The Bell That Calls Death

A bell tolls for the living, and Death is missing.

Read aloud

The funeral bell rings across Bellwether, though no one has died today. A girl grips your sleeve and says, 'It rang for my sister yesterday, and she is still missing.' From the river comes a second toll, muffled and impossibly close.

The hook

Set the scene

Read the hook aloud in the riverside market as the town prepares a funeral for someone who is still alive. The bell rings again while the crowd watches, and Ilyra Venn pushes through to ask the party for help. Give the players time to question her and notice that the ferrymen have barred the river crossing.

How Ilyra Venn asks

Ilyra approaches the party in the riverside market after seeing them respond calmly to the bell's latest toll.

Rumours

Roll a rumour

1“The bell rang three times for Old Fen, but he was seen buying apples the next morning.”
2“Mara Venn never removes her mask in public, even at her sister's table.”
3“The shrine's prior has been buying lamp oil and sealing the lower doors.”
4“Tavi says the drowned road is visible at low tide, though no map shows it.”
5“Some families leave an empty place at supper for a guest who has not crossed yet.”

Behind it

What people believe

The current bearer of the name Death has vanished from Bellwether.

Background

In the river town of Bellwether, the dead are traditionally ferried across the Stillwater by a masked guide known simply as Death.

The stakes

If the bell keeps ringing, the dead will be pulled toward Bellwether before their time, and the living may follow them.

Encounters

2
  • The Flooded Bell Shrine

    Combat or negotiation

A half-submerged stone shrine with narrow ledges, waist-deep water, hanging chains, and a cracked bronze bell above a flooded stair.

    Foes

    • River-woken ferrymen

    • Bell shrine wardens

ComplicationIf the bell shrine's cracked clapper is struck, the dead rise from the river mud and pursue the nearest living creature. The party can stop the effect by silencing the bell, calming the spirits, or breaking the clapper.

ScalingFor a smaller or less combat-focused group, use one warden and make the river-woken spirits a hazard to evade or appease. For a larger or more experienced group, add wardens and have the rising water divide the battlefield.

  • The Crossing at Stillwater

    Social or combat

A broad, moonlit riverbank with a narrow ferry, leaning grave markers, and a current that briefly reveals the drowned road beneath the water.

    Foes

    • Prior Othran Vale

    • Bound river shades

ComplicationOthran can use the bell's rhythm to draw spirits toward the party. Interrupting the rhythm, appealing to his grief, or exposing his deception weakens his control before the confrontation turns violent.

ScalingFor a lower-powered party, Othran is alone and the shades can be dispersed with a successful social or ritual approach. For a stronger party, add shades and let Othran change the river's currents to hinder movement.

  • Ilyra Venn

    QuestgiverQuestgiver and Death's younger sister

WantsWants her missing sister returned and fears the town will blame the family for the strange deaths.

“Please find Mara before the bells call my daughter's name.”
  • Mara Venn, called Death

    Ally and missing psychopomp

WantsWants to prevent a mass crossing and preserve the town's right to mourn on its own terms.

“A name is not a sentence. The living can still choose what they do with the time they have.”
  • Prior Othran Vale

Antagonist and keeper of the bell shrine

WantsWants to seize the office of Death and use the crossing bell to force the river's spirits into obedience.

“The river has waited long enough. Give me the mask, and I will finish what she could not.”
  • Tavi Reed

    Witness and local ferryman's apprentice

WantsWants to be believed about the bell's warning and to protect the other children who heard it.

“I heard the bell under the water. It was calling my name, but I was standing on dry ground.”

How it ends

Rewards

Experience: Award experience appropriate to the system for resolving the mystery, protecting the town, and making a consequential choice about the crossing.
Gold: A modest purse from Ilyra's family and additional payment from the town council, scaled to the campaign's economy.
In the story: The party earns the trust of people who work around death and mourning. Mara may offer a future favor or a difficult truth about one character's past.
Standing: The ferrymen and families of Bellwether regard the party as protectors. The bell shrine's surviving wardens may become allies if the party handled the confrontation without needless bloodshed.

Items

  • A ferry-token that allows its bearer to request passage from the local river spirits, if treated respectfully.

  • A small silver handbell that rings softly when an unquiet spirit is nearby. This is a custom story item, not a rules-system artifact.

On a win

The bell no longer calls the living toward death, and Mara is either safely returned or allowed to complete the crossing by choice.

What it leaves open

If Mara keeps the office, she asks the party to help repair the spirit-road before the next flood season.
If another character takes up the mask, Death's work becomes personal and the party may be drawn into disputes between the living and the dead.
If Othran escapes, he seeks another bell and claims the party stole the town's chance to command its ancestors.
A message carried by a grateful ghost reveals that another settlement's crossing has gone silent.

If it fails

The party fails to stop Othran before he strikes the bell.
The crossing bell rings and several townsfolk die in the ensuing panic. The party can still rescue Mara and end the threat, but Bellwether remembers the cost and survivors may distrust them.
The party reaches Mara but cannot persuade her to return or find a safe way to free her.
Mara remains trapped between the banks and the river's spirits grow more restless. The party may return later with a way to repair the crossing or bargain with the spirits.
The party defeats the immediate danger but allows Othran to flee with a piece of Death's regalia.
Othran escapes with a fragment of the mask, gaining leverage over the shrine and setting up a future pursuit.

Complications (d6)

  1. 1A funeral bell rings once from beneath the river. Until the party finds its source, one NPC they have met refuses to cross any bridge.
  2. 2A recently deceased traveler rises long enough to deliver a personal message to one character, then begins walking toward the river.
  3. 3The river fog separates the party from their guide. Each separated character hears a different loved one's voice calling from the opposite bank.
  4. 4A frightened crowd mistakes the party for agents of the bell shrine and blocks the route to the river.
  5. 5The crossing bell cracks during a tremor. The next strike will summon every unquiet spirit in Bellwether.
  6. 6A ghost offers the party a shortcut in exchange for carrying its sealed letter to someone still living.
