The Bell Beneath the Reeds
The Bell Beneath the Reeds
Read aloud
At dusk, a bell tolls from beneath the flooded chapel, though Fenwatch's old bell tower has been empty for generations. Reeve Mara Venn offers a reward for the brass clapper and asks you to find out why the sound has returned. By morning, a local scavenger will be missing.

Objectives
- 1Reach the Bell Chamber.
- 2Stop the bell from calling people into the crypt.
- 3Resolve the disappearance connected to the crypt.
- 4Restore the names of the drowned.Optional
The clock
The water rises in three stages: when the party enters the nave, when they reach the lower stair, and during the final confrontation. At each stage, one previously safe route becomes difficult or submerged. The GM can advance a stage after a major delay, a loud fight, or a failed hazard attempt.

Set the scene
Read aloud: The chapel lies half swallowed by reeds, its stone doorway just above the marsh water. A bell tolls once from somewhere underneath it, and the sound trembles through the mud beneath your feet. Reeve Mara Venn waits on the bank with a lantern and a sealed purse, while a fresh set of footprints leads down into the dark entrance.
How Mara Venn asks
Mara approaches the party at the edge of the marsh after hearing they are capable of handling dangerous work.
She offers a written payment agreement and a small map based on an old chapel survey, warning that it does not show the flooded lower passages.

4. The Witness in the Dark
A cramped reliquary above the lower waterline, lined with empty stone shelves.
The party finds Talla hiding in a dry reliquary alcove. She admits she came for a family locket and describes hearing the bell call her by a childhood name. She can guide the party to the chamber if they promise not to leave her behind.
NextTalla points out an inscription that indicates the bell chamber lies beyond the flooded stair.

5. The Name the Bell Demands
The circular Bell Chamber beneath the crypt.
The party confronts the Bell-Warden and discovers the worn tablets in the chamber. They can fight the spirit, restore the names and speak them aloud, or attempt another bargain. The water begins to rise while they decide.
The Bell ChamberNextOnce the bell is silenced or the party retreats, they return to Fenwatch to report what happened and claim their reward.
Behind it
What people believe
The Reedbed Crypt lies beneath a drowned chapel outside Fenwatch.
A bell has begun sounding from its flooded halls, and a local scavenger has gone missing after entering the site. Reeve Mara Venn hires the party to investigate, recover the bell's brass clapper, and bring the missing local home if possible.
Background
The Reedbed Crypt was built beneath a drowned chapel to hold the remains of the Vey family and the bells used to guide boats through the marsh.
Generations of flooding buried its lower halls in black water and reeds. The nearby village of Fenwatch has long treated the crypt as a place of mourning, but recent bell sounds from below have drawn scavengers and frightened locals to its entrance.
The stakes
If the Bell-Warden's calls continue, more people will enter the crypt and the dead may be disturbed.
If the bell is destroyed without resolving the funerary pact, the drowned dead may spread through the marsh. The immediate danger is Talla's safety and the rising water; the longer danger is Fenwatch's relationship with its dead.
Encounters
2The Sunken Nave
Combat or hazard
A broad chapel nave filled waist-deep with dark water, tilted stone pews, floating reed mats, and a central island of cracked flagstones.
Foes
Crypt eels
Drowned grave-keeper
ComplicationThe water conceals unstable grave slabs. A character who moves quickly across the chamber may break through into a deeper pocket, while loud combat risks bringing down a section of the reed-choked ceiling.
ScalingFor a smaller or less experienced party, use only the drowned grave-keeper and make the eels a hazard. For a larger or more capable party, add a second drowned grave-keeper or let the eels attack in coordinated groups.
The Bell Chamber
Combat, social, or ritual challenge
A circular chamber with a cracked bronze bell suspended above a flooded pit, narrow stone walkways, chain pulleys, and name tablets worn nearly smooth.
Foes
The Bell-Warden
Two drowned sentinels
ComplicationThe Bell-Warden can use the bell's echo to make voices seem to come from different corridors. Characters who split up risk being isolated in rising water. The spirit will pause if the party speaks the names carved on the tombs or offers to restore the broken memorial.
ScalingFor a gentler finale, the sentinels withdraw if the party begins the memorial rite. For a tougher finale, the Bell-Warden can animate loose chains and call one additional sentinel from a wall niche.
Cast
4Mara Venn
QuestgiverQuestgiver and Fenwatch reeve
WantsRecover the clapper before the crypt's strange sounds drive more villagers into panic. She knows the bell has been silent for decades but does not know why it has begun sounding again.
“Bring back the brass bell clapper, and I will pay you. Do not ring it, whatever you hear down there.”
Sedge
Ally and marsh-wise keeper of the chapel grounds
WantsKeep the crypt's dead undisturbed and persuade the party to restore the names of the drowned rather than take their grave goods.
“The water is listening. It knows which names we have forgotten.”
Talla Reed
Witness and frightened local scavenger
WantsFind her missing sister and conceal that she entered the crypt first to search for family heirlooms.
“I only wanted my sister's locket. Then the bell called me by a name nobody has used since I was a child.”
The Bell-Warden
Antagonist, a drowned caretaker's lingering spirit
WantsUse the bell's resonance to draw a living soul into the crypt and bind it in place of the spirit that has guarded the dead.
“One true name. One living voice. That is all the dark asks.”
How it ends
Rewards
Items
A sealed tin of marsh-proof lamp wicks
A bronze chapel token that identifies its bearer as a friend of Fenwatch
Optional: the bell's brass clapper, if the party recovers it without using it to break the pact
On a win
The bell falls silent, Talla is brought back or accounted for, and the party returns with a clear explanation of the danger.
If the memorial tablets are restored, the Bell-Warden lets the dead rest and the crypt's water begins to recede. Mara pays the agreed reward, while Sedge asks the party to help protect the site from future scavengers.
What it leaves open
If it fails
- The party fails to silence or bargain with the Bell-Warden before the water reaches the marked threshold.
- The Bell-Warden binds a volunteer, captive, or nearby villager to the crypt as its new living voice. The victim can still be rescued, but the party must return before the next high tide.
- The party leaves without securing the bell or warning the reeve about the danger.
- The bell's repeated calls draw scavengers and desperate villagers into the crypt, causing injuries and a public crisis in Fenwatch.
- The party ignores Talla's presence or cannot locate her before the final chamber floods.
- Talla is lost in the lower passages, and her family blames the party for abandoning her. The crypt remains accessible, but trust in Fenwatch is badly damaged.
Complications (d6)
- 1A raft of loose reeds jams the entrance passage. Clearing it takes time, and the noise alerts creatures in the flooded nave.
- 2A cold current reverses direction and pulls one unsecured character or object toward a submerged side passage.
- 3The bell rings once from below. Each character hears a familiar voice call them by a name from their past.
- 4Talla's dropped lantern spills oil across a narrow ledge. The party must contain the fire or lose the ledge as a safe route.
- 5A sealed niche cracks under pressure, releasing a cloud of choking marsh gas and exposing a burial inscription.
- 6The water rises to the next marked level, submerging one explored route and forcing the party to find another way through.
