A Rain of Little Wonders
A Rain of Little Wonders
Read aloud
The stream outside Brindlewick has stopped flowing, and bright green roots are climbing over the mill wheel. Mira Wren has built three brass cloud-launchers, but she needs rare woodland ingredients before the next dry week. She asks you to find them, reach the old Rain Bell, and bring gentle rain back to the forest.

Cheat sheet
Objectives
- 1Find a fresh dewcap for Mira's cloud-bubble formula.
- 2Recover a sky-crystal shard and learn why the old spring is blocked.
- 3Craft and launch the cloud-bubbles to heal the mutant vegetation colony.
- 4Complete the Keepsake Loop to earn a bonus workshop upgrade and a Pipwick friendship token.Optional
The clock
The next dry week begins at the end of the third in-world day. For this three-hour demo, show the clock visually through a shrinking water jar, drooping garden leaves, and a mill wheel turning more slowly. Do not require a rushed pace: each substantial delay advances the clock, while thoughtful shortcuts or successful repairs can buy time.

The hook
Set the scene
Begin in Mira's cozy workshop, where jars of luminous pollen sit beside a kettle and a hand-cranked brass weather gauge. She demonstrates a tiny cloud-bubble that rains on a potted fern, then shows the party the three empty launcher frames. Tamsin has sketched two routes into the woodland, while Orren quietly recognizes the Rain Bell symbol stamped on Mira's formula case. Let the players choose their first route and take one useful tool each: climbing spool, sap scraper, or folding wind vane.
How Mira Wren asks
Mira invites the party into her workshop during a gentle rainless afternoon.
She offers a clear plan, a hand-drawn map with two possible routes, and a demonstration of the cloud-bubble formula. She is honest that the woodland is unfamiliar and that her device has not yet been tested at full scale.

SocialThe table is here
1. The Workshop That Makes Clouds
Mira's warm workshop in Brindlewick, full of brass instruments, drying herbs, rain jars, and hand-painted woodland maps.
The party meets Mira, sees the demonstration, chooses equipment, and hears that three ingredients are needed. Orren recognizes the Rain Bell emblem but does not yet understand the full cause. Introduce a simple custom Keepsake Loop: each collectible offers a small clue, route hint, or workshop decoration, with a bonus for three.
NextTamsin leads the party to a fork in the woodland path. They can head first toward the high dew garden or descend toward the spring, and both routes eventually connect.

2. The High Dew Garden
A sunlit ravine and elevated canopy path, where mossy roots form bridges between trees and a dew garden clings to a cliffside.
Find the dewcap in a high, unreachable garden. Offer several traversal solutions, such as climbing, balancing along broad roots, redirecting a small waterfall, or trading Pipwick a shiny item for a shortcut. Place two optional keepsakes along alternate routes. The purpose is to teach movement and reward curiosity.
The Rootbridge CrossingNextThe stream below the garden leads down to an old spring chamber. A trail marker shows that both routes meet at the same stone basin.

3. The Spring That Forgot Its Song
A quiet, half-flooded chamber beneath an old millrace, lit by lantern moths and threaded with unusual roots.
Recover the crystal shard and investigate the blocked spring. The party can free the valve, use a counterweight, or encourage the lantern moths to reveal safe stepping stones. Orren's markings indicate that the waterworks are connected to the Rain Bell. A careful search finds a naturally fallen seedpod.
The Spring That Forgot Its SongNextWith the ingredients gathered, Mira can prepare the formula at a portable workbench in the nearby clearing. Orren offers to guide the group to the Rain Bell's sightline.

4. A Little Workshop in the Woods
An open clearing with three launcher stations, wind vanes, a portable alchemy bench, and a view of the spreading colony.
Mira and the party craft or repair the launchers using the collected ingredients. Players choose launch positions and test wind direction, using the brass vane, clues, or trial shots. Seedpods and small keepsakes in the clearing reward careful searches. Apply one specific complication if the group wants extra pressure.
Three Launchers, One RainNextOnce the launchers are aligned, the party must choose when to fire. The first bubbles drift toward the treetops, while Tamsin and Pipwick help keep the routes clear.

5. The Rain Comes Home
The woodland edge beneath the Rain Bell's old sightline, with drifting bubbles, green canopy, and distant rooftops visible beyond the trees.
Fire the launchers in a chosen sequence and respond to any remaining hazard without turning the finale into a boss fight. The clouds burst into gentle rain, healing the colony in visible stages. Give the players time to choose where the first cloud lands and to notice wildlife returning. Close with a quiet celebration in Brindlewick.
NextReturn to the workshop for the celebration and rewards, or follow the newly flowing stream toward one of the adventure hooks.
Behind it
What people believe
The old springs that sustain Brindlewick's woodland have gone still, and unusual vegetation is spreading toward the settlement.
Alchemist Mira Wren has devised a cloud-bubble treatment, but it requires three ingredients from difficult-to-reach places in the forest. With the right materials and careful launcher placement, the party may be able to bring restorative rain to the affected colony.
Background
At the edge of the valley of Brindlewick, an old waterworks called the Rain Bell once kept the woodland springs flowing.
Its cracked crystal heart has begun pulsing with a strange green light. Wherever the pulses reach, ordinary roots and shrubs grow into restless, hungry vegetation that drinks from streams and spreads across fields. The valley's inhabitants have not given up: they have formed a small workshop, shared what food they can, and asked the party to help restore the Rain Bell before the next dry week.
The stakes
If the party succeeds, Brindlewick regains water and the affected woodland begins to recover.
If they fail or delay, the colony spreads into the settlement's food gardens and blocks the millstream. The forest can still be healed later, but people and wildlife will need to relocate temporarily.
Encounters
3The Rootbridge Crossing
Exploration and environmental hazard
A narrow natural bridge over a clear ravine, with branching roots, wind chimes, soft moss landing pads, and two climbable tree trunks.
Foes
Creeping Carpet, a mat of springy roots that grabs ankles and packs
Pollen Puffers, three floating seedpods that burst into sleepy, glittering pollen when startled
ComplicationThe Creeping Carpet advances whenever the party makes loud impacts, leaves spilled alchemical material, or spends too long in one spot. It is a moving terrain hazard, not a boss. Players can distract it with mineral-rich pebbles, redirect it toward damp ground, or clear a narrow path with tools.
ScalingFor a smaller or less capable group, the rootbridge is stable and the Puffers scatter after one careful approach. For a larger or more capable group, the bridge sways, the Carpet blocks two routes, and the Puffers drift between separate platforms. Success is measured by crossing safely, not defeating foes.
The Spring That Forgot Its Song
Skill and exploration challenge
A half-submerged stone spring chamber, with waist-high water, a rusted brass valve, slick shelves, and a low ceiling threaded with roots.
Foes
Thirsty Tendrils, several flexible vines that tug at tools and sleeves
Lantern Moths, harmless glowing insects whose fluttering reveals safe stepping stones
ComplicationThe thirsty vegetation has curled around a spring valve. Forcing it open sends a pulse through the roots and causes a brief grasping-vine hazard. Freeing the valve carefully, soothing the roots with water, or solving the valve's old counterweight mechanism avoids the pulse.
ScalingFor an easier version, Orren's clue identifies the counterweight immediately. For a harder version, the markings have faded and the party must test the three controls while managing limited dry fuel. The tendrils restrain or displace, but do not deal serious injury unless the group deliberately escalates.
Three Launchers, One Rain
Crafting and skill challenge
A sunny clearing surrounded by affected woodland, with three modular brass launchers, a workbench, wind vanes, and open sightlines to the colony.
Foes
Sap-Slick Sprouts, small plants that spring up around warm machinery
Glimmering Seedpods, drifting collectibles that bob away when the machinery rattles
ComplicationOne launcher nozzle is clogged with crystallized sap. The party must clean it, craft a gasket, or re-route its shot. On a rushed repair, the launcher still works but its cloud lands on a nearby patch first, creating an extra area to tend.
ScalingFor a less experienced group, Mira's kit includes a spare gasket and the launcher stations have clear labels. For a more experienced group, the party must choose a limited number of parts to repair all launchers; optional collectibles can provide substitutes. There is no combat requirement.
Cast
4Mira Wren
QuestgiverQuestgiver and alchemist scientist. She supplies the cloud-bubble formula, interprets findings, and helps the party test its results.
WantsCreate a safe, repeatable remedy for the affected forest, and prove that patient science can help without destroying the woodland.
“I have the cloud formula, but it needs three ingredients the workshop cannot safely reach. Bring them back, and we can give this wood a gentler kind of rain.”
Tamsin Reed
Ally and local pathfinder. She knows the woodland's old routes, wildlife, and seasonal signs.
WantsProtect the woodland and its creatures while helping the settlement survive. She wants the party to heal the forest, not burn it away.
“The old paths are still there, under all that green. Listen for the water, and the forest will show you where to step.”
Orren Vale
Witness and former caretaker of the Rain Bell. He knows the relic's layout and feels responsible for the outbreak.
WantsRepair the Rain Bell and make amends for restarting it without understanding the damage it could cause.
“I only wanted the springs to keep flowing. I did not know the bell would make every root reach for the same water.”
Pipwick
Wildcard, a small, curious moss-winged creature who can point out hidden collectibles or shortcuts.
WantsGather interesting natural objects for their nest and guide the party to safe ledges in return for small shiny trinkets.
“No chopping, please. If you bring me a fallen seedpod, I can make it into a very fine hat.”
How it ends
Rewards
Items
Mira's pocket cloud-bubble vial, a one-use custom utility item that creates a brief, gentle shower over a small area.
A folding brass wind vane useful for judging wind direction and launcher aim.
If the optional Keepsake Loop is completed, a Pipwick friendship token that grants a friendly woodland guide or shortcut in a later adventure.
On a win
When the three launchers fire in time, their bubbles rise above the treetops and burst into a soft, shimmering rain.
The grasping roots loosen, the streams begin to run, and the woodland returns to ordinary growth in patches, with new flowers appearing wherever the rain settles. The party has protected Brindlewick without destroying the forest, and the settlement marks the occasion with a lantern picnic.
What it leaves open
If it fails
- If the party cannot collect enough ingredients, Mira produces one weak cloud-bubble. It heals a small part of the colony, establishing a follow-up quest to find the remaining materials.
- The forest is not permanently lost, but the settlement's water rationing begins. The party can return to gather missing materials while Mira and Tamsin keep the spread contained for a day.
- If the launchers are not aligned or repaired, the party can still fire them, but the party chooses which part of the colony receives the rain.
- The cloud rain lands unevenly, restoring one section while leaving another affected. The inhabitants must move their gardens and animals temporarily.
- If the party repeatedly uses destructive methods, the woodland's residents withhold help and the final sequence loses its shortcut clues.
- A rough approach damages a launcher or startles the wildlife. The forest remains recoverable, but a friendly creature refuses to approach until the party makes amends or leaves food and water.
Complications (d6)
- 1A bubble of green sap seals the nearest path. It can be gently warmed, dissolved with a collected dewcap, or bypassed by climbing the exposed roots.
- 2A gust scatters three seed-shaped map markers. Finding them reveals a short route to a collectible, but costs about ten minutes.
- 3A thirsty burrow-creature has become tangled in harmless but grasping vines. Freeing it earns a trail clue; rushing past makes it squeak and draw nearby creepers.
- 4A cloud-bubble launcher test floats off course and coats a marked patch in sticky pollen. The party must clean its nozzle or craft a replacement gasket before the final launch.
- 5A crystal ledge begins to hum and shed tiny sparks. The party can stabilize it with a brass pin, harvest one safe crystal shard, or retreat and lose access to this optional cache.
