The Opening

The prince's coronation ends when the ancient Star-Seal cracks above the throne, spilling silver fire through the palace and blackening the valley beyond. Disgraced archivist Ysara Vale presses a bloodstained ledger into your hands and says, "By the third night, the prisoner below will either be freed, forever chained, or furious enough to tear this kingdom apart."

Set the Scene

The coronation hall is filled with gold banners, incense, and cheering nobles when the Star-Seal above the throne emits a sound like a glass bell breaking underwater. A jagged crack runs across its crown-shaped form. Silver fire pours downward, touching the prince's brow and then racing through the palace foundations. Beyond the windows, the valley darkens as thornlike growths burst from the earth. Queen-Regent Elianor orders the doors sealed, while Ysara Vale slips through the panic and places a bloodstained ledger in the characters' hands. She claims the royal archives contain a lie that must be corrected before the third night.

Ysara Vale

Ysara approaches the characters during the coronation panic, either because they are trusted outsiders, known enemies of the court, or the only people close enough to escape the sealed palace. She offers the founder's ledger, a royal signet that grants limited access, and the promise of a pardon if they uncover the truth. She warns that Queen-Regent Elianor will order the official repair even if it means sacrificing villages touched by the blight.

Stakes

If the breach becomes permanent, the valley's protective magic collapses, the blight empowers monsters, and settlements turn on one another. Repairing the old seal preserves lives in the short term but continues the founders' exploitation of Seraphel. Freeing Seraphel ends the imprisonment but may expose the valley to judgment from a being whose mercy has been damaged by centuries of captivity. Redirecting the power offers the fairest long-term outcome, but it requires a willing bearer, shared sacrifice, or a new political order.

Ticking Clock·The Star-Seal will fail permanently at midnight on the third night. At the end of each day, the blight expands, monsters gain new abilities, travel becomes more dangerous, and nearby settlements become more hostile toward one another. If the party spends too long debating or backtracking, increase the power of the final manifestation and remove one peaceful resolution option.

Background Lore

Three centuries ago, Queen Aveline Star-Bound and her companions defeated a falling celestial entity called Seraphel, the Witness Beneath Heaven. Rather than destroy it, Aveline bound Seraphel beneath the valley using the Star-Seal, a crown-shaped lattice of meteoric silver, dragonbone, and royal blood. The seal protected the valley from outer horrors, but its hidden cost was the imprisonment of a conscious being whose power was gradually siphoned into the kingdom's fields, rivers, and royal dynasty. During the coronation of Prince Caelan, the Star-Seal cracked. A silver-black blight now spreads from the old royal crypt, and the breach will become permanent at midnight on the third night.

What the World Knows

During the prince's coronation, the ancient Star-Seal protecting Starfall Valley cracked and released a magical blight. Monsters are emerging from the royal forest, the old crypt has become inaccessible, and the royal court is preparing to seal the palace while nearby settlements panic. Disgraced archivist Ysara Vale believes the crack is connected to a forgotten founder's crime and asks the characters to investigate before the breach becomes permanent on the third night.
