About

Bitterroot and Bell was formed when two rival stalls, one selling bitter medicinal roots and the other glass vials, were forced into a single lease. Their old painted signs still face opposite ways above the same doorway. The owner distrusts anyone who shakes a bottle, labels every shelf in cramped script, and offers customers a spoon of honey after especially foul medicine.

Stash

6 items to steal

The stash · GM only

The best stash is split between a locked iron strongbox beneath the rear workbench and a concealed potion compartment behind the drying rack. The owner sleeps upstairs, and a bell-latched door plus a courtyard mastiff make a quiet theft difficult.

Security check: DC 17Dexterity (Thieves’ Tools)
If they fail: The glass bell above the rear workroom door rings when its latch is disturbed. The owner calls for help while the apprentice shutters the front entrance and releases the shop’s trained mastiff from the courtyard. The thief is confronted in the narrow herb passage, where fleeing through the front means passing the owner and a witness from the neighboring apothecary.
The whole haul: About 1,469 gp

Counter Reserve420 gp
Kept: Locked strongbox beneath the rear workbench
A heavy iron strongbox holds the day’s receipts and a reserve for buying rare ingredients. Most coins are mixed denominations, with a few stamped gold trade bars.
Value: 420 gp, 860 sp, and 1,900 cp
Owner’s Signet Ring45 gp
Kept: In a small dish beside the owner’s cot in the upstairs room
The owner’s worn silver signet, engraved with a simple split-leaf mark. It is sentimental, but a fence would pay for the metal and workmanship.
Reserve Potion Case600 gp
Kept: Concealed compartment behind the herb-drying rack in the rear workroom
A velvet-lined case containing two sealed potions of greater healing and one potion of resistance. The bottles are labeled and easy to identify as valuable magic.
Value: 600 gp total
The Blue Ledger100 gp
Kept: Under a false bottom in the writing desk upstairs
A ledger records customer names, debts, rare ingredient suppliers, and a few private notes about who requested unusually strong antidotes. It could be sold to a rival or used for blackmail, though the owner would pay to recover it.
Value: 100 gp to a rival; substantially more as leverage
Crystal Pestle and Silver Mortar180 gp
Kept: Wrapped in felt in the locked cabinet of the rear workroom
A palm-sized silver-inlaid mortar with a dark crystal pestle, inherited from the owner’s teacher and used for delicate preparations.
Travel Purse and Unsent Letter18 gp
Kept: Inside a boot beneath the upstairs cot
A small purse of emergency spending money and a folded letter from the owner’s estranged sibling. The letter is personal and has little resale value, but stealing it would be cruel and memorable.
Value: 18 gp, 7 sp; letter has no practical resale value
