Session 5: Runes of the Mountain Forge

A lost shard beats beneath Mount Karghal, and the mountain is listening.

Read aloud

Deepstone Mine breathes warm, mineral-tasting air into the cold night, while a steady tapping answers from somewhere far below. The trapped miners have been signaling for six hours, and now ancient stone guardians stalk the broken galleries. Runemaster Brundin Axebringer asks you to reach the crew, find the source of the tremor, and bring back whatever has begun to wake beneath Mount Karghal.

The hook

Set the scene

At Anvilheart Citadel, Brundin Axebringer gives the party a formal briefing on behalf of Forgemaster Brynna Kettlestone and the Forgeward Guilds. A leyline tremor has collapsed Deepstone Mine and awakened its stone guardians. Brundin explains that a Nova's Heart shard is lodged in an ancient soul-anchor crystal below, and that the pulse has begun waking something sealed by the original dwarven builders. He asks the party to rescue the trapped miners and recover the shard. Before they depart, Vela's coworkers and Hadrik Forgeward argue over the future of the vein: traditional miners want access to raw, unstable mineral mana, while industrial foremen want controlled, efficient extraction. The decision is theirs, but the consequences will reach beyond the mine.

How Brundin Axebringer asks

Brundin Axebringer formally briefs the party at Anvilheart Citadel on behalf of Forgemaster Brynna Kettlestone and the Forgeward Guilds.

Rumours

Roll a rumour

1“The deepest mine galleries were sealed before the Kharbal clans united, and the old maps show a chamber no modern crew has entered.”
2“The mine's tapping has continued without pause, but some miners swear that a second rhythm answers from farther down.”
3“The Forgeward Guilds are split: some say raw mineral mana is the Holdfasts' birthright, while others fear another unstable vein could cripple the forges.”
4“Brundin's rival, Bellundra Sootvalor, has been asking unusually precise questions about the original rune lines.”
5“A tribunal-style mark was seen near the mine entrance before the collapse, though no one can say who left it.”

    1. The Holdfasts' Demand

Anvilheart Citadel, where forge smoke stings the eyes and hammer blows roll through the floor.

At Anvilheart Citadel, Brundin delivers the formal briefing while traditional miners and industrial foremen argue over the mine's future. Let the party hear both cases and choose whom to support, or refuse to choose. Brundin supplies a rough mine map and basic rescue gear. His last warning follows them out: the old rune binding must not be treated like an ordinary crystal seam.

NextThe argument follows the party down to the mine road, where warm, mineral-scented air spills through the dark entrance and the distant tapping keeps time with their footsteps.

    2. The Mountain's First Answer

M1, the Mine Entrance, with loose scree, cracked timber, and ore carts tilted at dangerous angles.

The party enters past broken scaffolding and watches the supports sway in the mine's warm draft. Handle the hazard with the Dexterity save described in the area key. They can spot a tribunal-style judgment sigil near the entrance with a successful Investigation or relevant lore check. A stone guardian stirs as the party approaches the first shattered gallery.

    The Scaffolds Stir

NextWhen the guardian falls or is bypassed, its stone fingers scrape a trail toward the collapsed gallery, where a steady rescue rhythm knocks through the rubble.

    3. Three Knocks, Then Silence

M2, the Collapsed Gallery, where dust coats the tongue and faint hammer taps echo from behind a wall of ore and timber.

The miners answer questions through gaps in the rubble. The party must clear the gallery with three successes before two failures on Athletics checks, or devise a different rescue plan. Once freed, Vela Sootvein explains that the corrupted guardian and runes stirred the moment the shard's pulse reached the old lines. She can also tell whether the crew has all been found, and urges the party to keep the raw vein from being sealed without hearing the miners' case.

    The Trapped Crew

NextVela points out a narrow service passage. As the crew climbs toward daylight, a pulse travels through the rock below and turns every carved line a cold, pale blue.

    4. Judgment in the Lower Galleries

A narrow lower gallery where the old dwarven reliefs are smooth with age and the air tastes sharply of iron.

Explore the lower gallery and its rune reliefs. The party finds judgment sigils repeated in the stone, along with marks showing someone followed the shard's signal. Bellundra, if present or encountered here, admits she suspected an older binding and arranged for the party to handle the recovery before the council had to disclose it. Allow investigation, Arcana, History, or careful experimentation to reveal that the reliefs are part of a binding rather than decoration.

NextThe reliefs converge on a seam of glowing crystal; as the party nears it, a deep vibration gathers underfoot and the Stone Warden pulls itself upright.

    5. The Echo Beneath the Forge

M3, the Soul-Anchor Vein, a cavern of black stone and bright crystal where the runes hum like a struck anvil.

The corrupted Stone Warden attacks beside the soul-anchor crystal. At half its maximum hit points, the rune network flares and the Warden clears one condition affecting it. The Titan Echo speaks through the chamber and tests the party as possible hosts, asking whether they would bind, reshape, or release power that was never meant to be owned. After the confrontation, a Arcana check safely extracts Kethrum's Shard. On a failure, the acting character takes force damage as the vein destabilizes. End with the party choosing what to do about the surviving rune binding and the mine's future.

    The Soul-Anchor Vein

NextAs the shard leaves the crystal, the pulse changes pitch. The mountain's answering rhythm continues below the party as they carry the shard toward daylight.

Behind it

What people believe

A leyline tremor has collapsed Deepstone Mine beneath Mount Karghal, trapping a mining crew and stirring ancient stone guardians.

Background

Deepstone Mine follows an older vein beneath Mount Karghal, where the first dwarven builders carved runes into the bedrock to contain a force they could not destroy.

The stakes

If the crew is not rescued, the Kharbal Holdfasts suffer deaths, injuries, and lost production, followed by higher tribute demands and metal-crafting surcharges.

Encounters

3
  • The Scaffolds Stir

    Combat

The mine entrance, with narrow scaffolds, loose scree, and warm air carrying a bitter mineral taste.

    Foes

    • 2 to 4 awakened stone guardians, use suitable low-level construct statistics or custom equivalents

ComplicationUnstable scaffolding shifts during the confrontation. At the start of each round, one exposed creature near the entrance must succeed on a DC 13 Dexterity save or fall prone and take 1d6 bludgeoning damage.

ScalingFor a smaller or less experienced party, use two guardians and let the scaffolding hazard trigger only once. For a larger party, add a guardian or have one guardian arrive after the first round.

  • The Trapped Crew

    Skill

A crushed gallery of broken ore carts, fractured pillars, and tight gaps. The miners tap a steady rescue rhythm from beyond the rubble.

ComplicationThe collapsed gallery requires three successes before two failures on DC 14 Athletics checks to clear the rubble. On a failure, the party loses time, a support beam shifts, and one trapped miner is injured. Clever bracing, leverage, magic, or coordinated labor can grant advantage or count as an additional success at the GM's discretion.

ScalingUse a lower DC of 12 if the party is depleted or has little physical support. Raise it to 15 if the party has made noise, delayed, or is working in a fresh aftershock.

  • The Soul-Anchor Vein

    Combat

A crystal-veined chamber crossed by ancient rune reliefs. The soul-anchor crystal hums with pressure that can be felt in the teeth.

    Foes

    • Corrupted Stone Warden, custom guardian using an appropriate construct stat block as a base

    • Titan Echo, environmental presence rather than a separate creature

ComplicationThe Stone Warden is corrupted by the shard's pulse and attacks while the Titan Echo tests the party through shifting rune reliefs. Once the Warden is reduced to half its maximum hit points, the corruption phase-shifts: the runes flare, the Warden clears one condition affecting it, and the echo speaks through the stone. This is a custom dramatic feature, not an official monster trait.

ScalingIf the party is struggling, the rune reliefs stop attacking after one round and the Warden's corruption can be interrupted with a successful DC 14 Arcana or Religion check. For a stronger party, add one lesser stone guardian, but keep the Titan Echo as a testing presence rather than a full boss.

  • Vela Sootvein

    Witness, rescued forewoman

WantsRescue the trapped crew and defend the traditional miners' right to work with raw mineral mana, despite its dangers.

“The tapping has not stopped. Bring them out first, then we can argue about what the mountain owes us.”
  • Hadrik Forgeward

    Industrial foreman

WantsSupport safe, efficient extraction and prevent the collapse from driving up costs across the Kharbal Holdfasts.

“The Holdfasts cannot feed themselves on good intentions. A stable vein keeps the forges lit and the tribute manageable.”
  • Brundin Axebringer

QuestgiverQuestgiver, runemaster working under Forgemaster Brynna Kettlestone

WantsRecover the shard without provoking the sealed force, and keep the council from learning how much the old bindings have failed.

“The crystal is older than the clans. If its pulse is a summons, we must learn who is answering before we pull it free.”
  • Bellundra Sootvalor

    Wildcard, rival runemaster

WantsQuietly secure the recovery and avoid a public scandal, while monitoring the party's choices and the shard's effect.

“The Tribunal did not bring down the mountain. Someone merely wished to be first to claim what fell out of it.”

How it ends

Rewards

Experience: Use the table's normal 5E XP awards for the encounters and milestones. Award a campaign milestone for completing the rescue and securing the shard.
Gold: A modest Guild payment appropriate to the party's level, plus reasonable costs for travel, rescue supplies, and mine access. The Guilds may waive crafting surcharges if the party rescued the crew and stabilized the vein.
In the story: The party learns that the Nova's Heart shards can interact with ancient bindings and that at least one power beneath Kharbal may perceive them as potential hosts.
Standing: Gain the support of the Forgeward Guilds and a dwarven smith alliance. Favor either the traditional miners or the industrial foremen; the chosen group becomes a practical ally, while the other remains wary. If the Tribunal sigils are exposed, the Holdfasts begin an internal infiltration investigation.

Items

  • One single-use minor wondrous item selected by the favored faction, such as a custom rune token that grants advantage on one check to stabilize, repair, or safely operate mining equipment.

  • Alternatively, each party member may receive a runic resonance infusion on one weapon. Once per day, the weapon deals an extra 1d4 force or thunder damage on a hit. This is a custom reward.

  • Kethrum's Shard of Craft and Creation. Once per long rest, its bearer gains advantage on one check to craft, repair, appraise, or identify the make of an item. On a failed save when its influence manifests, the bearer becomes fixated on modifying or improving a piece of gear for at least ten minutes, even if the timing is dangerous.

On a win

The party brings the trapped miners out and secures Kethrum's Shard.

What it leaves open

A sending stone message from Cindreth Valeorean reaches the party in Kharbal-Mor. The soul-anchor resembles a phrase in his oldest texts on the Nova's Heart's original binding. He suspects the shards may be dormant conduits rather than inert fragments, a discovery that complicates the meaning of purifying the Heart.
Exposing the Tribunal sigils prompts the Kharbal Holdfasts to begin an internal infiltration investigation. Someone marked the shard for retrieval, and may still be operating in the region.
Word travels to Draknaar that the party's growing reputation has drawn unfavorable attention. A new rival or faction may move against them before their next journey.

If it fails

The party fails to clear the gallery before the next major shift or after two failed checks.
The trapped crew suffers injuries, and the Holdfasts impose higher tribute demands and metal-crafting surcharges until the mine's losses are recovered.
The party extracts the crystal without stabilizing the vein, or abandons the chamber after provoking the Echo.
The shard is recovered, but the soul-anchor fractures and the Titan Echo gains a stronger foothold in the old rune network. Future Kharbal mine incidents become more dangerous.
The party leaves the tribunal-style sigils undiscovered or conceals them without informing a trustworthy Kharbal authority.
The Obsidian Tribunal agent's mark is erased or overlooked. The Holdfasts lose the chance to begin an internal infiltration investigation, and the agent may reach the shard's trail first.

Complications (d6)

  1. 1A support post groans and drops splintering stone into the passage. Everyone in the exposed stretch must move behind cover or face a DC 13 Dexterity save, falling prone and taking 1d6 bludgeoning damage on a failure.
  2. 2A faint tapping answers from behind a newly shifted wall. The miners' signal is coming from a side pocket, adding a rescue opportunity but requiring a detour and fresh rubble-clearing effort.
  3. 3A blue-white pulse runs along a rune relief. The next creature to touch the marked stone hears a titan-sized heartbeat and must succeed on a DC 13 Wisdom save or have disadvantage on its next ability check.
  4. 4A tribunal-style judgment sigil is found beneath loose grit, its edge freshly scratched. It points toward the lower galleries, but does not identify who carved it.
  5. 5A pocket of raw mineral mana vents in a ringing haze. Until the party leaves the area, checks to handle or examine exposed crystal are made with disadvantage unless the source is shielded or carefully bypassed.
  6. 6A guardian mistakes a rescue rope for a binding line and pulls it taut. The crew must cut it, anchor it, or calm the guardian before the trapped miners lose their way out.
