The Opening

For three nights, blue lightning has struck the same hill beyond Brackenmere, and the village river now flows uphill beneath a sky full of falling stars. The reeve offers a reward to anyone willing to reach the ancient ruins, discover what is causing the disturbance, and stop it before the next storm destroys the valley. A frightened courier claims that treasure hunters have already entered the ruins and may be in greater danger than they realize.

Set the Scene

Begin in Brackenmere's rain-swept meeting hall. Reeve Mara Vell places a cracked blue crystal fragment on the table. It hums whenever thunder sounds, and Pell Underbough's account identifies the hilltop observatory as the source of the disturbance. Mara asks the party to leave before dawn, offering coin, supplies, and the village's lasting gratitude.

Mara Vell

Mara Vell approaches the party during a storm in Brackenmere's meeting hall. She speaks plainly, offers a modest advance, and admits that the village cannot spare enough guards to investigate the ruins. She asks the characters to bring back proof of what they find, even if the problem cannot be solved immediately.

Stakes

If the party fails, Brackenmere may be destroyed by supernatural weather, Lady Seraphine may gain control of the Dawnheart, and the awakening intelligence within the crystal may become hostile. If the party succeeds, the valley is saved, but the region learns that the lost sky roads and their ancient powers are not truly gone.

Ticking Clock·The Dawnheart completes its awakening at the next midnight storm, approximately six hours after the party leaves Brackenmere. Each major delay causes stronger weather effects and gives Lady Seraphine more time to reach the chamber.

Background Lore

Centuries ago, the skyborn kingdom of Aurelion anchored a floating crystal called the Dawnheart above the forest settlement of Brackenmere. The crystal regulated the weather, purified the nearby river, and kept an ancient cloud giant observatory hidden from mortal eyes. After Aurelion fell, the Dawnheart remained dormant beneath the ruins of the observatory. Now it has begun to awaken, drawing storms, strange lights, and ambitious scavengers toward the region.

What the World Knows

An ancient observatory beyond Brackenmere has begun radiating blue lightning and unnatural storms. The village reeve wants the cause investigated before the valley is destroyed, while a frightened courier warns that treasure hunters have entered the ruins first. The adventurers must reach the observatory, survive its defenses, and decide what to do with the mysterious Dawnheart at its center.
