The hook
Set the scene
Aurelya receives the party in a quiet conservatory, where a place setting has been kept untouched since Nereida's funeral. She lays out the death notice, a list of household staff, and a letter in which her mother abruptly stops writing about the orchard dispute. Aurelya asks the party to investigate discreetly before Thalric can close the family archive.
How Aurelya asks
Aurelya requests a private meeting through a trusted household messenger.
She offers a modest retainer and access to the family grounds, but asks the party not to accuse anyone until they have evidence.

The Amakiir residence, in a conservatory overlooking the ancestral orchard.
Aurelya gives the party the official account, names of potential witnesses, and permission to visit the grounds. Thalric's courteous reception makes clear that the family expects restraint.
NextAurelya directs the party to the staff quarters and the estate's public records, where they can begin comparing accounts of Nereida's final months.

2. The Unfinished Account
The residence's records room, servants' corridor, and a secluded garden walk.
The party compares household schedules, death records, and the recollections of servants. Lethiel initially withholds information, but a respectful approach or proof that the party can keep a confidence earns a private meeting.
NextLethiel mentions a missing cup and a late-night visit to the glasshouse, directing the party toward the orchard's old growing rooms.

5. What the Family Will Hear
The conservatory where Aurelya first hired the party.
Aurelya hears the party's findings and weighs the strength of the case against the risks of public accusation. The party can recommend a course, protect witnesses, or let the family decide.
NextThe immediate investigation ends with the household's response, while the orchard dispute and the fate of the family records leave room for further adventures.
Behind it
What people believe
Nereida Amakiir, a prominent elven noble and Aurelya's mother, died after a short illness.
Since then, rumors have circulated that her decline began long before her final days and that her recent conflict with patriarch Thalric may be relevant. Aurelya has hired the party to investigate the household, question witnesses, and determine whether the rumors have a factual basis.
Background
Nereida Ferelith Xerifa Amakiir was a celebrated noble, patron of elven gardens, and keeper of several household treaties.
In the months before her death, she clashed with Thalric, the current patriarch, over the transfer of an ancestral orchard and the household's increasingly secretive dealings. Her death was attributed to a sudden illness. Servants later whispered that she had been poisoned slowly, but no surviving report proves it.
The stakes
If the party fails, the evidence may disappear, the witnesses may be silenced or discredited, and the orchard may be sold under Thalric's control.
If they succeed, they can expose a powerful noble, but doing so may divide the Amakiir household and place witnesses at risk.
Encounters
2The Glasshouse Ambush
Combat
A long, humid glasshouse with narrow paths, waist-high planting beds, broken panes, and hanging trellises. The beds provide cover, while shattered glass and wet flagstones make rushing across the floor hazardous.
Foes
Amakiir household sentries
Glasshouse vine-blight
ComplicationThe glasshouse is unstable. At the start of each round, a creature that moved through a marked bed risks triggering a collapsing trellis or a burst of thorned vines. Use a simple Reflex save or equivalent check to avoid damage or becoming briefly entangled.
ScalingFor a smaller or less combat-focused party, use fewer sentries and have the vine-blight retreat when badly injured. For a stronger party, add a sentry and let the vine-blight use the crowded beds to restrain targets. Treat the vine-blight as a custom creature or reskin an appropriate plant creature for the party's level.
The Sealed Archive
Mixed
A compact records room lined with tall shelves. Narrow aisles limit movement, a desk offers cover, and a concealed panel contains correspondence about the orchard.
Foes
Thalric's archive ward
Amakiir household sentries
ComplicationThe archive's ward reacts to opened drawers by filling the room with pale light and sound. Each round, the party must either suppress the ward, finish searching quickly, or risk alerting the household guards.
ScalingThis can be resolved as a social or skill challenge instead of combat. For combat, use a small number of level-appropriate guards and treat the ward as a custom hazard. For a stronger party, the ward also seals one exit until disabled.

4Aurelya
QuestgiverQuestgiver and grieving daughter
WantsWants the truth about her mother's death, but fears that exposing the killer could fracture the household and endanger people still living there.
“My mother knew how to make a room listen. Find out who made her last days so quiet.”
Thalric Amakiir
Patriarch and person of interest
WantsWants to protect the Amakiir name and preserve his control of the household. He may be guilty of concealment, but wants any inquiry limited to the past.
“Grief is not evidence, and rumor is not a verdict. Bring me something that can withstand both.”
Lethiel Vaen
Former attendant and witness
WantsWants to confess what she knows without becoming the household's next target. She has preserved evidence but is afraid to reveal how she obtained it.
“I kept the cups, the letters, and the silence. I cannot keep all three any longer.”
Syraniel Mosswhisper
Household herbalist and wildcard
WantsWants the ancestral orchard kept from being sold or paved over, and knows its plants were used to prepare a custom poison.
“The orchard remembers every hand that pruned it. People are less honest.”
How it ends
Rewards
Items
Aurelya provides a modest healing kit or equivalent system-appropriate medical supplies.
The surviving residue sample can be kept as evidence, but is dangerous to handle without proper containment.
On a win
The party identifies the custom toxin and assembles enough testimony or documentary evidence to make a credible case about how it was used and who concealed it.
Aurelya can decide whether to expose Thalric publicly, pursue a private confession, or use the evidence to protect the orchard and its workers. A complete success establishes Thalric's role; a partial success confirms poisoning but leaves the order difficult to prove.
What it leaves open
If it fails
- The party cannot secure admissible evidence from the household records.
- Thalric has the party removed from the estate and publicly accuses them of slander. Aurelya can still help, but further investigation must happen outside the household and the family becomes less willing to cooperate.
- The party alienates or frightens Lethiel during questioning.
- Lethiel flees before giving her full account. The party loses her testimony, and Thalric can claim the remaining clues are circumstantial.
- The party allows the archive ward or a household agent to destroy the samples and letters.
- The evidence is destroyed or compromised. The party may still identify the likely method and motive, but cannot safely establish responsibility in public.
Complications (d6)
- 1A household servant recognizes the investigators and alerts Thalric. He moves the remaining medical records to a locked family archive before the party can examine them.
- 2Lethiel panics when questioned in public and denies knowing Nereida. She will speak only if the party arranges a private meeting away from household staff.
- 3A rainstorm washes away fresh tracks in the orchard, but exposes a recently disturbed root cellar beneath the old glasshouse.
- 4A rival household envoy arrives to negotiate the orchard's sale. Thalric insists the investigation pause until the meeting is over.
- 5A household guard mistakes the party for thieves and demands they surrender their evidence. The guard is loyal, not corrupt, and can be persuaded to stand down.
- 6Syraniel's carefully labeled herb samples are swapped for harmless lookalikes. A successful comparison with the original residue can still identify the missing ingredient.
