The party navigates a stretch where the usual landmarks are submerged or displaced. They can rely on Ilyra's fragments, interview local boaters, or test the current. Complications can make their chosen method costly without making progress impossible.

NextThe route narrows toward a wrecked ferry where Ilyra's memory becomes more vivid.

    3. The Wreck's Welcome

A half-submerged ferry snagged in a channel of broken pilings and current-torn cables.

The party confronts the wreck's restless guardians. They can fight, retreat, or use respect and Ilyra's name to reach the far side. On the wreck, they find evidence that the ferry turned deliberately rather than drifting off course.

    The Wreck's Welcome

NextA recovered marker or Ilyra's clearer memory points to the cable crossing and the death-shard beyond it.

    4. Who Keeps the Route?

A crowded cable ferry over a fast channel, with Edda's crew on one landing and Tovan's route-keepers on the other.

Tovan demands a chance to hear the route before the party takes the memory to the shard. He argues that the route could save his community, while Edda warns that keeping it open may repeat the danger that killed Ilyra. The party can bargain, share a fragment, refuse, or force a passage.

    The Cable Crossing

NextWhatever the outcome, the crossing leads to the shard site, where the party must decide what to do with the memory.

    5. The Last Route

A quiet basin around a dark navigation shard, with the remains of Ilyra's ferry beneath clear, still water.

At the death-shard, Ilyra's memory becomes whole enough to reveal her deliberate sacrifice. The party must choose between releasing her, keeping her bound to preserve the route, or finding a compromise that makes the living responsible for its maintenance.

NextThe route changes according to the party's decision; conclude with the settlement's response and leave one consequence unresolved for a future adventure.

Behind it

What people believe

Navigator Ilyra Senn died while guiding a ferry through a dangerous channel in Ferryfall.

Background

In Ferryfall, roads cross drowned valleys on rope ferries, drifting platforms, and routes marked by lanterns.

The stakes

If the memory is returned, Ilyra can be released, but the current route may close and endanger the settlement's supply line.

Encounters

2
  • The Wreck's Welcome

    Combat or negotiation

A half-submerged ferry caught among black pilings, loose cables, and floating debris. Narrow planks shift with the current, and deep water separates the wreck from the bank.

    Foes

    • Drowned ferry guards

    • A current-warped rope warden

ComplicationThe drowned ferry guards are remnants of the wreck that killed Ilyra. They react to the memory as if it were a living passenger. The party may fight, calm them by speaking Ilyra's name, or retreat and find another approach.

ScalingFor a smaller or less combat-focused party, use only the guards and let them be driven off by a clear show of respect. For a larger or more capable party, add the rope warden and make the wreck's shifting deck an active hazard.

  • The Cable Crossing

    Social or combat

A narrow cable ferry over a fast, debris-filled channel. The landing platforms are crowded, the guide cable is frayed, and there is little room to maneuver.

    Foes

    • Tovan Pell

    • Route-keepers

ComplicationThe crossing is contested by Tovan's people. They do not initially attack, but will attempt to seize the memory if negotiations fail. Falling water, a damaged cable, and the party's choice about sharing the route can change the scene's stakes.

ScalingFor a peaceful table, resolve this as a tense social challenge with no weapons drawn. If the party threatens Tovan or refuses all discussion, use a brief skirmish with a few route-keepers. Increase the danger through environmental hazards rather than adding many opponents.

  • Mara Venn

    QuestgiverQuestgiver, spirit-worker

WantsMara wants the navigator's memory returned to its place of death before the spirit loses its identity. She believes the memory can be carried safely, but has not told the party how strongly it can affect a bearer.

“I can give you the route. I cannot promise it will leave you unchanged.”
  • Edda Rusk

    Ally, ferry captain

WantsEdda wants to preserve the ferry route that keeps her settlement supplied. She fears that returning the memory will close the route and leave her people isolated.

“The channel is not a line on a map. It is a promise we keep to one another.”
  • Tovan Pell

    Antagonist, desperate route-keeper

WantsTovan hopes to use the navigator's memory to open a safer channel for his stranded community. He is willing to bargain, steal, or risk the memory's destruction if he thinks the party will abandon the living.

“That voice knows the way home. Let me hear it once, and I can save everyone here.”
  • Ilyra Senn

    Witness, dead navigator's echo

WantsThe dead navigator, Ilyra Senn, wants to reach the shard where she died and regain a sense of herself. Fragments of her memory also contain a route that could help the living.

“I remember a bell, and water where the stars should have been. I do not remember whose hand held mine.”

How it ends

Rewards

Experience: Award experience or equivalent advancement for completing the journey, resolving the central dilemma, and accepting the consequences of the chosen solution.
Gold: A modest purse from Mara for travel expenses, plus a negotiated payment or supplies from the ferry community if the route is preserved.
In the story: The party earns a lasting connection to Ferryfall's ferries and spirit-workers. Their decision becomes a local story about whether a dangerous route should be kept open and who should bear its cost.
Standing: Respect from Mara's spirit-workers if the memory is returned with care; gratitude from Edda's ferry community if the party helps secure a sustainable route. Tovan's people may become allies if included in the solution.

Items

  • A lantern marked with Ilyra's old navigation sign, useful as a local token of trust

  • A length of blue spirit-thread that can identify the bearer as someone who has completed a return journey

On a win

The party reaches the death-shard and makes a meaningful choice about Ilyra's memory.

What it leaves open

If the party preserves the route, the settlement asks them to help maintain its marker system before the next flood season.
If Tovan acquires a fragment, he may use it to chart an untested channel, drawing the party into a dangerous expedition.
Ilyra's memory may have recognized another name or landmark at the shard, hinting that a second navigator's spirit is still bound elsewhere in Ferryfall.
The choices made here may alter the relationship between Edda's ferry community and Mara's spirit-workers.

If it fails

The party cannot reach the shard before the current route closes or the memory becomes too unstable to guide them.
The memory remains bound to its bearer and grows less coherent. The party can still seek another spirit-worker or return to the shard later, but Ilyra may lose more of her identity.
The party returns the memory without making any arrangement with the ferry community, or the route is damaged during the journey.
Edda's settlement loses access to the route for a season, forcing it to ration supplies and depend on a longer, riskier crossing.
The party loses control of the memory during the confrontation at the cable crossing.
Tovan takes a fragment of the memory. He may open a new channel, but Ilyra's recollection of her final hours becomes incomplete and the dead navigator may resent the party.

Complications (d6)

  1. 1A submerged marker bell rings from the wrong direction. Unless the party checks the current or finds a second landmark, the ferry drifts into a reed-choked side channel.
  2. 2The memory speaks through its bearer, reciting a private farewell in Ilyra's voice. A nearby traveler recognizes the name and demands to know what the party is carrying.
  3. 3A ferry cable snaps under strain. The party must secure the vessel, abandon cargo, or accept a dangerous crossing delay.
  4. 4Tovan's scouts offer a trade: the party can have an undisturbed passage if they let Tovan hear one fragment of Ilyra's route.
  5. 5A sudden surge floods the low deck. One carried item or piece of equipment is swept overboard unless someone secures it immediately.
  6. 6Ilyra's memory briefly overwhelms its bearer with the sensation of drowning. The bearer can keep moving, but must accept help from an ally or risk becoming separated from the group.
