The Magnificent Breach
The Magnificent Breach
Read aloud
The sea around Hot Springs Island boils in three places at once, and pillars of fire punch through the clouds above the volcano. Namarra, commander of a desperate resistance, points toward the palace: "Svarku's gauntlet is tearing holes in the world. We march now, or there may be no world left to save."

Cheat sheet
Objectives
- 1Break through or bypass the Cinder Gate and enter Svarku's palace.
- 2Navigate the palace's furnace halls and decide what to do about the imprisoned laborers.
- 3Stop the gauntlet from opening further portals.
- 4Prevent the portal network from giving Molotek a path into the Material Plane.
The clock
Each time the party takes a long rest, retreats, or allows a major breach to remain uncontrolled, the GM may advance the portal crisis one stage: a new island breach opens; the palace anchors begin to resonate; Molotek's manifestations appear; or the central breach starts consuming nearby terrain. Telegraph each escalation and allow the party to choose how to respond.

The hook
Set the scene
The resistance assembles on a basalt ridge above the palace approach. Below, the volcanic palace shines with gold leaf and molten-glass windows, while fresh portals flare open around its towers. Namarra sets out the assault plan beside a map marked with the known breaches. Grumbar asks the party to keep the ogres' freedom in view; Quill-7 quietly asks who will own any recovered planar technology. The force is ready to march, but the party can choose its approach and decide what promises to make before the first attack.
How Namarra of the Deep Current asks
Namarra sends an urgent message through a nereid scout and asks the party to meet the resistance on the basalt ridge before the assault begins.
She offers command authority over the palace entry plan, but makes clear that the allies will not be expendable tools.

socialThe table is here
1. The Last Muster
A basalt ridge overlooking the volcanic palace, with the resistance gathered around a map and signal fires.
Namarra briefs the party and allied commanders. The party decides whether to prioritize a frontal assault, a concealed entry, negotiations with discontented salamanders, or a split operation. Make clear what the allies can handle and what requires the heroes.
NextOnce the party chooses an approach and sets any terms with the allies, the resistance advances toward the palace gates.

2. Across the Cinder Gate
The black-glass causeway and gatehouse above a lava trench.
The party must reach the palace through a defended approach. They can fight through the sentries, create a diversion with the resistance, exploit cover and terrain, or use an agreed secret route. Track the cost of delay or casualties, not just whether the party wins a fight.
The Cinder GateNextWith the gate open or bypassed, the party enters the palace service passages. A captured or deserted guard can point toward the furnace halls.

3. The Furnace That Never Sleeps
A foundry maze of iron walkways, chain lifts, furnace controls, and ogre holding pens.
The party discovers the furnace halls' captives and the machinery feeding heat into the palace's lower structure. They must decide how to free the prisoners, handle the overseers, and prevent the route ahead from being cut off.
The Captive FurnaceNextA rescued captive, a seized control room, or a captured guard provides the route to Svarku's audience chamber.

4. The Map Beneath the Palace
An archive and observatory built around a sealed shaft, its astrolabes tracking breaches across the island.
The party finds signs that the portals form a deliberate pattern rather than isolated accidents. They can study the palace's anchor marks, consult Quill-7's device, question Svarku's servants, or proceed directly toward the throne chamber at greater risk.
NextUnderstanding the anchors reveals how to interrupt the portal network and gives the party leverage in its confrontation with Svarku.

5. The Magnificent Breach
The lavish throne room above a volcanic shaft, where unstable portals distort the room and Molotek's pressure grows.
Svarku waits in his throne chamber, expecting either the party or his superiors to arrive. He may fight, bargain, demand recognition, or offer to help if the party protects his status. The encounter should turn on both the gauntlet and the party's plan for the portals.
The Magnificent BreachNextIf the party stabilizes the breach, move to the aftermath and let the allies decide how to respond to Svarku and the gauntlet. If it remains open, the crisis becomes the next adventure.
Behind it
What people believe
Across Hot Springs Island, portals to the Elemental Plane of Fire are opening without warning.
The efreeti Svarku the Magnificent rules from a gaudy volcanic palace, and his powerful gauntlet is believed to be connected to the breaches. A coalition of freed ogres, fifty nereids led by a marid, a cosmic corporation, and the party's other allies is marching on the palace. Reach Svarku, stop the portals, and keep the island from being consumed by fire.
Background
For generations, the efreeti Svarku the Magnificent has ruled from a volcanic palace on Hot Springs Island, displaying trophies, enslaved laborers, and impossible luxuries as proof of his power.
His reality-tearing gauntlet has begun opening portals to the Elemental Plane of Fire across the island. A resistance has assembled: freed ogres who once served the efreet, fifty nereids, their marid commander, a cosmic corporation with its own agenda, and allies the party gathered on the way. The portals are not merely dangerous breaches. Their growing network threatens to destabilize the Material Plane and expose all reality to Molotek, the Fire Primal.
The stakes
If the party fails, the portals spread beyond Hot Springs Island, destabilizing the Material Plane and giving Molotek a path toward reality itself.
If they succeed, they can stop the immediate catastrophe, but must decide who controls Svarku's gauntlet and how a fragile coalition will shape the island's future.
Encounters
3The Cinder Gate
Combat
A black-glass causeway crosses a lava trench before the palace gate. Narrow cover, a raised portcullis platform, and an unstable fire portal divide the approach.
Foes
Fire salamander sentries
Salamander fire-snakes
ComplicationAt initiative count 20 each round, a portal vents a line of flame across one marked lane. Creatures in that lane must move, take cover, or endure the hazard. The resistance can draw some defenders away if the party coordinated with them.
ScalingFor a smaller or less optimized party, reduce the sentries and remove the fire-snakes. For a larger or highly optimized party, add a second patrol wave or a salamander champion. These are encounter-building suggestions, not fixed official stat blocks.
The Captive Furnace
Combat
A vast foundry of iron catwalks, hanging chains, furnace mouths, and a central control wheel. One route leads to the palace interior; another reaches the captive pens.
Foes
Fire salamander overseers
Salamander guards
A magma-fed furnace construct
ComplicationThe furnace control wheel is chained to the floor and can be operated from either side of the room. Each round it remains uncontrolled, the heat rises and the captives' escape route narrows. The party can fight, bargain, sabotage the machinery, or split its effort.
ScalingFor an easier version, remove the furnace construct or have the freed ogres hold off one guard group. For a more demanding version, the construct can reawaken once after being disabled. The construct is a custom creature concept; use an appropriate existing construct stat block or improvise one.
The Magnificent Breach
Combat
Svarku's opulent throne chamber surrounds a volcanic shaft. Gold-plated balconies, collapsing obsidian bridges, and several unstable portals offer cover and dangerous shortcuts.
Foes
Svarku the Magnificent
Fire salamander honor guards
Molotek's ember-shaped manifestations
ComplicationThe gauntlet's portals distort the chamber at initiative count 20. The GM shifts one safe zone or hazard marker each round. Characters can disrupt the anchors, confront Svarku, or try to reach the gauntlet, but unattended instability worsens the breach.
ScalingFor a smaller party, have the honor guards withdraw when Svarku is bloodied and make the manifestations hazards rather than independent foes. For a stronger party, add a second manifestation or let Svarku use an additional portal effect. Treat the manifestations and gauntlet effects as custom features, not canonical D&D 5E monsters or rules.
Cast
4Namarra of the Deep Current
QuestgiverQuestgiver and resistance commander, a marid who coordinates fifty nereids and the allied forces.
WantsLead the resistance to Svarku's palace, free the remaining captives, and prevent the portals from consuming the island.
“We take the palace together. The ogres get their freedom, and the waters get their future.”
Grumbar Ashshoulder
Ally and former ogre slave, a practical resistance captain.
WantsDestroy the systems that enslaved the ogres and ensure that the resistance's victory does not replace one tyrant with another.
“I will not be anyone's property again. Point me at the chain-master.”
Svarku the Magnificent
Antagonist and efreeti ruler of the volcanic palace.
WantsKeep his palace, status, and freedom; he wants to survive the crisis but refuses to admit the gauntlet is beyond his control.
“Magnificence is a matter of perspective. Mine happens to be enforced by several hundred salamanders.”
Quill-7, Interplanar Claims Factor
Wildcard and representative of the cosmic corporation allied with the resistance.
WantsSecure the corporation's portal-mapping device and valuable salvage while limiting liability for its involvement in the crisis.
“Our charter defines this as an existential breach. Our contract, regrettably, defines the island as collateral.”
How it ends
Rewards
Items
A heat-resistant mantle recovered from Svarku's wardrobe. Custom wondrous item: while worn, it grants protection against ordinary environmental heat, but not immunity to fire damage.
A portal compass made by the cosmic corporation. Custom device that points toward the nearest active planar breach; it does not identify the breach's stability or safety.
The reality-tearing gauntlet, if the party claims it. Custom artifact-level device with volatile portal-opening and sealing capabilities; its powers and risks require GM adjudication.
On a win
The party and its allies stop the portal network from expanding and prevent Molotek from entering the Material Plane.
The palace may be captured, destroyed, or left in Svarku's hands depending on the party's choices. Survivors of the resistance determine the immediate future of Hot Springs Island, while the gauntlet and any remaining breaches become matters of negotiation, custody, and risk.
What it leaves open
If it fails
- The party fails to secure the Cinder Gate or spends too long allowing reinforcements to regroup.
- The resistance loses its coordinated assault and is scattered into isolated groups. The party can still reach the palace, but must enter by a less secure route and will have fewer allies available for the finale.
- The party abandons the Captive Furnace without disabling it or freeing the prisoners.
- The captives are carried into the palace's deepest furnace, and the ogre resistance suffers a serious loss of trust. They may still assist, but will prioritize rescue over supporting the party.
- The party cannot stabilize the breach in the throne chamber.
- The portal network remains active and expands. Hot Springs Island becomes a spreading zone of planar fire, forcing a later campaign to contain the breaches before they reach other settlements.
- The party is defeated or allows Svarku to leave the final confrontation with the gauntlet.
- Svarku escapes with the gauntlet, or Molotek gains a lasting foothold in the Material Plane. The immediate assault may still save survivors, but the threat becomes a campaign-scale emergency.
Complications (d6)
- 1A new portal opens across the resistance's planned route. A wave of superheated air forces the force to detour or spend time and supplies shielding the column.
- 2A frightened ogre scout reports that captives are being moved through the palace's lower furnace halls. The resistance asks the party to choose between pursuing the captives and keeping the assault on schedule.
- 3A portal's gravity reverses for a minute, pulling loose equipment and creatures toward its burning threshold. Anyone caught in the open must secure themselves or risk being dragged toward it.
- 4Quill-7's portal-mapping device identifies a breach beneath the palace but demands that the corporation's salvage team be allowed to collect the gauntlet afterward.
- 5A squad of salamanders offers to desert if the party can get their families out of the palace. Their information is useful, but helping them costs the resistance precious time.
- 6Molotek's presence causes every open flame nearby to speak in a single voice, naming one hero and promising to make that character the first witness to the world's end.
