The Opening

Bellwether's spring has turned bitter, and the village will soon be unable to drink from it. The cure is a crystal called the Dawnseed, locked inside the private vault of merchant-prince Oren Vale. Tonight, while Vale hosts a masked feast, you must enter his estate, steal the crystal, and escape before the final bell.

Set the Scene

Mara Venn meets the party in an abandoned cooper's shed outside Bellwether. On a rough table she spreads a hand-drawn map of Vale's estate, a servant's cloak, and a stolen invitation to the masked feast. She explains that the estate has three known entrances: the front doors, the kitchens, and an old drainage culvert beneath the garden wall. Pella Reed can provide the party with the guard-change schedule, while Silas Quill can get them into the feast if they agree to keep any valuable documents they find rather than burn them.

  5. 05
The village spring became bitter three days after Vale's newest water contract was signed.
Stakes

If the party fails, Bellwether loses its only dependable water source and Oren Vale gains control over the village. If they recover the ledgers, they can also expose a broader network of corruption. If they leave the evidence behind, they may save Bellwether while allowing the true villain to remain protected.

Ticking Clock·The masked feast lasts three hours. When the final bell rings at midnight, Vale's guests depart, the estate locks down, and the Dawnseed is moved to a more secure location. The party has until then to complete the heist, though they can risk a desperate escape afterward.

Background Lore

The village of Bellwether sits beneath an abandoned watchtower whose old signal bell has not rung in a century. Beneath the tower, the merchant-prince Oren Vale built a hidden vault for storing tribute, blackmail ledgers, and relics taken from nearby communities. One item in the vault is the Dawnseed, a fist-sized amber crystal that can purify a poisoned spring. Bellwether's only reliable water source has recently begun to fail.

What the World Knows

Bellwether's spring has failed, threatening the village's survival. The cure, the Dawnseed, is locked in Oren Vale's private vault, and the party must steal it during a masked feast. The mission may also uncover why Vale possesses such a powerful relic and why he refuses to help the village.
