The Opening

You were each promised a room, a meal, and honest work, though none of you were told why the noble House Valdemar needed strangers gathered under one roof. Before your employer arrives, two exhausted household workers whisper in the corridor that an archivist vanished after asking questions about a stolen crate, an old road, and a man who came home remembering someone else's childhood.

Set the Scene

The player characters begin as strangers housed in a modest Valdemar guesthouse near the Keystone District. Each has been given a separate room, a sealed letter of employment, and instructions to meet in the common room at dusk. Before Lady Meriel arrives, they may overhear two workers arguing about Elian Voss, a missing archivist who supposedly left with a brass case marked by three concentric squares. The workers mention that Elian had recently visited the docks, the city archives, and an old shrine outside the North Gate. The scene gives the characters time to introduce themselves, compare why they accepted the commission, and inspect the guesthouse. A successful Recall Knowledge check identifies the three-square mark as a style used by old surveyors and record keepers, while successful Stealth or Society checks reveal that one worker is repeating a story supplied by someone else. The worker carries a scrap of paper showing a partial sequence of symbols that later helps solve the dungeon puzzle.

Lady Meriel Valdemar

The party is hired as independent investigators and housed together in a Valdemar guesthouse before meeting Lady Meriel. House Scarnetti approaches them after the first major breakthrough with a competing offer: more gold in exchange for illegal surveillance, theft of Valdemar documents, and delivery of any recovered artifact. The party may choose either side, remain independent, or play both houses against each other.

Rumours

d6 · table
  1. 01
Elian Voss was seen buying a map from a dockside cartographer, but he paid with a coin that had no current ruler's face.
  2. 02
A Valdemar worker claims Elian kept asking whether memories could be copied without a person noticing.
  3. 03
A Scarnetti courier was seen near the archives on the same night Elian vanished.
  4. 04
An old road north of Magnimar ends at a building that locals call the Empty Workshop, although no one remembers what it was built to repair.
  5. 05
A witness insists that Elian returned to the city twice after he disappeared, but each time he spoke with a different voice.
  6. 06
The three-square symbol appears on old stones, shipping crates, and one locked drawer in the Valdemar archives.
Stakes

If the party fails, the relic may be controlled by House Scarnetti, Orren may become a permanent vessel for stolen memories, and House Valdemar may lose the political struggle. If the party succeeds, Elian survives, the relic is secured or hidden, and the characters gain influence in Magnimar while uncovering a wider network of ordinary buildings built over Thassilonian facilities.

Ticking Clock·House Scarnetti is moving its agents toward the rural ruins. Each full day the party delays after discovering the route, Orren's corruption worsens, Elian loses another important memory, and the final encounter gains one additional environmental hazard.

Background Lore

Magnimar was built atop older stone, and beneath its streets lie fragments of Thassilonian infrastructure repurposed by later peoples. House Valdemar maintains a lawful shipping and civic network, while House Scarnetti controls private security, smuggling routes, and several influential businesses. Both houses have learned that an apparently minor missing-person case may expose a forgotten Thassilonian device hidden in a rural waystation outside the city.

What the World Knows

Lady Meriel Valdemar hires the party to locate Elian Voss, an archivist who disappeared while investigating irregularities in House Valdemar's shipping records. His trail leads through Magnimar's docks, archives, and rival noble interests before pointing toward an abandoned building outside the city. The case may involve stolen records, a dangerous political rivalry, and an old relic connected to the strange symbols Elian left behind.
