The Opening

The Deepwell Corporation has bought six mining camps in less than a year, paying far more than any of them are worth. Now the miners of Camp Veyra are vanishing, the old shafts are glowing at night, and a dying surveyor has given you a map marked with one warning: DO NOT LET THEM REACH THE HEART.

Set the Scene

The adventure begins at Camp Veyra beneath a sky stained orange by distant factory smoke. The mining settlement is nearly abandoned, its company sign freshly painted over with the Deepwell insignia. A steam tram waits at the station with no crew aboard, while a brass loudspeaker repeats a cheerful message announcing that the camp has entered a period of voluntary modernization. Behind the bunkhouse, a miner's boot protrudes from a collapsed service tunnel, and from far below comes a slow metallic pulse that can be felt through the soles of the characters' feet.

Mara Veyra

Mara Veyra approaches the characters in a locked freight shed after observing them question the company guards. She offers her deed, a damaged survey map, and access to a hidden workers' tunnel in exchange for proof of what Deepwell is doing and help saving any miners still alive below.

Rumours

  1. 01
Deepwell buys mines only after a worker dreams of a black sun beneath the earth.
  2. 02
The company's surveyors never carry pickaxes, but they always carry tuning forks.
  3. 03
A mine that rejects Deepwell's offer suffers a boiler accident within the month.
  4. 04
The old miners' chapel has a bell that rings underground when no one touches it.
  5. 05
The corporation's richest shareholders have never seen the mines they claim to own.
Stakes

If Deepwell succeeds, it will gain access to an effectively limitless source of energy, but the activation will destabilize the earth beneath the mining frontier. Thousands of workers and residents may die in the resulting earthquakes. If the party fails to expose the corporation, Deepwell will control the evidence, the witnesses, and the legal narrative.

Ticking Clock·The Buried Engine completes one activation stage at the end of each major adventure milestone. The party has three in-game days before the engine reaches irreversible startup. Delays, failed negotiations, or long rests in the deepest levels advance the clock unless the party disables a resonance relay.

Background Lore

During the height of the steampunk industrial boom, the Deepwell Corporation became famous for buying exhausted mining camps at prices far above their practical value. Its directors claim they are preserving jobs and preventing dangerous abandoned workings from collapsing. In reality, the company is assembling a chain of mines positioned above a vast subterranean machine built by an unknown pre-industrial civilization. The machine is not a mine, but a planet-scale engine that can draw heat, pressure, and magical energy from the deep earth.

What the World Knows

The Deepwell Corporation has been buying mining camps throughout the frontier, paying extraordinary prices and removing the workers soon afterward. Camp Veyra is the first place where the pattern has become impossible to ignore: miners are missing, company records have been altered, and the old shafts emit a strange vibration. The characters must investigate the camp, survive Deepwell's efforts to silence them, and discover what the corporation intends to uncover before the next camp is purchased.
