The shop, Spear and Spade, got its name from a bitter merger: the old spear-maker's forge and the neighboring spade-maker's shed were joined after a property dispute. Their signs still hang side by side, though neither trade's old mark was ever removed. The front room smells of coal smoke, hot iron, and oiled leather. Hammer blows ring from a cramped forge at the back, where unfinished blades hang above a barrel of cooling water. Owner Katalin Varga is a broad-shouldered human smith with a clipped, practical manner and a singed braid tucked into her apron. She checks every edge with her thumb, refuses to sell a weapon she considers poorly balanced, and remembers customers who pay their debts.

The modest valuables are scattered between the counter, the curtained sleeping nook, and the forge's charcoal bin. The back room is cramped, hot, and easy to hear from the shop floor.

Security check: DC 13Dexterity (Sleight of Hand) to work the counter drawer quietly; thieves' tools can substitute to open the iron box.
If they fail: A bell wired to the rear door rings loudly if it is forced. If the party is noticed, owner Katalin Varga blocks the narrow exit with a heavy hammer and calls for the nearby night watch. The watch arrives after a few minutes, giving the party a chance to flee or explain themselves.
