The Opening

Captain Sella Vane plants a battered shield beside the road and points toward a line of timber barricades. 'Five waves are coming before dawn. Hold the Line through three and Bellwether is safe; hold through all five and the wardens owe you a reward they have never given anyone.' Beyond the marsh, signal lights flicker between the reeds.

Set the Scene

The characters arrive at the Line shortly before dusk. Captain Vane gives them a quick tour of the barricades, explains the rear boundary and the signal bells, and asks them to choose positions. Pell identifies the eastern gap as the likeliest breach point. A distant horn sounds once, and the first shapes move in the reeds.

Rumours

d4 · table
  1. 01
The creatures have been testing the barricades in the same places each night, though nobody has seen them speak or signal.
  2. 02
A few days ago, the marsh water briefly shone blue beneath the reeds.
  3. 03
Pell says some of the attackers retreat when wounded instead of fighting to the death.
  4. 04
An old wardstone marks the safe edge of the marsh, but its location was lost when the road was rerouted.
Stakes

If the party fails to defeat three waves or lets too many attackers through, Bellwether's outer homes are threatened and the road becomes unsafe. If they hold all five waves, they earn the wardens' secret reward and preserve the Line intact.

Ticking Clock·Five assaults arrive before dawn. The party must defeat three waves to secure Bellwether, with the fourth and fifth waves serving as an optional test for the secret reward.

Background Lore

The frontier settlement of Bellwether stands behind the Line, a chain of timber barricades, overturned wagons, and old stonework guarding the only safe road through the Reedglass Marsh. The local wardens test new defenders with a five-wave stand. Their signal bells mark each wave's defeat, and the Line is considered held once three bells have sounded.

What the World Knows

Bellwether's defenders need help protecting the road through the Reedglass Marsh. Five enemy waves are expected before dawn. Defeat at least three and the settlement will be safe for now; defeating all five earns a special reward. The attackers' presence is unusual, and the wardens would welcome any clues about their movements.
