The Heart Beneath the Briars
The Heart Beneath the Briars
Read aloud
The trees at the edge of the Blighted Grove are weeping black sap, and the dead are gathering beneath their branches. Arch Druid Niach says the grove's heart is still holding, but it will not endure another night without help. He asks you to stand between it and the southern Fane.

Cheat sheet
Objectives
- 1Break through the blighted outer defenses.
- 2Find the cause of the grove's failing ward.
- 3Defend the Verdant Heart until the blight is driven back.
- 4Learn how the southern Fane is reaching the grove.Optional
The clock
Each major delay or failed attempt to cross a dangerous obstacle lets the blight advance. After three significant delays, the final chamber gains one additional hazard pulse or one extra minion. Make this escalation visible through black sap rising in the roots and the ward's light fading.

The hook
Set the scene
Niach meets the party at the grove's boundary beneath a dead ash tree. Black sap drips from its bark into a ring of white protective ash. He explains that the ward will fail if the blight reaches the Verdant Heart, then gives the party a pouch of ash and points out Tavi, who knows the paths that still hold.
How Arch Druid Niach asks
Niach approaches the party at the grove's boundary, speaks plainly about the danger, and offers what aid he can spare without weakening the ward further.

Behind it
What people believe
The southern Fane's necromantic influence is spreading into the Blighted Grove.
Arch Druid Niach asks the party to reach the grove's heart, hold back the encroaching dead, and restore the failing ward before the grove falls.
Background
The Blighted Grove was once a living ward between the settled valleys and the southern Fane, a ruined shrine where necromantic rites have stirred again.
Its heartwood, an ancient seed-stone known as the Verdant Heart, anchors the grove's protective magic. Arch Druid Niach believes the grove can still hold if the party keeps the dead away long enough to cleanse its heart.
The stakes
If the party fails, necromantic energy overtakes the grove, its ward collapses, and the blight begins spreading toward nearby settlements.
Even success may demand a hard choice about whether to preserve the grove as it is or accept a lasting alteration to its magic.
Encounters
3The Briar Threshold
Combat
A narrow trail bordered by waist-high thorn hedges, slick roots, and shallow pools of black water. The hedges provide cover but can be forced through at a cost in time.
Foes
2 Blightbound Sentinels, custom plant-and-undead guardians
1 Root-Tethered Shade, custom incorporeal-style haunt
ComplicationThe first time the party disturbs the roots, the thorn wall shifts and divides the battlefield. Characters can spend an action or equivalent effort to force a gap or move around the root mass.
ScalingFor a smaller or less experienced party, remove one Sentinel. For a larger or more capable party, add one Sentinel or increase the Shade's resilience. Use suitable level-appropriate Pathfinder statistics, or treat these as custom creatures.
The Rootwell
Combat
A sunken clearing around a cracked stone well. Exposed roots make movement uneven, while three standing stones provide shelter from the blight pulse.
Foes
1 Gravebloom Stag, custom blighted beast
2 Fane-Touched Dead, custom undead skirmishers
ComplicationAt the end of each round, a pulse of blight crosses the chamber. Characters behind the standing stones are sheltered; others must contend with the pulse using an appropriate defense or take a modest, level-appropriate amount of damage and suffer a brief hindrance.
ScalingFor a smaller or less experienced party, use one Fane-Touched Dead. For a larger or more capable party, add one and let the stag call a single additional minion after the first pulse. Use suitable level-appropriate Pathfinder statistics, or treat these as custom creatures.
The Heart's Last Stand
Combat or social confrontation
The heart chamber is a circular hollow beneath the oldest tree. Raised roots form narrow lanes, and the Verdant Heart hangs above a pool of dark sap. A character can spend time or actions severing a blight conduit to reduce the chamber's hazards.
Foes
Eldra Voss, custom druidic antagonist using level-appropriate Pathfinder statistics
2 Root-Woken Husks, custom undead brutes
ComplicationIf the party attacks Eldra before hearing her out, the Verdant Heart's roots constrict around the nearest living creature, forcing the party to choose between continuing the fight and freeing that character.
ScalingIf the party negotiated with Eldra or disabled the heart's blight conduits, remove one Husk. If the party arrives depleted or has drawn out the defense, Eldra begins with a defensive ward rather than adding foes. Keep all statistics suitable for a hard encounter for a level 4 party.

How it ends
Rewards
Items
A bundle of warding ash, a custom single-use aid that can help protect a small area from minor necromantic influence.
A carved heartwood token recognized by Niach's wardens as a sign of trusted service.
On a win
The party holds the heart long enough to cut, cleanse, or redirect the blight conduits.
The dead retreat from the grove, and the Verdant Heart steadies. Niach thanks the party, though the exact cost depends on their choices: Eldra may be reconciled, imprisoned, or lost, and the heart may bear lasting scars.
What it leaves open
If it fails
- The party leaves the Verdant Heart exposed, is forced to retreat, or fails to stop the final assault before the heart is overwhelmed.
- The grove's outer ward breaks. Blighted growth spreads to nearby farmland, creating a new regional threat and making future travel through the area dangerous.
- The party accepts Eldra's bargain without securing Niach's agreement or fails to prevent her from redirecting the heart's power.
- The grove survives but becomes a harsher, unstable ward. Niach loses standing with nearby settlements, and the party may be asked to repair the damage in a later adventure.
- The party wins the immediate battle but leaves the blight conduits active or abandons evidence that could identify the Fane's next move.
- The dead withdraw for now, but the southern Fane learns the party's methods and begins preparing a stronger incursion.
Complications (d6)
- 1A root bridge collapses under the party's weight, separating one or more characters from the group until they find a safe crossing or climb back up.
- 2A gust scatters Niach's protective ash across the trail. The party must recover it before the next combat or face one additional blighted creature in that encounter.
- 3A wounded grove-keeper mistakes the party for Fane agents and raises an alarm, drawing nearby undead toward the party's position.
- 4A patch of thorn-vines lashes out when someone crosses it. The marked character loses time freeing themself, giving the blight more time to reach the heart.
- 5Miren recognizes a voice among the dead as her brother's. She rushes toward it unless the party stops her or gives her a reason to stay.
- 6A surge from the southern Fane extinguishes ordinary flames and makes the next attempt to use fire for light or signaling unreliable.
