The Bell Beneath the Breakers
The Bell Beneath the Breakers
Read aloud
The harbor bell has vanished, and every boat that tries to cross the Lantern Shoal comes back battered or not at all. Harbormaster Sella Vane offers a reward to anyone who can find the bronze bell before the next high tide. From the beach, you hear a faint answering chime beneath the crash of the waves.

The hook
Set the scene
The characters arrive at Gullwatch's beach as a fishing boat limps into the harbor, its sail torn and its hull scraped by the reef. Harbormaster Sella Vane waits beside the empty stone plinth where the bronze bell should hang. She offers the promised reward and asks the party to find the bell before high tide, when two missing boats are expected to attempt the crossing.
How Harbormaster Sella Vane asks
Sella approaches the party at the empty bell plinth, offers a clear reward, and emphasizes that the next high tide is the deadline.
She is candid about the missing boats but initially withholds her doubts about the salvage crews.

1. The Empty Plinth
Gullwatch's broad beach, around a stone bell plinth and a line of overturned fishing boats.
Sella explains the danger, sets the high-tide deadline, and asks the characters to investigate. They can question her, inspect the empty plinth, or talk to worried fishers.
NextA trail of fresh drag marks and scraps of oilskin leads toward the wreckline.

2. Marks in the Wreckline
A stretch of beach littered with driftwood, exposed shells, shallow pools, and the remains of a small wreck.
The party searches the wreckline and tide pools for tracks, a dropped tool, or a witness. Tavi can describe hearing a second chime from beneath the water; Mara can identify signs of unnatural currents. A fight may break out if the characters disturb the scavengers.
The Wreckline ScuffleNextThe evidence points to a narrow path between the rocks that is passable only while the tide is low.

3. The Tide Road
A rocky beach route with a stranded boat, slippery ledges, and waves that regularly wash across the path.
The party follows the path, manages the hazardous shore, and decides whether to help a drifting fishing boat caught near the reef. Success earns gratitude and may provide a boat or a local guide; ignoring it costs the village time and trust.
NextThe route ends at a sea cave where a faint bronze chime echoes from within.

4. The Bell in the Undertow
A sea cave with a narrow pebble beach, a raised ledge, a tidal pool, and the bell lashed to a rock spur.
The characters find Dain with the bell and learn that he is trying to reach a wreck beyond the cave. The party can negotiate, offer help, or fight when the cave eels emerge and the tide begins to rise.
The Bell in the UndertowNextOnce the bell is quieted or recovered, the party must decide what to do with Dain and how to return it to Gullwatch.

5. A Safer Crossing
Gullwatch beach at the edge of high tide, with villagers watching from the dunes.
The party returns to the beach plinth and chooses whether to restore the bell, seek another way to quiet its resonance, or investigate the source of the answering chime. Sella and Mara respond according to how the party handled Dain and the endangered boat.
NextThe village celebrates the restored route, while the party can follow new leads along the coast.
Behind it
What people believe
The signal bell that guides boats safely through the Lantern Shoal has been stolen from Gullwatch's beach.
With the sea turning rough and fishing boats at risk, Harbormaster Sella Vane asks the characters to recover it before the next high tide. Clues point toward a sea cave and a salvage diver who may know more than he admits.
Background
The fishing village of Gullwatch depends on the Lantern Shoal, a reef that breaks the strongest waves before they reach the harbor.
For generations, a bronze signal bell on the beach has been rung at low tide to guide boats through the reef's safest channel. Three nights ago, the bell vanished, and the sea has grown unusually rough.
The stakes
If the bell remains missing or rings in the sea cave through high tide, the Lantern Shoal's currents may batter boats against the reef and threaten Gullwatch's food supply.
Dain's attempt to reach the wreck could also worsen the danger beneath the water.
Encounters
2The Wreckline Scuffle
Combat
A crescent of wet sand beside a half-buried wreck, with driftwood, tide pools, and shallow water that can impede movement.
Foes
2-4 reef crabs, using suitable low-threat beast statistics
1 brine-touched scavenger, using a suitable low-threat humanoid or monstrosity profile
ComplicationThe beach shifts underfoot as waves sweep through the fight. Each round, the GM can designate one strip of sand as temporarily flooded, forcing creatures there to move or risk being knocked prone. Use ordinary movement and saving throw rules appropriate to the group's system and level.
ScalingFor a party of three or fewer, use two reef crabs and omit the scavenger. For a party of six or more, add one crab. For characters at level 3, keep the creatures' attacks modest and avoid concentrating damage on one character.
The Bell in the Undertow
Combat or negotiation
A sea cave with a narrow pebble beach, a raised shelf, a tidal pool, and a bronze bell lashed to a rock spur. The entrance floods as the tide rises.
Foes
Dain Rusk, using a suitable low-level humanoid profile
1-2 brine-wreathed cave eels, using suitable custom low-threat creature statistics
ComplicationThe cave is flooding. At the end of each round of combat, a wave crosses the lower floor; creatures in the marked low area must move to higher ground or face a modest risk of being knocked prone and pushed toward the water. The party can also use the cave's natural ledges to gain cover or a better position.
ScalingFor a party of three or fewer, Dain begins willing to bargain and only one cave eel appears. For a party of six or more, add one cave eel. For level 3 characters, give Dain fewer allies and make surrender or negotiation easy to achieve.

Antagonist and salvage diver
WantsUse the bell's magic to hold a dangerous sea-cave passage open long enough to reach a wreck containing her missing brother's remains.
“I took the bell because the sea was going to take everything else. You can help me, or you can watch it happen.”

How it ends
Rewards
Items
A weatherproof chart of the Lantern Shoal and nearby coves
Mara's tideglass charm, a custom token that can be used once to identify the direction of the nearest safe stretch of shore
On a win
The party recovers the bell and restores it to the beach plinth or otherwise quiets its resonance before high tide.
The water settles enough for boats to cross the shoal safely. If the party also reaches an understanding with Dain, Sella agrees to help him search the wreck by daylight and with a proper crew.
What it leaves open
If it fails
- The party fails to persuade the salvage crew to share what they know.
- The party can still pursue the missing bell, but must do so while boats remain stranded and villagers grow impatient.
- The party fails to rescue the drifting boat or its deckhand during the rising tide.
- A fishing boat is damaged, delaying the party's return to Gullwatch and costing the village supplies. Harbormaster Sella's trust falls unless the party makes restitution.
- The party cannot secure the bell before the tide reaches its highest point.
- The cave passage collapses or floods shut. The party may escape, but the bell and Dain's objective remain unresolved, and the sea continues to threaten the harbor.
Complications (d6)
- 1A sudden surge floods the lowest stretch of beach. Anyone there must reach higher ground or lose unsecured gear to the water.
- 2A collapsing sand shelf opens beneath one character, dropping them into a shallow, wave-filled hollow. An ally must help them climb out before the next large wave.
- 3A flock of startled gulls swarms the party, obscuring sight and scattering loose papers, small tools, or other exposed objects.
- 4A fishing boat breaks free from its mooring and drifts toward the reef. The party can rescue its trapped deckhand, secure the boat, or let it ground on the rocks.
- 5A pocket of sharp shell fragments is exposed by the tide, making a short stretch of beach hazardous to cross quickly.
- 6A wave deposits a sealed oilskin pouch at the party's feet. It contains Dain's notes on the sea cave, but a nearby villager recognizes the handwriting and demands to know where the party got it.
