About
The shop is called The Whittled Wonder and occupies a narrow timber building that smells of cedar, beeswax, fresh shavings, and cinnamon tea. Its front windows display wooden dragons, pull-string birds, painted soldiers, puzzle boxes, spinning tops, nesting dolls, and small animals with exaggerated expressions. Every shelf is slightly different because the owner built the furniture from scrap lumber. A tiny puppet stage stands near the counter, and customers may leave a coin to watch a one-minute show performed by hand-operated wooden figures. The owner, Brindle Mossroot, is a cheerful middle-aged forest gnome with walnut-brown skin, silver-streaked hair, bright hazel eyes, and sawdust permanently caught in his beard. He wears a leather apron covered in pockets, each containing a carving tool, a pencil, or a wrapped snack. Brindle speaks to his toys as if they are apprentices and insists that every object should have a face, even when the face is only a pair of painted dots. He is friendly toward adventurers but suspicious of anyone who treats toys as disposable or haggles aggressively over work made for children. Brindle's shop has three areas. The front salesroom is colorful and cluttered, the central room contains a counter and puppet stage, and the rear workshop is filled with benches, clamps, drying racks, and hanging bundles of timber. A small loft above the workshop serves as his bedroom. The floorboards near the rear door are intentionally left loose and creak loudly when stepped on. Brindle's elderly mastiff, Peg, sleeps beneath the workbench but wakes at unfamiliar footsteps. The shop's custom items are modest in power and designed for utility, comfort, and roleplaying rather than combat. Brindle occasionally accepts unusual commissions, such as a toy likeness of a famous adventurer, a puzzle box containing a harmless secret, or a wooden charm carved from a branch recovered at an important location.
