About

The front window displays a brass plaque reading 'The Third Chisel.' The name comes from an old incident outsiders always get wrong: a young apprentice reportedly dropped three chisels into a street drain while fleeing a fire, though the shopkeeper insists there was no fire and only one tool was lost. Customers who ask for an appraisal are invited to place their stones on a square of black felt. The shop buys only after a second inspection, and the owner marks every deposit with a tiny chalk triangle.

The shop's cash and everyday stock sit near the counter, while the higher-value gems are locked in a strongbox in the rear workroom. The owner's office and workbench are separated from the sales floor by a narrow passage and a bell-linked door.

Security check: DC 16Dexterity (Thieves' Tools)
If they fail: A hidden pressure chime rings in the back workroom. The owner bars the front door, calls the street watch, and keeps the party in sight while a neighboring shopkeeper fetches help. If the intruders escape, the watch receives their descriptions and a list of missing stock.
The whole haul: About 219 gp

Till Purse18 gp
Kept: Under the counter, in a shallow drawer beneath the wrapping paper.
A canvas coin purse holding the day's small change, mostly silver and copper with a few gold pieces.
Value: 18 gp, 7 sp, 12 cp
The Owner's Keepsake Ring25 gp
Kept: Inside the owner's locked writing desk in the rear office.
A narrow silver ring with a worn green stone, kept as a private memento rather than merchandise.
Parcel of Loose Gems90 gp
Kept: In a felt pouch inside the workroom's iron-bound strongbox.
Three small cut stones awaiting customer settings. Their combined value is modest, but easy to conceal.
Trade Ledger10 gp
Kept: On the writing desk, beneath a blotter and a stack of invoices.
A ledger noting purchases, appraisals, and customer deposits. It could expose debts or provide leverage, but its value depends on who is named in it.
Value: 10 gp to the right buyer; potentially more as leverage
Unclaimed Gold Brooch75 gp
Kept: In a locked display drawer behind the counter.
A small gold brooch shaped like a closed hand, awaiting its customer's collection. The sales tag records the purchaser's name.
