About

Kudaai tests each finished blade with a careful tap and listens for its ring. He will not sell an item that sounds wrong, even if the flaw is only cosmetic. The forge smells of hot iron, olive oil, and charcoal; bronze shields and geometric patterns lend it the air of a Greek workshop. Kudaai is renowned for his work, but he is exacting about deposits and delivery dates. His reputation brings customers from beyond the neighborhood, and he keeps the shop orderly despite the heat and noise.

Stash

5 items to steal

The stash · GM only

The shop’s till and customer orders sit near the front counter, while personal effects and reserved metal are kept around Kudaai’s workbench and the rear storeroom. A concealed bell cord under the counter alerts the forge crew if disturbed.

Security check: DC 14Dexterity (Sleight of Hand) to lift items quietly; thieves’ tools for the locked ledger compartment
If they fail: A failed attempt triggers the floor bell beneath the counter. Kudaai comes from the rear workroom with his hammer, while his apprentice blocks the street-facing door and calls for the nearby watch. The shopkeeper first demands the stolen goods back; if the party threatens anyone or flees violently, he raises the alarm and remembers their faces.
The whole haul: About 44 gp

Counter Purse8 gp
Kept: Hook beneath the counter, beside the bell cord.
A leather purse containing the day’s small change and a few silver coins, kept separate from the larger business reserve.
Value: 8 gp, 14 sp, 23 cp
Olive-Leaf Clasp2 gp
Kept: Inside the drawer of Kudaai’s workbench.
A bronze clasp shaped like a small olive leaf, worn smooth at its edges. It appears to be a keepsake rather than merchandise.
Fine Iron Bar15 gp
Kept: On the high shelf above the quenching trough.
A narrow ingot of clean, high-quality iron reserved for a commissioned blade. It is heavy, useful, and conspicuously stamped with Kudaai’s mark.
Commission Ledger5 gp
Kept: Locked compartment beneath the counter’s writing board.
A waxed ledger listing customer names, deposits, delivery dates, and unpaid balances. It could reveal who has ordered arms or provide leverage in a local dispute.
Value: 5 gp to the right buyer; greater value as information
Chased Shield Boss12 gp
Kept: Wrapped in wool inside a labeled box in the rear storeroom.
A polished bronze fitting intended for a wealthy customer’s ceremonial shield. Its surface bears a finely chased Greek meander border.
