The Opening

Three miners vanished beneath Brackenridge after the Emberwell ran cold, and the only survivor claims a figure named Kuut walked through solid stone. The settlement's speaker offers payment for answers, but warns that a second collapse could bury the entire town. Before the party leaves, blue light begins pulsing beneath the floor.

Set the Scene

The adventure opens in Brackenridge's central square during a sudden tremor. The stone well at the square's center cracks, releasing a thread of blue vapor and the sound of distant voices. Marra Venn gathers the party in the council hall, where she explains that three miners disappeared after entering a restricted shaft and that Sella Thorn returned alone, unable to remember the final hours underground. She asks the party to investigate before Orin Vale leads an armed expedition into the mine.

Marra Venn

Marra approaches the party in the council hall after witnessing the blue vapor erupt from the town well. She offers an initial payment, access to the mine, and whatever supplies the settlement can spare. If the party hesitates, another tremor injures several townsfolk, making the urgency undeniable.

Stakes

If the party fails, Brackenridge may be destroyed or forced to evacuate. If they succeed without learning the truth, the immediate danger can be stopped while leaving Kuut, the Heart Below, or Orin's sponsors as future threats.

Ticking Clock·The Emberwell will erupt or collapse within one day of the party entering the lower galleries. Each major delay, loud confrontation, or failed seal-related challenge advances the collapse and increases the danger in the final scene.

Background Lore

For generations, the mining settlement of Brackenridge has relied on the Emberwell, an ancient underground spring that produces warm water and faintly glowing mineral crystals. The settlement credits its survival to Kuut, a reclusive guardian who appears during disasters and vanishes before receiving thanks. Recently, the Emberwell has begun running cold, livestock are being born blind, and pale footprints have appeared around the sealed lower tunnels.

What the World Knows

The Emberwell has sustained Brackenridge for generations, but it has suddenly gone cold. Three miners vanished in the lower workings, and the survivor speaks of Kuut, a mysterious figure associated with the settlement's oldest legends. The party must descend into the mine, recover the missing workers, and prevent another collapse before Brackenridge loses its only dependable source of heat and water.
